In California, you can use any name you want without going
to court for a name change, as long it is not to defraud.
I use a different name on my voter registration. Then if
I receive a car dealer's ad addressed to that name, I know
it was illegally obtained from the Registaar of Voters.
I receive magazines in different names, or variation of
the true name. Then if I'm bombarded with junk mail from
other companies, I know who sold my name and address.
I learned many, many years ago that the San Diego Zoo
purchased a mailing list from Playboy subscribers.
... The bags of miniature candy bars are labeled `Fun Size'.
... Does this mean that the regular size bars are no fun?

I do hope California has slowed down on selling mailing lists. The stuff my
younger daughter started getting right after she got her drivers license was
pretty bad.
My junk mail from when I was working is just now starting to taper off. I
always got at least three sets of everything related to taxes and
accounting. One to my office street address, one to the PO Box I had to
have since the post office was liable to deliver anything sent to the street
address to almost anyone, and one set to my home address. Then multiply by
various spellings and misspellings of my name.

One of the things I love about my apartment complex is that we have a
HUGE garbage can right next to the mailboxes :) We keep telling them
that we need a super shredder :-))
