I am so over this insurance hell

shenmei9wise@gmail.com - 03 Dec 2007 17:58 GMT So I opened my little holiday gift from my insurance company (CIGNA) and found that my rates had gone up (actually everyone's rates had gone up) 48.6 percent . I will now be paying 1850.86 cents for health insurance. It is a matter of mortgage or insurance. i do not have that kind of money. This reminds me too much of last year when pac advantage pulled out of california leaving me with Kaiser which was basically no insurance. i spent the month of December doing all the things like DEXA scans, cat scans. I am beginning to dread December.
So I think I have two options; moving to Missouri where I can get insurance through my Uncle's company or going on disability. I probably qualify for disability. It is just a shame though, to enter that system because I can't afford health insurance. There is something very very wrong with this system that makes it impossible for people to afford health care insurance.
I am thinking about a little performance art project where I will get a friend to come a shoot (video) me, head down to the mall, make some signs explaining the fact that CIGNA has raised rates to an unaffordable level, and panhandle for insurance money. Of course, I would get no money but for sure I can post that on youtube and possibly bring a little awareness to the issue. What the "system" loses with me going on disability is significant but i have to tell you i am sick of spending time chasing health insurance.
sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 03 Dec 2007 19:39 GMT M, if I had not gone on Medicare several years ago, I would be completely bankrupt by now. There is no way I could have afforded insurance coverage, or paid my medical bills, otherwise. I do empathize with you. Love, Gwen

ANN M - 04 Dec 2007 00:13 GMT M, That amount if really outrageous. My last payment was $525/month a few years ago before my Medicare came through. I had to pay it under Cobra for a long time because it takes 2 years to get Medicare after going on disability. Is there any group you can join to get lower group rates. Sometimes fraternal organizations, unions, etc band together. I know my hairdresser joined an independent beauticians' group to lower her rates. Ann
Squirrely - 03 Dec 2007 20:07 GMT This is what good ole Arnie is doing for us huh.
Oh M, I hope something works out for you and soon. I understand this issue all too well as you know since I can't afford insurance at all.
Signature Love and Hugs to all Jo the squirrely one I am nuts about you.

DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 04 Dec 2007 11:18 GMT M - I wonder what would happen if you wrote to "Arnie" about this. Maybe something could be done on an individual basis. Or call your local TV station and see if they have an advocate there. If nothing moe the plight would be out in the open and maybe someone could step in to stop it.
Just a thought, DeeTee

hugs. i can't picture you in missouri somehow.

Hi Diane, that is my monthly rate. it is the group plan for TEIGIT (the entertainment industry group insurance trust) the umbrella group for NWU. The whole entire group had a 48.6 per cent raise.
It's kind of nuts in actuality.

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 04 Dec 2007 02:54 GMT My Medicare Part D has been with Cigna this year. It won't be in 2008. The price went WAY up and the benefits were cut WAY down! I'm still looking! Gwen

For generic drugs, I go to Walmart as they only charge $4, and I have 3 prescriptions. I get my Coreg from a prescription plan for free and my doctor is great with samples of the other drug I take.
If you find a really good one, please post it here. I'm sure we'd all like to find the best we can get for our money.
Thanks, Carole
sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 05 Dec 2007 03:47 GMT Carole, right now I'm thinking of going with SilverScript Plus. The plan is only $42 a month with no deductible and some coverage through the gap. I'm going to talk to my pharmacist before I completely decide. I am now under catastrophic coverage and my drug bill for November was less than $100. Quite a change from the gap! Gwen

Have been thinking about this trying to brainstorm, to get attention to this issue -
Does Governor Terminator have any health care/insurance initiatives? Groups fighting privatization might use this rise to over 20K a year in premiums to be a good sound bite in their rhetoric? Being forced on the state dole because private insurance company raised rates so high would be good fodder for officials trying to fight privatization as victimization. (hope that's making sense.)
Any watchdog agencies overseeing usurious or otherwise unethical business practices of insurance agencies? Do insurers need to get the increases in premiums approved by any state agency? If yes, approval of this big a hike would make good press for those decrying 'collusive practices' and 'government agencies in hip pocket of insurers.'
Any disability rights organization working on people being forced off private insurance?

I am also in N.C. I am on Medicare but I also have a BC/BS of NC policy. It went down last yr but already got a letter telling me increase for Jan. It is not a supplment policy but one i had before I became disabled.
I would like to drop the policy and get a supplement. I am paying $300 for the BC and $100 approx for Medicare. I keep the BC policy in case I ever loose my Disability. I would be unable to get insurance again w/ all the pre-existing stuff (both hips replaced, lumbar and neck fusion).
When do you reach the point where you feel comfortable dropping a regular policy and just going with a Supplment? At my age, 49, I am just afraid one day I will fail a SSD review and loose my Medicare.

Carole - 04 Dec 2007 21:19 GMT I totally empathize with you. And the trouble with disability is then you have to wait two years to get Medicare. Since Cingular Wireless is a totally screwed up company, I lost my COBRA (no one could find the papers I sent even though they were sent with my payment check and they cashed that), so I went for over 6 months with no health insurance. I was lucky that nothing big happened to me. With congestive heart failure, the bills can add up very fast.
I hope at some point they will do something about health coverage in this country.

Aim - 05 Dec 2007 05:10 GMT I relate completely, M. We were just notified we're being sued for $1200 in medical bills that my insurance company should have paid in 2003. I will take it up with the insurance company, but I have to pay off the collection agency FIRST as I've got a 20-day deadline before they garnish my wages.
It's very frustrating. Here i am with a lawsuit due to insurance shenanigans ("oh they billed us wrong, we won't pay it and won't tell her") and I have to pull $1200 out my ___.
After the burglary in January, car accident in May and T being out of work for 4 months this summer, we're already behind on everything.
I'm feeling a little bit hopeless at the moment... I wish i had a rich old relative I never knew about.

Nann Bell - 05 Dec 2007 06:06 GMT aye, m, that is just nuts. I agree with you - there is something very wrong with our system as it stands. My brother is self-employed and I know keeping him and my SIL in insurance has been a real trial. Their rates saw an astrnomical rise last year, even with their deductible changing from $1000 to $5000. I don't know when, if ever, our national officials will find the guts to deal with it head on. I keep saying we need to make it so Congress has to buy private insurance on the open market. things would change very fast if tat happened!

eleanor9 - 22 Jan 2008 03:08 GMT I also got hit with 48.6 rate5 rate hikes here in Los Angeles from CIGNA Healthcare. Are you a California member of TEIGIT, the Entertaiment Industry Group Insurance Trust? I am tired of borrowing to pay these high premiums. And I got turned down by Medicare, because I was a little above the earnings limit. Every time I apply to other health plans I get turned down due to "pre-existing condtions." If you haven't moved to Missouri yet or gotten on Medicare, please contact me, I think I have found a lawyer who may be able to help fightCigna. kf
