Carole, if you plan to take I-5, you are just about guaranteed to see snow
in southern Oregon, as there are several passes to go through.

If you take Hwy 101, along the coast, you may have better luck snow-wise,
but it's slower, and more winding, and there are sometimes troubles with
landslides, etc, particularly if it's been raining a lot.

Were it me, I'd fly.:)

My in-laws used to drive down from Portland all the time.  At Thanksgiving
you have a chance of snow in the mountains between Oregon and California.
You can also run into fog in California that time of year.  So I'd fly if I
absolutely, positively had to be in a particular place at a particular time
in late November.  Usually bad weather doesn't last that long that early in
the winter if your schedule is more flexible.

I am considering driving down from Bellingham to Santa Cruz for
Thanksgiving weekend this year to attend the retreat I mentioned
earlier. Is that a good idea weatherwise, or is there a lot of snow and
ice around that time of year. I'd rather fly if there is a possibility I
wouldn't be able to drive it. But if I can drive it, then I'd like to do
that as I love to drive and I've never been through Oregon and CA, so
I'd get to see and do things along the way.

heyyyy, carole.  i used to fly down from sea tac into san jose airport
(check for special fares).  i'd take a cab for the short ride from the san
jose airport to rent-a-wreck (or was that rent-a-dent?) on san fernando
blvd. to rent a reliable older used car, cuz i'm kinda cheap.<g>  from
there, you get right on highway 17 (it's called something else, now, but old
timers still call it that and everybody knows 17) and head straight down to
santa cruz.  it shouldn't be bad through the santa cruz mountains this time
of the year.  none of my friends have mentioned snowfall in that area,
recently.  but you are apt to run into snow if you drive down from here.
