nodule vs calcification?

Have developed this small, very firm, thing on my right hand at the base
of my ring finger located right where the  joint is (where the finger
meets the hand).   Very strange, as it seems this thing just kind of
almost popped up overnight.   Saw my RD the other day and he said it was
either a small nodule that had developed or perhaps a calcification on a
tendon.

I didn't even know you could get a calcification on a tendon!

Anyone else with this type of thing?  Very weird, as it sticks out on
the top of my hand like a little pointed pyramid.

i have a bunch of these, donna, whatever they are. as a matter of
fact, i had one removed in my 20's (DECADES ago), long before being
diagnosed with RA. at the time, the doc said it was a ganglion cyst,
but since i have many more of them now, i doubt it. my rheumy says
they're either a nodule or "something" on the tendon. they don't
bother me much, although the one in my 20's did because it hurt when i
used the weight machines at the gym. ha! no problem with THAT
anymore.

i've been out of town and out of touch. hope everyone is ok.

Hi Diane,

Welcome back into town!   We missed you!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience.   My RD doesn't think this is a
ganglion cyst but does think it is either a nodule or a calcification on
a tendon.  Sounds like his thinking is similar to what your RD is
thinking!   Appreciate your input!!!

Hugs,

Chondrocalcinosis

Arthritis Rheum. 1977 Mar;20(2):717-22.Links
Tendon calcifications in chondrocalcinosis. A clinical, radiologic,
histologic, and crystallographic study.Gerster JC, Baud CA, Lagier R,
Boussina I, Fallet GH.
Fine linear extraarticular calcium deposits were found in X-rays of 7
of 52 patients with articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC). Seven Achilles
tendons, seven quadriceps tendons, and one plantar fascia were
affected. In a control group of comparable age and sex, without ACC
but with generalized osteoarthritis, no calcifications were found in
the tendons. On a biopsy specimen of Achilles tendon with such calcium
deposits, X-ray diffraction showed that they had the characteristics
of calcium pyrophosphate dilhydrate. Isolated small foci of crystals
were observed on some segments of tendon bundles. The presence of fine
linear calcifications on X-rays of the Achilles or quadriceps tendons
may be a useful aid in the radiologic diagnosis of so-called articular
chondrocalcinosis.

Haemochromatosis arthropathy includes degenerative osteoarthritis and
chondrocalcinosis Pseudogout is one of the clinical manifestations of
calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (CPPD). This
disorder is characterized by the accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate
dihydrate crystals in the hyaline articular cartilage or
fibrocartilage. It is therefore a form of crystal arthritis, and - as
its name indicates - often misdiagnosed as gout. Other manifestations
of CPPD include chondrocalcinosis and pyrophosphate arthropathy....

Sorry Rusty Brains, but I DO NOT have iron overload and your articles
are less than useless to me.   Why don't you go troll some where else
until you've recovered from your own iron overloaded brain!!!

Well, there is this little tab to click on that consigns such folks to the
oblivion known as "blocked sender" of "bozo file" as it used to be known.  A
few moments of consigning such folks to the bozo bin and they are gone.  We
had a siege of such types in another group but with carful use of the bozo
bin they go away.

Actually if you get your news groups through Google I believe that they have
some filtering system although I hav en't had to use it.

Donna, I have one of those on my ring finger on right hand also..and
sometimes it is very painful, but only if it is pressed on...The Rheumy said
it was a ganglion cyst...I guess it could be or not...
I don't have RA, so I assume it is...
