Nann Bell - 18 Jan 2008 03:39 GMT Or why I am a Mac person....................
I recently upgraded us to a newer, used iMac so we could use OS X. But with Mike needing to send job application materials via email, we also needed a new version of MacLink to translate documents into Word. I decided it would just be easier to buy MS Office for our mostly-for-games PC. Now that folks are having trouble opening stuff, i learn MS changed their file format for Office 2007!! Of course, i had to research this myself and now find myself sending folks links to he download center for the update. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........................
If the folks in Frankfurt have trouble getting the update, i'll have to go elsewhere tomorrow to type in his resume and send it as an earlier Word document. So, tell me, why do we love the information age?

So, tell me, why do we love the information age? Within Word2007, you should be able to "Save As" and choose a different format. Your choices include Word2003-compatible files (will have a .doc extension) and .rtf. The choices may be worded differently, so you might have to experiment to see what file names you end up with. .doc will be readable by earlier Word versions, for Windows or Mac; .rtf will be readable by virtually any word processor, for either platform. You absolutely don't have to retype the document to send it in an earlier format!

Nann Bell - 18 Jan 2008 07:05 GMT Oh, bless you, bless you, bless you!!!! (o why didn't MS mention this on their website instead of talking about getting others to download updates?....) But bless you - I've already done this with his resume and sent it off to Frankfurt in the older format. Many thanks!

Diane - 18 Jan 2008 15:50 GMT nann, i just replaced both my desktop and laptop with new vista computers and if i had it to do over again, i would switch to mac. never thought i'd say that. never. and perhaps the new mac leopard system would be just as awful, but vista's driving me nuts.

Microsoft has my computer soooo messed up.
I shudder to think what I'd be dealing with if I needed it for anything more involved than email newsgroups and games. Oh and the occasional picture or two.

Oh and the occasional picture or >two. Tell me about it!!! I went to XP and not terribly happy with it. I will never go to Vista from all I have heard, none of it good. Never used a Mac but they are beginning to sound better.

I've used PCs extensively in various offices in the past, but have always had a Mac as our primary home computer. I truly do find the Mac OS works much more smoothly and intuitively than Windows. Now that Apple's gone to a Linux based OS there will be a lot more cross-platform, non-proprietary software out there - already is in fact. Everythiing I've heard about Vista just makes me more determined to stick with Macs. I even hear their voice recognition software is getting much better, though with my speech defects that may never be a good option for me.

And once you go Mac, you'll NEVER go back :)))))

Carole - 18 Jan 2008 05:30 GMT Make your life easier...send resumes in plain text. Many companies use scanners and they don't pick up formatting. When you follow up with the hard copy (which you MUST do if you email a resume), then you can send them fancy one :))

Search comittees are comprised of lay people who may well be circulating info via email for ease, so things need to stay clean during forwarding. And we generally don't send a hard copy if the electronic one works, because that is not the important element in the process. You build a profile of strengths and weaknesses with the Church Deployment Office and that carries more weight than the resume. Ultimately, though, if there is nothing opposed to what they have determined they need at this time in these documents, their bishop's deployment officer discusses you with your bishop's deployment officer. It's an interesting system - and gives one real motivation to always be diplomatic with one's bishop! (luckily, that's been eaasy for us thus far as we've flat out liked our 2 bishops.) Then the process continues as best suits the parish's situation - phone interviews, different on-site visits, etc.
And thanks again Alice - your info did the trick and Frankfurt was able to open the resent resume!

So, tell me, why do we love the information age? 1. You can set the file formats to save as excel/word/powerpoint 2003
2. I use openoffice.org on linux and windows and it's avilable for free for Mac OS10.3 and beyond. It also needs some easy configuration to tell it to save as office 2003/2000 files rather than it's own open format. I could open an instant messenger chat and walk you through the process (I have written instructions for windows, but not for Mac, in case there are some minor differences).

I'll haave to check it out further when my brain is working a bit better. I'm almost recovered fom earlier in the week, but I'm not quite up to having to think things through again yet. The trip we were leaving on tomorrow aftenoon had to be postponed, but the good news is that I got to rest a lot today. I feel those brain cells beginning to communicate again! It probably helps that I didn't forget my afternoon pain meds as I did yesterday! LOL --- Nann remove the Gator cheer to email me Simply the thing I am shall make me live --- William Shakespeare
