Yesterday began with freezing rain.  we had to cancel services at both
churchse as it was just too dangerous to go out.  Then it warmed up above
freezing and continued to rain.  A cold front followed this warm front
overnight and we have ice everywhere this morning.  Our garage door was
frozen to the driveway and the ice was about a half inch deep once I got it
open.  I've been salting slowly, working my way out as traction improves.  i
think it will take the whole 50 lb. Mike just got to make the drive
reasonably safe.   Mike says, "it'll melt eventually", but I'm not waiting
the week or two that'll be.   We're accustomed to the ice patch near the
street, this solid sheet of ice the length of the drive is unacceptable.
Toto, we're not in Florida any more!

ahhh yes, the days of rime and cold noses.  you poor thing.
((((((((((nann)))))))  i remember we used to use bags of potassium cloride
back east.  that is generally used in water softeners.  it's a form of salt,
but finer and it worked better than rock salt.  however, below a certain
temperature, nothing works well, except for heated driveways.

sounds like heat tape, a flat and flexible. fairly inexpensive electrical
cord thing you can buy at a hardware store (also good around exposed
plumming in attics or garages or in crawlspaces, to prevent frozen pipes)
might be an option for the base of your garage door at times like this.  i'd
put it on the inside/dry side of the garage along the garage doorway
threshold.

just be sure you have mike shovel off all the broken up, loose ice.  loose
ice is just as apt to cause a fall or sliding car and sometimes it is more
likely to, cuz one takes it for granted.

feeling for you.

heh, nowhere to plug in the heat tape here.  They've never modernized the
electricity in the garage and breezeway in the rectory and the single,
non-grounded outlet is already stressed!  Fixing tht is issue is on my list
of recommended future repairs.

As for the ice, Monday, afternoon I got out there and started shoveling up
the sheets of ice once the salt had finally loosened them well.  Did the more
heavily salted, lighter iced 2/3 of the drive (which is longer than the usual
in town drive).  That stretch ranged from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches thick.  I
was giving up on the remainder when Mike decided to take over.  he did the
lighter salted, more heavily iced section, including the part sometimes known
as "Lake Bell" because of all the water that collects there.  Parts of that
were 3 inches thick. He was using the garden spade to break up the ice.  We
both really felt it last night!

This morning i walked to the local pharmacy to pick up my psoriasis lotion.
I really appreciated our cleared drive.  Even the salted & sanded roads were
slick, but you can actually walk rather than shuffling on our drive!  I
actually found one thing i appreciate about folks riding snowmobiles in town
- they chew up the ice on the sidewalks so you have a bit more traction.

Nothing like ice to make you appreciate snow - as I've been telling everyone
today!

LOL - in fact, I tried to buy Mike some Yaktrax at Dunham's today.  they'd
had such a run on them the past 2 days though they only had 3 left, all too
small for him.

Any possibility you can get those snowmobiles to do a back and forth on your
driveway?  I remember when we lived in the ice/snow area of the country, the
biggest b..........was to just finish shoveling off the driveway and have
the snowplows come along and throw a big pile across the opening of the
driveway!  Screech!
