sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 18 Jan 2008 21:12 GMT kate, i'm really not in a race with you, but i've had another accident also. i was in my bedroom getting ready to go to high tea for a friend, and i fell. don't ask me how or why cause i can't tell you! I went on to the tea but my wrist kept hurting and looked awful. so i came back by dr. hartzog's office and they worked me in. had to wait 1 1/2 hours but at least i was in an exam room and on the list to be seen. i had a crack in a bone above my left wrist, the one with the basal joint replacement. so now i'm in a cast from my fingers to above my elbow. i go back in two weeks for xray to see if i can then go into a short cast. sure hope so cause i sure can't fasten a bra for myself, either front or back.
i had gone past the doctor's office coming home and turned around to go back, just in case there was damage that needed to be taken care of. i had to be ready to go to the alabama state junior miss competition tonight and tomorrow afternoon and night. dr. gave me plenty of lortabs 7.5 mg so i should make it okay. there are 51 county winners here, and they have all been living with host families since last friday. no phone calls or emails, but they have been so busy there was no time anyway. i'm just really hoping annie will be in the top eight. we won't be able to see or talk to her until after the finals tomorrow night.
carol and wayne are here but she has been in bed a lot of the time. her fm is really bad, plus some other problems. annie's other aunt and a cousin will also be here. at least i have carol to fasten my bra for tonight and tomorrow.
typing with one hand is for the birds, not for me. will let you know how i get along.

It was Chrismas Eve evening and I was setting the table for a meal. My mum had come to stay and we were having a buffet style meal. I was walking out of the kitchen with a large bowl of coleslaw I'd made, tripped and started falling (you know the type of fall - you stagger about 3 yards, knowing that you are going down) lurched into the next room, threw the bowl of coleslaw and fell, landing hard on the knee replacement that is only 3 months old. When I'd finished yelling and turned onto my back, I looked up at the christmas tree which was right next to me and dangling from it was loads of coleslaw!
Had we still had the dog, she would have taken care of that, but after John had taken care of me he then had to clean the carpet and pick off all the bits from the tree.
The reaction of my two teenage boys - "does that mean we don't have coleslaw?"
LOL!

I then rolled onto my back (which is when I spotted the coleslaw trimmings on the tree) and straightened my knee and it was okay. I was a bit bruised and shocked, but otherwise fine, thank goodness.
I had a similar fall after my first knee replacement, although not quite so soon after. I think it was a year, and that time I tripped over one of the boys' shoes, which I really blew my top over. No damage then either. I think I'm just lucky - either that or someone up there is watching over me and knows it is unlikely that any of the hulking men in my house would run around after me!

Kelly - 20 Jan 2008 21:05 GMT Glad it turned out well Jayne - it allowed me to laugh at the images - you tell a great story. I would blow a top at the boy's shoes too - 3 men in the family with shoes twice my size are ridiculous.

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 23 Jan 2008 01:26 GMT jayne, i was also clumsy as a child, and unfortunately also as an adult, and now as a senior citizen! i also have problems with depth perception and that i think is part of the falling problem. gwen

My youngest son has no depth perception. Reason..... We had to have his eyes corrected because both eyes needed the correction to correct cross eyes when he was about 2 and a half. We did not know that this has to be done much earlier before the brain sets its self on vision. He ended up with normal looking eyes but one eye controls close vision and one eye controls objects that are far away. In other words he drives a car with one eye,,,,, no depth vision. Harv

I could read with my left eye but had 20/400 vision in it otherwise. Right eye was for distance. No depth perception whatsoever.
When I had cataracts removed they corrected the distance vision in my left eye. I can't say my depth perception is great but otherwise its nice to have the correction.
Driving is worst at night. Its really hard to judge distance on lights.

ANN M - 23 Jan 2008 19:33 GMT Harv, I have eyes exactly like your son does. One is for reading and the other is for driving. I don't have to close one eye to do either because my brain just turns one off when not needed. This is why before I had cataract surgery that I could not wear bifocal lenses (too much up and down and back and forth for this old brain to handle). My eyes were not crossed as a child, but wandered to the sides and I wore a patch for a bit and then had exercises on a machine to do. None of it helped at all. Depth perception is a problem and I walk into doors all the time (g) Ann.

Now, when leaving a room I frequently get dragged back by a cardigan pocket or sleeve! Roll on summer - few clothes!

ANN M - 23 Jan 2008 19:38 GMT Gwen, Does your lack of depth perception affect you when going down stairs or getting on a down escalator? I've always had trouble with both of these. Also, when I pull in a parking space facing a building I always end up a foot or so away. I can't tell how close I am to the building. Ann

We have a tennis ball hanging from the garage ceiling. My car is in the right spot when the ball touches the windshield. I just can't judge it by eye alone.
Charlie has never understood, but after carping about it for years he finally put the ball up like I asked him too. Still once in a while I overshoot and hit the plastic garbage can that is sitting there. I did yesterday. But at least then I could slowly back up till the ball was just touching.

Heck, it happens to me in clothes. I also have a talent for cutting doorways too closely which contributes to hooking myself on handles and banging into doorknobs.
