Can't remember if I told you folks this story or not....

Well - I guess I should tell everyone what happened at the hospital. I had
my surgery on January 4th. Then the nice people took me up to the third
floor. There the new nurses transferred me to a bed. It hurt, but I expected
it. Then they found out the bed didn't work. So they brought up another bed,
rolled the one I was now on out into the hallway so they could transfer me
again. Then they got ugly. First they transferred me (that's where they grab
hold of the sheet and slide you quickly from one surface to the other). That
hurt again and if it had ended there, all would be well. But no, they had
used all the linens that were on the hospital bed to transfer me and now I
had two sets of linens under me and they wanted one gone. They brutally
rolled me (remember I was about an hour out of surgery) onto my side, pushed
all the top linens under me and then PULLED me back over the linens onto my
other side, removed the excess linens and dumped me back on my back. I'm
screaming, Bob's steaming, and the other people visiting patients are
horrified. The nurses then calmly put me back in the room and go away. Today
(Friday) I called the hospital to lodge an official complaint (I was in no
shape to do so until now). The complaint person took all the information,
said she'd forward it to the appropriate people and that they would then
have 3 business days to contact me and address the complaint.

I'm not sure what they can do about it now, but I wanted it in writing (in
case they tore something that doesn't heal properly), and I wanted the
individuals concerned chastised. I mean for crying out loud!! Anyway, that's
what happened to me and one of the reasons I am in so much pain. The lady
who took my call said if I at anytime felt I was having unusual pain I was
to contact my doctor immediately.  However, I've never had hernia surgery
before so how would I know if it's unusual? The surgeon warned me before
hand that hernia repair was a very painful recovery.

As of today (Monday about 3:15 AM), I still hurt but no where near what it
was last week. I do, however, think I have a UTI and plan to call my PCP
when her office opens. I took one of those over-the-counter UTI tests and it
turned positive. Maybe some antibiotics would make me all better. It can't
hurt, that's for sure. This has been a rough couple of years for me. As my
daughter says, "Le Sigh."

OMG DeeTee!!!   That story is horrendous!  So glad you filed an official
complaint!!!    Makes me hurt just to read it.   Uggggh, sometimes these
people at the hospital just don't have a clue!

Uggggh, hope your doc can get that UTI cleared and quickly and that you
can heal up without further incident!

Yikes, you deserve a medal or something or maybe a nice sunny vacation
on a warm sunny beach somewhere, sipping margaritias after all you've
been through!!!

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I can't believe they treated you that way!  You done right
in lodging that complaint.  What's wrong with a few extra linens on the bed?
Sometimes beds are made that way *on purpose* in a hospital and it's all
gotta be washed now anyway.  And they really shouldn't be transferring you in
the hallway - that violates all kinds of privacy issues.  I've always seen
them manage somehow to get the beds side by side in the room,

and they should never have caused you all that pain, especially post-op, even
if they didn't mess up the surgery itself.  ((((((((((((DeeTee)))))))))))

That's terrible!!  I'm so glad you filed a complaint. Let us know what
happens with it. You would think medical personnel would know
better.....geez.

Hope you are feeling better now :)

Gentle Hugs,
Carole

Every time I hear a story like this I shudder. It shouldn't
happen.

The lesson here is to remember that these guys aren't holy. No reason
for Bob (husband?) not to have intervened. When I was witness to
something similar happening to someone I knew in the hospital, I
forcibly spoke up. The entire attitude and behavior changed instantly.

Sometimes people need to be wakened up to their bad behaviors.

DeeTee,
hugs and sympathy.  What a horror story.  I am just stunned that
happened.  Please update on what the consequences are for people
involved.

It's important that you file a complaint with the hospital.  There is no
excuse for treating you this badly, when you were just post-op
especially.  I am afraid of hospitals since the last time when I was
dragged out of bed at 2 in the morning and rushed down for a stress
test.  When I told them I had arthritis and could not walk the
treadmill, one nice man looked at my wristband and checked the computer
only to find they had the wrong patient.  Seems another with my last
name was wanted.  I told them it was a good thing it wasn't surgery.
A couple of years before that a nurse tried to give me the wrong meds in
the middle of the night.  When I argued with her, she checked my
wsristband and said "oops" and ran out of the room. I really worry about
being hospitalized and unable to speak for myself.

Yes, Bob is the husband. He doesn't speak up. That's not his way. If my
daughter, Linda, or my son, Rob, had been there, it would have been a
different case. Both of them get their aggressiveness from me. I,
unfortunately, was unable at the time to do anything more than yell out in
pain....something I rarely ever do.

Its too bad your daughter, or one of mine for that matter wasn't there.  It
would have hit the fan.  Charlie is like Bob that way.  He would have been
terribly upset, but not able to do anything, and even more upset that he was
unable to do anything.  He has other attributes so I guess I'm keeping him.

Oh DeeTee, that is awful. I am glad you filed a complaint. They should not
have done that to you. I am so  sorry to hear this.

I hope if you have a UTI it heals quickly. You don't need that on top of all
the other stuff.

Prayers and good thoughts coming your way.
