We have lots of standard replies here to folks who are scared of taking
methotrexate (mtx). In your case, if you still might want to get pregnant
anytime in the near future, you bsolutely want to stay clear of this med.
otherwise, though, keep in mind that much of what you read about mtx is
referring to the much higher doses that are given for chemotherapy. In has
now been in use for RA for a good 30 years with lots of very good results. I
can tell you that my own father took it for over 20 years before his death
from a heart attack. It helped make those 20 years much more endurable.
You do have to avoid alcohol completely until you know how your liver
responds to the mtx and then limit your intake per your doctor. You have to
have your bloodwork checked regularly to assess for any possible liver
damage. you take high doses of folic acid to help offset side effects
resulting from the folic cid depletion mtx causes. Aside from them, it's
really a fairly nice, inexpensive treatment for RA. It will be much more
effective over the longterm than any homeopathic therapies and will help to
prevent permanent joint damage. Remember, always, that the goal now is to
prevent joint damage before it happens. New treatments are appearing
regularly, but once a joint is damage, nothing can be done to reverse it to
it's naturally functioning state.
