Saw my RD on Wed. and he seems to think all the pain in my ribs and chest is
RA.  Has anyone heard of this?  I trust my doc but this just seems weird to
me.  Not sure why it should since I have RA everywhere else.  Does anyone
have it in those locations?

Thanks,

Jean

Yes Jean,,, I have and I have had that.   The area that is inflamed might be
a little different but RA does that.   Anywhere in your body where there is
cartilage, tendons, support structure,,, even your eye lenses support
structure,,, even your ears,,, ya  know the bones,,, hammer anvil and
stirrup have support structure,,, like the cartilage that holds our ribs
together.   It is why we do our best to control what we have.
What worked for me was three small steroid shots in the rib section on
the back side.   It has not bothered me since but I know that it could be
needed again.

What so many of us tend to forget, is that RA is a systemic disease,
meaning it can effect any part of our body at any time.  Having the
inflammation in the chest area is not uncommon, but can be extremely
uncomfortable.   Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Oh Jean, I am sorry to hear this. I don't have RA but boy I know the chest
pain I have costo and my MPS flares up the back and throws it into the chest
too. So I feel for you. I hope it gets better soon.

How do you know the difference between RA in the chest and heartburn if you
have reflux?

In my case, and I get chest pain both from RA (Costo pain) and gerd, I can't
tell them apart.

Not the pain itself.

But heartburn and gerd pain come and go based on when and what you eat,
where RA pain comes and hopefully goes based on your activity and movement.

1) by the response, or lack thereof to antacids.
2) by pressing against the ribs - costo is painfl to the touch and I've never
known gerd to be.

but of course, it is possible to have some of each happening at the same time
:-(

Mine is associated with PA rather than RA.  It's called costochondritis and
has ranged from annoying to breath-taking (literally, I could not tolerate
more tahn the shallowest breathing).  In brief, your ribs are 2/3 bone, 1/3
cartilage, with the latter allowing for the expansion & contraction of the
ribcage.  Inflammation can stick that 1/3 cartilage and make everything
tortrous.  All the usual anti-inflammatory strategies are useful, everyone
has to find the most useful for them.  My last bad flare was around last
Christmas - couldn't even tolerate the shoulder harness in the car.  A dose
pack of medrol worked wondrs for me that time.

When I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in 1976, I was given a set
of deep breathing exercises to do every day the rest of my life.

I now have very limited chest expansion due to the fusing and pain in my
ribs.

AS has crept from the lower back to the neck (which is fused to the point
that I now have 15 degree ROM left and right).  It's resulted in two THR (L
and R) and the knees may be next.  I've had three flairs of acute iritis -
inflammation of the eye - caused by AS.

It all boils down to the fact that these inflammatory diseases travel and
can attack any part of the body - any joint, any organ.

Very important for you and everyone else with one of these diseases - I hope
your doctors have given all you deep breathing exercises at part of your PT.
It is extremely important, else you have a chance of winding up on oxygen
tanks at an early age.

Thank you all for your responses.

I'm a little concerned now though as my RD seemed quite flippant about it.
I explained the pain and pointed to the hurting areas and he said ... "It's
the rheumatoid ... see that chart behind you and all those bones."  And
that's it.  Nothing else.  To be honest, the man's bedside manner sucks but
I don't go to the Dr. to get coddled.  I need to know what's happening and
what can be done about it.  This time he just kind of blew it off, but in
the past has always been good at keeping me as pain free as possible and not
concerned with giving me pain meds when I need them.

Hmmm .... it may be time to find a different RD if this is something I
really need to get on top of quick.  The pain isn't constant ... comes and
goes.  And it's not a debilitating pain ... just aggravating.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Jean

It could be he was just having a bad day since you said he pretty much works
with you other times. You could give him one more try about it and see what
he says and then look for another.

Nothing is more aggravating than a pain that comes and goes.  You never know
quite when to expect it.  I used to fix radios and navigation equipment in
the Navy (years ago) and I hated to see a squawk come in on Intermittent
Operation.  They were so hard to duplicate, and that darn pain always seems
to hit just as you start to relax.... Ouch!

That's exactly the way it is with a squeal or rattle in your car, that
doesn't do anything when you take it to a shop.

Or a toothache that stops on the way to the dentist and you keep probing the
spot so you can remember where it is.

I had a problem with my car once that was so odd, the mechanic drove my car
home one night and then tried to start it in the morning.  He was able to
see then what was wrong.  I don't remember exactly what it was.

I have a friend that used to do that in the air force.   He would just swap
out the equipment and do the fixing on the bench in his workshop and those
that he could not fix went back to the supplier.   Back in that time nothing
kept those B 52s from being in the air and half way to the Soviet Union.
They did their job and it stopped a world war.  I do not think the people of
today have the stomach for that now.   We really do not Gods blessings this
Thanksgiving.

Don't worry Harv

"the people" never had the stomach for it.

But then there are the rest of us and the job still gets done.

I wish it were possible to share with you the thrill I feel every time I go
our to our local Beale AFB.  Watching the Air Force of today work out touch
and go with planes you used to only dream of.  Seeing those wonderful young
men and women go about their lives and stay ready to keep us safe.
