sSShingles,,,,  I must of done something really bad to have this and it is
very very painful day and night all the time..   How manyother poor soles
have had this?    It has stopped by Lung doctor appointment,,, a stress test
and
Christmas,,, bahh h umbug.   Yes,, Christmas.  I can not stand the idea of a
grandchild of mine having this much less getting it from me.   They will
have to put the toys together and that is more than have of the fun.  A
little oil here a dab of grease there and works just right.  Now what they
do with them after the leave here is someone elses problem.   I am litterly
broken hearted.  It is my favorite time of the year..... I know, I know, it
is the most stressful time of the year people  are pushed to go deeper and
deeper in debtll.  Let me make a true statement,, Jesus Christ is not the
cause of any of this as we struggle to keep balance in our lives..... This
is mans doing.  How do we get from a babe in asleep in the hay to what we
have today? Honestly,,, the devel never sleeps  and  anyone that can not see
that should open their eyes.
We have come together in my house 46 out of 49 and that hurts as much as
the shingles but not quite.   I have never had this kind of pain.   Yes, I
am taking the right kind of serscription and rubon's.  Just think what it
must been before modern medicine.  Shudder,, no I don't want to think about
it,, maybe next.   Oh, yes,,, Merry Christmas and if you understand the true
meaning of that it has been a good day.

Harv, I'm so sorry you are going through this.  My aunt and my daughter have
had bouts in the last couple of years.  My aunt's was shear torture.

To what degree is it contageous?

Anyone that has already had chicken pox already has it hiding in their
nervous system.  Anyone that has been vaccinated for chicken pox is immune,
right?  That should include pretty near everyone nowadays.

For any adult out there who has had chicken pox, there is a vaccine to
prevent shingles outbreaks.  Insurance won't usually pay for it and its
fairly expensive.  But well worth the money according to anyone who has had
shingles.

Its on my to do list for whenever I'm not in the middle of some other
medical fiasco or other.

Yes, chicken pox is a herpes virus and just like others (Epstein Barr,
CMV, etc) it stays around forever once you have it and has the potential
to re-assert itself particularly in times of stress or in those that are
immunosuppressed.

> Anyone that has been vaccinated for chicken pox is immune,
> right?  That should include pretty near everyone nowadays.

Not all children have been vaccinated or have caught the virus. I had it
at age 13 and it was really bad. It went into my mouth and throat and
all over me (ALL over) and there were really bad secondary infections
and extremely high fevers. Our daughter will be getting vaccinated when
she's old enough.

Really? Do you have a url for this, I'd be interested in reviewing it.
I've been taking valcyclovir for years now. The shingles outbreaks have
been relatively minor (aside from secondary infections) because of this,
but the last two were in my nose and face, near my eyes, which is quite
worrying.

Thanks Kelly. From that article it appears the vaccine is not indicated

Yes, I saw that, too, and it's a shame.

I had chicken pox as a small child, and Rachel caught it from me, when I had
a second very small outbreak. She was just a couple of months shy of being
old enough to get the vaccine. That was the first year it was available, and
I was nervous about her having it, but now I'm hoping that she had the pox
hard enough to keep it from coming back.

My younger daughter Tara had the mildest case of chicken pox I've ever seen.
I wouldn't know she's had it if she hadn't been in preschool where it was
going around and the school director pointed out her single lesion to me.
Her pediatrician confirmed it.  One single blister.

She was exposed many times after that and never got chicken pox again.  But
at thirty she did get shingles for several months.

I don't think you have to get it "hard" to be immune.  And a mild case can
lead to shingles just as easily as a worse case.

I've had to skip my MTX for two weeks for the gut tests.  Maybe I should
make it a third week and get the vaccine.

We thought I'd never had it until I was exposed while working at the
hospital.  Everyone without a confirmed history had to have titers run and
mine came back positive.  Had to have been a VERY mild case.  At least my
immune system cooperated then!  LOL

My immune system works.  It just doesn't know when to quit is all.

When I was very small, just a toddler, my brother had the mumps.  He was six
years older than me and I worshiped him until the day he died.  He taught me
how to walk and how to talk and you get the general idea.

Well, he is home sick and my mother is frantic to keep me from catching it.
I was kind of a sickly kid anyway.  Till the second day when she went to
check on him and I was curled up in his bed asleep.  I never came down with
mumps.  I've been exposed many times since so must have had a very mild case
then.

Well Harv I felt so bad for you guess what????  I also have shingles.
Had major spinal surgery on Dec. 5th, and noticed the last couple days
some pain and burning in the left buttock area, and low and behold the
rash and lesions are coming out, the pain is unbelievable.  So Merry
Christmas to us eh?  Oh well maybe I will get a break one of these days.
Sorry I am feeling sorry for myself right now.  Hope you are doing
better.  Happy Holidays.

Hi Ellie,
The stress of the surgery can do it as well as a lower immune system or just
luck (how much fun is that!).  Be patient as it can take a bit to fix up -
Hopefully you got on the anti-viral quickly as it does help.  I also wrote
Harvey about the oatmeal packs.

Hi Harv,
Oh I know my way around shingles believe me, this is my 4th time.  Yes I
got on the Valtrex immediately as
I had some at home because I have had shingles so much my rheumy gave me
a script to just keep.  When it started with the burning and the pain I
knew right away what it was, so I started the valtrex on my own then
called my rheumy when the rash showed up.  I had a spinal fusion with
screws at the L3-4 level.  And yes I can feel the difference already.  I
have to wear this big plastic brace when I'm up, which is right over my
shingles (they start at the top of my left buttock)and it is quite
uncomfortable, but I can't stay in bed soooo I just deal with it.  I am
learning to deal with pain quite well actually.  They also put me on
Lyrica for nerve pain for my shingles.  What's the saying....What don't
kill us, will heal us or something like that.  Well it didn't spoil my
Christmas plans with the grand kids because I wasn't able to travel(they
both live about 7 hours from me) to see them this year because of the
surgery anyhow.  I am going in the spring and we are having our
Christmas then.  So the grand kids will actually have 2 Christmas's.  I
will just mail the gifts now and take more in the spring.  My rheumy
said it was probably the stress of the surgery that brought them on.
It's all going to be ok, I'm done feeling sorry for myself because this
to will pass.
Happy Holidays all.

I don't know much about ARAVA or how it works or the long term effects of
being off it for a while.  But I would certainly stop my MTX is your
situation.

I've been off it for two weeks for a couple of colon exams.  My hips and SI

I've read conflicting accounts regarding corticosteroids and shingles.
Some say that long term corticosteroid use is more likely to bring on
shingles, while others say that short term use can ease the pain! Some
articles say both and don't go on to elaborate on the potential
contradiction. :(

Methotrexate will prevent the immune system from working to an extent
(cell division) but it also /may/ prevent viral DNA replication and RNA
synthesis! I'm assuming you're only on Arava and not MTX as well, as the
two are contraindicated to be taken together. Arava has an
antiinflamatory component as well as similar mechanism of action with
regards to MTX and inhibition of cellular division. This makes me wonder
if it might be contributing on the one hand and easing the symptoms on
the other.

More pain relief is available than just 'the usual'. Tricyclic
antidepressants are commonly used to reduce the nerve pain involved with
shingles outbreaks.

Cheers,

Ari

Consult your doctor Harv. Some medications while classed as
immunosuppressants will not have a significant effect on the body's
response to the shingles outbreak. I should know this information
already, but it's not coming straight to mind right now. Your doctor
will know the proper procedures now (or the doctor SHOULD know).

Harvey - sorry you're dealing with Shingles. I have it recurring - get
it a minimum of twice a year, and sometimes every 2 months, depending on
how ornery my immune system is being. Very, very painful and
frustrating. In fact i had a dream town nights ago that instead of in my
usual spot on the front of my thigh, I had it on the back of my leg,
covering my butt, and all the way down to my ankle. It was definitely
not a happy dream. I'm feeling a little "bah humbug" this year myself.
Been a rough year. I'll be happy to see 2008 come in.

Hang in there. It will get better. I hope you have pain meds. It's
nearly unbearable at times with no medication (I've been out of pain
medsfor a year due to being in between docs and the last one told me it
was all in my head while looking at the visible damage on the Xrays. As
you often say, "so it goes"

It will get better. Sending you a hug from the wet and rainy grey state
up north.

What does your doctor say about contagion and how long you will be at your
worst?  Perhaps your family could delay part of Christmas and do it a week or
two late at your place?  It wouldn't be entirely the same, but would still
give you some of the family joy AND would give you something to look forward
to while you are going through this torture.

My family has had to shift the gift thing around throughout the years due to

Harvey, I have suffered from shingles and it is not fun. Once the
blisters dry up you will not be contagious. If they are weeping
the varicella virus can be transmitted to others. The pain is
intense.

However, by Christmas, which is still a bit over a week off, you
may be over the worst of it.

I presume your doctor has you on medication for it. Nerve pain is
awful. I was on something for it that gave me bad headaches that
were worse than the shingles so they took me off it.

I used lashings of Calmoseptine lotion on the areas, applied it
often with a cotton ball and just kept layering it on until it
formed a white covering. I think that helped a bit. The nerve
pain that often persists afterward is hell, and it can persist
for ages.

Wear loose clothing. I don't know where your lesions are, but if
they are around your waist, wear loose jogging pants to lessen
pressure. By the way, that old wives' tale about if shingles meet
around the middle you will die, is NOT TRUE.;

Rest, be waited on, take your medicine and the worst should be
over by Christmas.

If you are feeling better by Christmas and the grand-kids can
come over the best advice I can give you is hand-washing. Wash
your hands well before touching them or their toys. Use a liquid
soap if you have one, or get one, forget the antibacterial soaps,
just a good soap, use warm running water, and wash your hands
well, not forgetting the backs of your hands and between the
fingers. Wet your hands before applying the soap. Wash for one
minute, time it by the clock. Dry them well on a clean towel.

Once the blisters have dried you might want to try one of those
creams with Capsacin in it. Sounds wild, but my doctor
recommended it and it does help decrease the nerve pain, sets up
an irritant effect that blots out the nerve pain. I use it when I
get those post-shingles nerve tingling. I certainly wouldn't put
it on a raw lesion though.

Hang in there, and good luck. You will get through this.

Sorry for your suffering. have you been put on Lyrica? Ive heard it is very
good to clear it  up and help the pain.  I take it for my neuropathy and
that is a nerve disorder. might be worth trying. prayers coming for your

I must have missed the original post. Harv - if I read this right, you have
shingles. Oh my goodness - those can be so painful. I pray you will heal
quickly and that your holiday season is filled with health and love.

DON'T LAUGH! Ive heard that topical steroids help..even the over-the-counter
cortisone stuff  ie. 'Cortaid'. OTOH there is some evidence that this causes
the lesions to spread so YMMV. In any case, wishing you well and very rapid
resolution of this painful condition.

Harvey, you poor fellow.  So very sorry you have shingles and sorry that it
happened at this particular time of the year.   But just think about the
reason for the season and you will feel a wee bit better.  I had shingles
when I was a little girl--arround my waist and going around the back.  My
daddy thought iodine was good for anything and everything, and he put iodine
on my shingles.  He had gone to bed when I started crying with them and he
had to get up and take me to the doctor.  I remember him giving me something
to take, but I have no idea what it was, and I don't remember that it lasted
very long.  At least I got out of picking cotton for the rest of the picking
season and I didn't mind that at all.  I do hope you get over this quickly
and that the pain doesn't last long.  Will be praying for you.

Oh my our sweetheart of the south and a picture in time where they put
iodine on everything  AAaaarrrgggg.   My mother in law thought pepper salts
was good for most things until their family doctor in a rage said that he
never wanted to see or hear of her using that again while throwing papers in
the and she sat there amazed or putting(I don't know how to spell it)
coalhole on any kind of scrap or small cut.  Aaah, I feel better already.
Your prayers carry weight.   I remember  in a church meeting where the
preacher was about to hit the door about visiting the sick because he did
get a travel allowance and it was getting very heated.   She slowly stood
and she looked around the room with maybe 100 people.  There was dead
silence.  She said quietly.  Do raise your voice in anger in the house of
the Lord (with every word she got her voice went up ever so little).   That
was power, real power,,, the preacher got another chance and he did better.
Word got around and people paid her the respect she deserved until we moved
from there.  Another little picture from the south.

Harv, I am so sorry to hear this. I know that they are so painful.
Gwen, my daughter had them when she was in grade school. I thought it was
impetigo...So guess what I did...I scrub them...I cannot imagine the pain I
caused her. I was a really bad Mom...I cannot believe I hurt her so bad...
So Harv, at least you don't have to worry about me coming over to give them
a good scrubbing...
Praying that they subside very quickly..

have had this?    It has stopped by Lung doctor appointment,,, a stress test

Lib&*&^  No, no not even them.    I am going to be careful and plan what I

Kelly - 18 Dec 2007 00:42 GMT
Did the doctor give you the anti-viral medication Harvey?  It should cut the
time in half but is only good if they catch it quickly.  Neurontin should
help as well but I am afraid the best cure is time itself.  And lots of
baths with oatmeal helps too but not too hot.  I tended to put oatmeal into
a thin sock and tie it with a tie wrap, put the bag into the bath or get it
very wet in a shower and pat the area.  It is the same as aveeno (which we
all know is expensive.)  it moisturizes the area.

My thoughts are with you.  Won't tell you how long it took for the pain and
itching to go away.  What a pain - literally.

thanks Kelly,,,,,

My thoughts on this is,,,,,, all our fancy medicine and offices and the big
THEY can do nothing about a   "virus".    This virus has been resting,
hiding in the root nerves along my spine probably for years and years just
like it is doing the same with many of you and some trigger will turn it on
to give you a big supprise.    What turned mine on was a reaction to the
eletro salve that the tech. used to sonic scan my heart.   He smeared a
little on the back of my left arm and it broke out almost right away.    The
front, the back, the side all had a cluster of outbreaks.   The arm and the
front was the only expansion that kind of grew together.
Did all this have anything to do with my being diagnosed with RA  25
years ago??   How many things in our lives is caused by a virus?   Not
enough information to answer either question IMO,  what do you think?
Harv

It sounds like they really need to see each other for Christmas.  You too of
course, but I'm guessing by now you know how to take joy in their happiness.
Even if you are feeling top of the world yourself.

Poor Harv, shingles!  I had them years ago on my upper back.  Back then,
they didn't have the meds they must have now, so I think I had to just wait
it out.  You're right, it's hard to describe the pain.  My shingles didn't
look so bad, but the pain and burning went so deep.

Take it easy now.  Kids make Christmas.  And, even though I do know the real
meaning of Christmas, I find myself getting caught up in all the gift
buying.  Time to do some reflection.  Nanny

As do we all,,, I think the merchants have a plan.  I think all the people
that it just burns them to see all the stuff about baby Jesus.  I think a
law should be passed to restrict the amount of time used for Christmas,,,,,
it just wears people out and down.   The idea being to wear people out about
Christ.
:-)  the difference between a young person and an older person is Reflection
time.

Harv.

Belatedly I am afraid. Because I have not been here for a few days.
My profound sympathy. I understand shingles can be very painful,
though fortunately I haven't had it.
I did have chickenpox when I was five - when evacuated to the Isle
Wight (of all places) at the beginning of WW2 - and I understand that
if you have had the disease it can come back at as shingles..

Anyway, I wish you better fast and hope you have a reasonable
(hopefully GOOD) Christmas.

Also best wishes to all you other asp addicts who read this.

Hi Peter,,,, I have found out we have other ASA members that have had as
many as four outbreaks and a couple of them are quietly having an outbreak.
This is all new to me and the people have been pretty good about helping me
to deal.   A Merry Christmas to you and yours  for sure.
