i'm a little upset. i received my remicade today and stupidly asked for my bloodwork results AFTER getting the infusion. i think these results indicate a weakened immune system (but what do i know?) my doc obviously saw no problem in giving me the remicade, but i wonder if it was a good idea. can anyone tell me what these results mean? (i'm skipping the RBC results because they are always off due to thallasemia minor.) WBC 3.6 (4.0-10.5) granulocyte % 32 (43-77) absolute gran 1.1 (1.7-7.7) lymph % 53 (12-46) Baso % 2 (0-1) all else normal thanks for any input, diane Hi Diane, Your WBC is a little low, which might be something you want to just run by your doctor. J.K.M.A. If I had to have an opinion on this...and of course, I do, I would say none of them are way out of whack. I don't know too many of us who have perfect blood tests, Diane. Because of the things we fight daily, our scores are always just a little off, kinda what yours are. It looks to me as though there might be a little anemia going on, the RBC count would cinch that but the rest doesn't look too bad. Ask your doctor. DeeTee > i'm a little upset. i received my remicade today and stupidly asked > for my bloodwork results AFTER getting the infusion. i think these [quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > > diane thanks for the input. i keep track of my bloodwork and this was the first time i saw the "types of cells" being off. as for anemia dee tee, i always am anemic (hemoglobin runs 9-10.2, hematocrit around 32) because of thallasemia minor, an inherited mediterranean (sp) anemia (thanks, dad), which is unrelated to the "i" word. i'm used to that and it can't be fixed. my doc holds back on remicade when the WBC reaches 3.5, so i guess she figured 3.6 was ok. i would have fought it had I known, because i get the max dose of remicade every 6 weeks and it wouldn't have been a big deal to put it off another couple of weeks. diane Diane, Hydration (or dehydration) as well as anemia and such can effect blood counts, so that could be playing into it also. Can't hurt, though, to just ring the doc and ask---if nothing else, just to give you some peace of mind! Hope all else is well with you and John! . . . . Donna . . . . 1.) But I wouldn't get too concerned without a retest. Blood test can be inaccurate. Lots of things including human error can throw one set of tests off. Trends are the big thing. As well as a retest when thing are unusually off. Jo I'd be curious to hear what your doc says, but my $.02 interpretation is that you probably have a lot of inflammation. As if that is any surprise. WBC = white blood cells = your defense against invaders. So, yes, a low count might suggest a weakened immune system. But maybe you are taking anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc) or immune suppressants (MTX etc), any of which will also suppress WBC. If not, then anemias of various shades including your TM could be at play, if not just "anemia of chronic disease." Beyond the "easy" answers are some serious things. I don't think there is a major worry about any of those unless this is a NEW symptom, and it is getting worse FAST. The other parts of the tests are just various components of the white blood cells. If you were simply immune weakened, then ALL of them would probably be middle of their range. The NUMBer, the differential, reflects the fraction of the whole. So, you can see that lymphocytes and basophils outnumber the rest. Lymphocytes by themselves might suggest a viral infection, among other things. Basophils by themselves might suggest a parasitic attack, among other things. But both together being elevated, well, that correlates very well with inflammation. Since all lymphocytes come from the bone marrow, the fact that they are running strong is a very good sign against some of the nastiest things a low WBC might have suggested. > i'm a little upset. i received my remicade today and stupidly asked > for my bloodwork results AFTER getting the infusion. i think these [quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > > diane  SignaturedeT notsuH bass-ackwards ude.hcimu@pcird "It's hard to be nostalgic when you can't remember anything." thanks for that detailed response, ted. the weird thing was that i felt just fine when i had the bloodwork done (and still feel fine). . . aside, of course, from inflammation, which is a given. but even that is/was no worse than usual, yet the bloodwork was definitely different from my norm. i'll have it taken again in a couple of months, so i'm going to assume this time was just a fluke. i HAD started atenolol a few days before the test, but assume that couldn't have anything to do with it. again, thanks. diane
