kate, i'm really not in a race with you, but i've had another accident also.
i was in my bedroom getting ready to go to high tea for a friend, and i
fell.  don't ask me how or why cause i can't tell you!  I went on to the tea
but my wrist kept hurting and looked awful.  so i came back by dr. hartzog's
office and they worked me in. had to wait 1 1/2 hours but at least i was in
an exam room and on the list to be seen.  i had a crack in a bone above my
left wrist, the one with the basal joint replacement.  so now i'm in a cast
from my fingers to above my elbow.  i go back in two weeks for xray to see
if i can then go into a short cast.  sure hope so cause i sure can't fasten
a bra for myself, either front or back.

i had gone past the doctor's office coming home and turned around to go
back, just in case there was damage that needed to be taken care of.  i had
to be ready to go to the alabama state junior miss competition tonight and
tomorrow afternoon and night.  dr.
gave me plenty of lortabs 7.5 mg so i should make it okay.  there are 51
county winners here, and they have all been living with host families since
last friday.  no phone calls or emails, but they have been so busy there was
no time anyway.  i'm just really hoping annie will be in the top eight.  we
won't be able to see or talk to her until after the finals tomorrow night.

carol and wayne are here but she has been in bed a lot of the time.  her fm
is really bad, plus some other problems.  annie's other aunt and a cousin
will also be here.  at least i have carol to fasten my bra for tonight and
tomorrow.

typing with one hand is for the birds, not for me.  will let you know how i
get along.

Oh Gwen I'm really sorry to hear that you are hurt again.  Hoping your wrist
heals quickly and the pain abates soon.

My family are still laughing about my incident with the coleslaw and the
christmas tree, so I hope you get more tlc and sympathy than I got!

Hi M - I'm afraid I have become a bit of a lurker over the past year or so,
but I do try and keep up with what is happening.  Real life just keeps on

It was Chrismas Eve evening and I was setting the table for a meal.  My mum
had come to stay and we were having a buffet style meal.  I was walking out
of the kitchen with a large bowl of coleslaw I'd made, tripped and started
falling (you know the type of fall - you stagger about 3 yards, knowing that
you are going down) lurched into the next room, threw the bowl of coleslaw
and fell, landing hard on the knee replacement that is only 3 months old.
When I'd finished yelling and turned onto my back, I looked up at the
christmas tree which was right next to me and dangling from it was loads of
coleslaw!

Had we still had the dog, she would have taken care of that, but after John
had taken care of me he then had to clean the carpet and pick off all the
bits from the tree.

The reaction of my two teenage boys - "does that mean we don't have
coleslaw?"

LOL!

Any damage to the knee Jayne?  If not, that is an hysterically funny
sight to contemplate.  If you were injured, it becomes less humorous.

No, no lasting damage, although in the first while after I fell the pain was
horrible and I lay still thinking I'd done some awful damage.  I then rolled
onto my back (which is when I spotted the coleslaw trimmings on the tree)
and straightened my knee and it was okay.  I was a bit bruised and shocked,
but otherwise fine, thank goodness.

I had a similar fall after my first knee replacement, although not quite so
soon after.  I think it was a year, and that time I tripped over one of the
boys' shoes, which I really blew my top over.  No damage then either.  I
think I'm just lucky - either that or someone up there is watching over me
and knows it is unlikely that any of the hulking men in my house would run
around after me!

Jayne

Absolutely Kelly - hubby takes size 10, eldest (19) is in size 11/12, and my

ahhh, my husband wears size 12.  even worse, he wears an 8-1/8 size hat!
(loves to wear hats and looks good in them, but can buy the in only a few
places.) i've tried on occasion to wear his shoes for a quick run outside or
to "carry" a hat on my head, but it just doesn't work!

I'm getting clumsier as I get older I think.  Only last night I walked
straight into a half open door edge on.  I was looking that way, but just
went straight into it.  Luckily (?) my face and erm... bosom took the brunt!
LOL!

Mind you I was a clumsy child too, so perhaps that explains some of it!

jayne, i was also clumsy as a child, and unfortunately also as an adult, and
now as a senior citizen!  i also have problems with depth perception and
that i think is part of the falling problem.

Hi Gwen,,,,  There are many people that live with that.   My youngest son
has no depth perception.    Reason.....  We had to have his eyes corrected
because both eyes needed the correction to correct cross eyes when he was
about 2 and a half.    We did not know that this has to be done much earlier
before the brain sets its self on vision.   He ended up with normal looking
eyes but one eye controls close vision and one eye controls objects that are
far away.  In other words he drives a car with one eye,,,,, no depth vision.

I lived with that my entire life.  I could read with my left eye but had
20/400 vision in it otherwise.  Right eye was for distance.  No depth
perception whatsoever.

When I had cataracts removed they corrected the distance vision in my left
eye.  I can't say my depth perception is great but otherwise its nice to
have the correction.

Driving is worst at night.  Its really hard to judge distance on lights.

Jo
ANN M - 23 Jan 2008 19:33 GMT
Harv,
I have eyes exactly like your son does.  One is for reading and the
other is for driving.  I don't have to close one eye to do either
because my brain just turns one off when not needed.  This is why before
I had cataract surgery that I could not wear bifocal lenses (too much up
and down and back and forth for this old brain to handle).
My eyes were not crossed as a child, but wandered to the sides and I
wore a patch for a bit and then had exercises on a machine to do. None
of it helped at all.  Depth perception is a problem and I walk into
doors all the time (g)

So does his.  We went to a 3D movie a couple of weeks ago and it was a waste
of money for the 3D part for him but he enjoyed the movie.

Door handles keep grabbing me!  We used to have doorknobs, but I found them
awkward, so had them all changed to handles.  Now, when leaving a room I
frequently get dragged back by a cardigan pocket or sleeve!  Roll on
summer - few clothes!

Gwen,
Does your lack of depth perception affect you when going down stairs or
getting on a down escalator?  I've always had trouble with both of
these.  Also, when I pull in a parking space facing a building I always
end up a foot or so away.  I can't tell how close I am to the building.

Ah yes.  We have a tennis ball hanging from the garage ceiling.  My car is
in the right spot when the ball touches the windshield.  I just can't judge
it by eye alone.

Charlie has never understood, but after carping about it for years he
finally put the ball up like I asked him too.  Still once in a while I
overshoot and hit the plastic garbage can that is sitting there.  I did
yesterday.  But at least then I could slowly back up till the ball was just
touching.

ann, i never look down on stairs or escalator after i get my hand on a rail.
i'm the same as you in parking, even just trying to judge the distance to a
car parked in the lane in front of me.  i never thought of it being because
of depth perception.  thanks for the tip.

Heck, it happens to me in clothes.  I also have a talent for cutting doorways
too closely which contributes to hooking myself on handles and banging into
doorknobs.  I think I get too easily distracted when walking.  fortunately, I
pay more attention when driving!  I also watch what I'm doing more when
hiking.  It's just at home where I think I know what I'm doing that I have
trouble!  LOL

Nann, that is what Jim says I do is cut the corners too quickly. I kiss the

right on the hall wall where you make a turn from the dining room so I smack

Luckily it didn't hurt for long - only hurt bad for about 30 seconds, then
it was the usual shock.  I lay on my back feeling all cold and hot and
