Anyone allergic to niacin?

Ok, for starters, I could be mistaken about drug as I don't hear very well
and I was sedated, but.

I had a coloniscopy on Wednesday.  Shortly before the procedure the nurse
gave me a couple of pills to dissolve under my tongue.  They were to prevent
spasms during the procedure and I'm almost sure she said it was niacin.

By Wednesday night the area under my tongue was very red and swollen.  So
was the inside of my lower lip to a degree.  It was worse on Thursday, but
there was no itching anywhere and it wasn't affecting my breathing so I took
some Benedryl and took a nap.  I talked to the doctor later, and he said he
had never heard of anyone having a reaction like that to the pills.  He
asked all the right questions to be sure I wasn't having a systemic allergic
reaction and told me to take some more benedryl.

I don't need to start a long list of drug allergies.  I know I can't take
penicillin or iodine.

I think I took niacin years ago for carpal tunnel or ringing in my ears.
(Memory is shot too) I don't recall a problem then, but I don't recall a lot
of things anymore.

I don't think it was vitamin B, maybe something that sounded similar.
You aught to go back and find out what it was that you were given.

It sounds like you need to make sure you are eating real food with a
balanced regimen. No offence but too many people these days live on
snacks and get a malnutrition related problem.

Eat one of those salad  or stir-fry mixes every other day for a start,
if you fend for yourself. It's bad enough eating out of tins as most
tend to do in the sophisticated west but eating some foods actually
puts poison into your system and gives associated allergies.

Here in Britain a very large and respected chocolate manufacturer has
been permitting a leaking sewer to infect all its output from one
factory for years.

It cost too much to repair the plant so they let it run until design
failure eventually made rebuilding necessary.

(That's my interpretation of recent events at Cadbury's. Most factory
buildings have a fairly short design life so 5 or 10 years into
problem, plant replacement will usually see the management arranging
reconstruction.)

jo, i've had numerous colonoscopies and endoscopies and this is a
first. Do find out what you were given so you can avoid it in the
future. Niacin is known to make people flush and feel very warm, so
it's certainly possible to have a reaction to it.

Hope the colonoscopy results are good!

I was given persantine to have heart scan because I could not walk the
treadmill.  That stuff almost did me in.  Fortuntely my doctor was in the
building and they called him immediately.  I was shaking all over, cold,
afraid, and the folks doing the test had no idea what to do.  Dr. Chan came
in, gave me a shot of something that stopped it and I was okay.  They had
called my son to come in also.  The next year, they gave me something else
that had no effect on me like the persantine did.

I've had that test, but there was someone standing by in case there was a
problem so they could stop it right away.  It was pretty horrible but I got
through it.  That had to be terrifying, I remember I felt like I was dying,
but it was never uncontrolled.

That happened to me, too, but the specialist stayed in the room the whole
time so when I went into some sort of reaction - uncontrolled blood
pressure, cold sweats, etc., he was right there and already had the medicine
in a syringe for "just in case" scenarios. If they know this stuff can do
that WHY WHY WHY do they keep using it? Are we guinea pigs or something?
Sigh. Don't get me started.

My husband's brother died during that test- age 38.  They can't always bring
you out of it, I'm sorry to say.  But then his heart was in terrible shape-
he'd beena heavy illegal drug user for many years.  I'm sure that had a lot
to do with it.  (sigh)

Thanks.  Results weren't great, as they couldn't get as far as they needed
to.  I have to go this week to radiology for the old fashioned barium sort.
Ugh.  Ruined three days last week and this week doesn't look like fun
either.

Charlie's knee is getting bad, so when we need to go to the store we
basically sit and say "I don't want to go, you go".  For the most part I get
away with it as he wants beer more than I need most anything.

I know how you feel Jo.   When I had a CT scan of my lungs and heart, the
lady put that iodine in me for the last part of it and as she was doing that
she said "oh,, by the way do you take medicine for type two diabetes"?  I
said yes and I took to Glucovance this morning and her jaw dropppped.  She
said that I should not take anymore for two days...  I said,,, WHY,,,, she
said that the iodine and gluco. causes serious kidney failure and it was my
turn for the jaw dropping stuff.  I mumbled something like,,, a little
sooner with the question would of been good.   I did tell my doctor about it
and told him to do his other patients a favor that have type 2 not to take
their morning pills on a CT scan day.

That reminds me, I'd better call radiology and make sure they don't have any
last minute iodine plans for me this Thursday.

That allergy isn't unusual, you would think they would give some advance
warning.

I already went through one messed up procedure where they thought they were
going to inject iodine half way through, and we got to that point and had to
quit.  I've taken it about five times but the last time was the last time.

(I keep a shot glass next the the Benedryl)

That sure sounds scary. I know the allergic reactions too well. Never had
one to that yet though.

I sure hope your week has gone better than last week. I saw where you were
still going in for testing.

I hope  Charlie's knee is doing better. This weather we have been having is
terrible for us with arthritis isn't it.

Take care and let us know how it is going.

Charlie's knee finally got bad enough, he has a doctors appointment in
January.  He was starting to have shoulder problems too.  I think from
trying to protect his knee.  You know its bad when he finally calls the
doctor.

I'm having another fun day today.  Clean out day again as I have a Barium
X-ray tomorrow morning.  This is getting really old.

I called and they promised no niacin and no iodine tomorrow.

Kayla at least loves the weather.  But I really wish it would finally rain.

That is scary isn't it. The other day, Jim admitted to not feeling good and
I wasn't sure weather to call 911 or not. That was saying something if he
didn't say he was fine. He even said he was fine when having a heart attack.
So that one kind of scared me. ;-)

I hope Charlie can get some good help with it all.

I hope all goes well with you tomorrow. I also have an appt with the gyn to
find out if something is growing or not, they are not sure what we are
dealing with here which makes it even more fun. ;-)

So I wish you luck and will be praying all goes well with you this time and
it all turns out good.

Typical guy thing - lets wait until it is really bad.  Got one of them at
home - come to think of it 3 but the boys have moved out.

Will be thinking of you today.  The clean out for those things I swear is
worse than the procedure.

Take care,
Kelly

Thank you.  It was pretty awful.  Two cleanouts in eight days is miserable.
At least that's over for now.

I just hope there was nothing wrong for them to find.
