This morning about 3:00 a.m. I heard this very loud noise that literally
sounded like a bomb had been set off outside on my balcony. Few
minutes later, it happened again. I finally got up to investigate. The
actual temp outside at that point was -5° with the windchill somewhere
in the -20's.
Turns out the very loud kabooms that I heard outside were several of my
terra cotta planters that I use during the summer.... they literally had
exploded.
I usually just stack them up and set them in the corner for the winter,
but I guess with these extreme cold temps it was just a little too much
for them!
Did you all know that terra cotta planters can explode like that???
I had no idea, and it sure scared the heck out of me when they were
exploding.

I heard somewhere that the clay absorbs water and when the water freezes
they will crack. But I haven't ever had one explode- man, that *would*
scare you! Good luck surviving the vicious cold. We have a thunder sleet
storm going on here in southern MO. It's wicked out there. My small town
is shutting down. The radio said the businesses are sending their employees
home.

Good grief! Shards of terra cotta can be dangerous! Sure hope they all
stayed outside.
We're expecting snow tonight, sleet and snow and freezing rain tomorrow,
then snow again. Gotta love it!

Yeah, DeeTee, I'm so glad I wasn't out there when those things decided
to explode. I usually spend a fair amount of time out on my balcony at
night, but because the temps were sooooo frigid last night, I didn't go
out on the balcony at all. Thank goodness! I would have really freaked
it those things started exploding while I was out there!!!
Stay warm and stay healthy!!!

Thanks, Jo. We have a friend who just moved to Florida and she loves to call
us and give us their weather report. LOL

oh, shut up. we got back from our trip to NY state, deeply tired from a long
trip home, to a fair amount of snow in our drive and a notice from the USPS
complaining about us not clearing access to our mailbox while we were gone.
(you'd think the mail piling up in the mailbox would have provided a clue
that we were out of toown!) shoveled the mailbox and half the drive before
going to do food pantry, shoveld teh rest afterwards. the combo of illness
fatigue and normal people type fatigue reached epic levels last night! lol
i doubt i'll be very productive today.

this. Yeah look whose talking. LOL

Nope. But once, on a similarly cold night, the outside driver's side
mirror on my car exploded.
