I know -- never around and trot in here asking for prayers. But you
guys are so good at this... :)
I was sitting Noah yesterday and just as Jen arrived to pick him up,
she got a call from her MIL. Her SIL and DIL are at Children's
Hospital in Boston with their one month old baby girl Emerson.
Apparently, at her one month check up yesterday, the doctor discovered
swelling on the brain and cysts. She was sent immediatly to CH and
will be operated on this morning to install a shunt.
Jen says her SIL is crying non stop which is totally understandable --
afterall she is still nursing and has all those I just gave birth
hormones running rampant. Makes you cry over stupid things and this in
not a stupid thing.
Anyway, if you guys could kick in the prayer machine for little
Emerson, I would appreciate it. I went to bed thinking of her and woke
up thinking of her,

Prayers on the way.  (As well as purrs from the residents, some folks swear
by them)

I know how upsetting this is.  The parents have to be frantic.

Our "son" Danny's grandson had to have a shunt put in shortly after birth.
He's about eight now and there haven't been any further problems.

Thanks everyone for the prayers. Surgery went very well and the
doctors are pleased. The shunt goes from the brain to the stomach
which is what some of the info on line I was reading told me. They
told the parents that the shunt was permanent and would stay there
forever. Now how is something put in a baby suppose to grow with the
baby into adulthood....   Maybe I can get that questioned asked and
answered in the future.
The unsettling point at this time is they told the parents that they
won't know for awhile whether there has been any brain damage due to
the pressure on the brain. You would have thought they could have
waited a day or so for that news but maybe they asked the question and
got answered. Hurts my heart to think of that.
If I get anymore updates I will let you all know.

There is quite a bit of tubing which will uncoil as she grows.
Shunts do have to be replaced from time to time, one in a small
baby might not be long enough, or it 'could' block, but the
parents will probably be taught how to massage it if necessary.
It drains into the abdominal cavity, not the actual stomach.
Babies do very well with shunts and we can just hope that they
got hers in in time. Babies are very resilient, be brave.

Please do, Duckie, this is so hard for the parents, but they will
roll with the punches. Parents are phenomenal.

That's excellent news that the surgery went well.  The first step in this
journey and now they'll be learning what to watch for.  I'd think with a
child tat young, it could be months or even years before any brain damage
showed up.  For that matter, if there is any, than other parts of the brain
will most likely just take over those functions - the brain is very good that
way in infants.

I will keep them in my prayers.

From what I heard/saw when others have discussed their shunts on a TV show
(Little People, Big World on The Learning Channel), shunts do need to be
replaced as children grow as the tube will no longer go all the way to the
stomach. Shunts can also fail (kink, get blocked, collapse) and need
replacing. But many, many people live with shunts and it is a good, simple
fix for a life threatening problem.

As for the possibility of permanent damage, it is the medical professional's
responsibility to provide as much information as is reasonable. And since
the shunt was put in to prevent further damage, the obvious issue becomes,
"has there already been damage?" Its a CYA thing.

I'm glad Emerson came through the surgery well. Prayers for best possible
outcome will continue.

Glad things have gone well so far.

Sending some extra prayers for Jen.  I'll bet she is surprised (and scared)
at  how hard this is hitting her since now she's a mother herself.

Yes to that Jo and I am surprised at how hard I took it too. There but
for the grace of God....
Have heard nothing new and I am taking that to be good news. As
someone said -- It will probably be a long time before they can
actually tell if there has been some if any brain damage.
Thanks all for your support.

just an FYI, duckie. i'm sure it's different for an infant, but my
nephew had a shunt put in when he was 15. he's now 41 and has had the
same shunt all this time.
