I will be having surgery soon. The surgeon felt around my tummy and said
that I had a good sized hernia and that we had to close it "as soon as
possible." So, if not before the end of the year, definitely the first week
of January. It depends on when they can find an open operating room. He's
going to try to do it laprascopically but I have agreed that if he can't get
the mesh in or if the hernia is just too big by then, that they can reopen
me to fix it. What they do with one this large is slip a mesh (similar to
door screen) under the hernia opening and tack it up to the layer that's
open (that's why laparoscopic is the best method for these surgeries). Then
that layer will scar into the mesh and form a solid front to keep my insides
inside. He made a point to tell me that the recovery is usually painful
because the body will fight having the mesh there. Can't be helped. Hernias
left unfixed can potentially become life-threatening. I'd rather go through
a few weeks of pain than have this sucker rupture or strangle something. The
doctor said the scheduler would call me the next day most likely with the
schedule and instructions for prep steps. I called the surgeon's office
today and his scheduler laughed. She said the doctor may think things work
that fast but they don't. He's completely booked in the operating room
through December so my surgery will probably be the first or second week in
January. In the meantime I am to keep a low profile. No lifting, carrying,
pushing, pulling, or long walks. Sigh. Doing nothing doesn't come easy to
me, but I will try.
When I sit up after laying down, a little "tennis ball" sticks up from my
tummy. It's quite pronounced but goes down as soon as I no longer have my
tummy muscles tight to sit me up. Bob is, of course, mother-henning me.

DeeTee, let Bob mother-hen you as much as he will. You really don't need to
be straining at all until that hernia is repaired and healed completely.
Have you tried lieing on your side and sitting up from that position,
letting your legs go down first? I don't remember what surgery I had, but I
had to do that one time instead of sitting up from being on my back.

Glad it is going to be done sooner than later DeeTee. If it helps my son
worked as a prep cook for 6 months before his surgery date came up - lifting
heavy boxes etc - idiot! He had no problems luckily and he said it really
didn't hurt but he looked pregnant. It was very large. The good thing is
although he had the mesh there was very very little pain during recovery. I
think he took one T3 after and that was it. So that is what I wish for you.
I was so surprised.
Will keep hoping that all goes well. His doctor did say that rarely does it
strangulate or rupture anymore - Ken figured that was a sign to do
everything but....oh to be 21 and stupid. Of course sometimes I think at 25
he is still stupid. Have to remind myself he is an adult now.
Take care, will be hoping for that quick surgery (personally I would want
it the first week of January but then I am still addressing cards.

DeeTee, take is easy. Or try anyway. Its just one more thing or so I try
to tell myself.
Kelly, isn't it scary what passes for adult anymore? Seems like all I do
anymore with the boys is grit my teeth and try to keep my mouth shut.

sigh..... I almost wish it weren't better to do this laparoscopically. I'm
gonna be gun-shy about laparoscopes for years to come! Hopefully you won't
react the way I did though. I hate the fact htat recovery will be painful,
but i like the fact that he was so up front about it. As for taking it easy,
remember what happened when you overdid it moving the furniture and that
should make it easier to be still!
Let us know the surgery date when you have it. I'm already starting the easy
healing prayers!

Sending prayers your way, DeeTee. Listen to the doctors. I know it's
hard to do nothing, but sometimes that is what our bodies need. So let
Bob be the mother hen, and you be the drill sargeant and bark the orders
:))))
