disgusting mold on brace problem

i have an arizona brace (all leather on metal frame, molded to fit my
foot and ankle). I've had it about two years. this past year, i
noticed black spots, some quite large, appearing on the inside
leather. looked like mold. i contacted the place that fitted me for
it, and they sent pictures of it to the arizona brace people, who said
it IS mold and i must not be wearing socks or washing my feet! (well,
not in so many words, but they did mention the word "hygeine.") i've
never worn the brace without my kneehigh support stockings (quite the
elegant look) and i wash the stockings almost every night, rotating
with several other pairs. reminds me of this old poem:

Marguerite, go wash your feet;
The board of health's across the street.

Anyhow, whatever the cause, i have mold in my brace and i can't get it
out.
the arizona brace people suggested using alcohol on it. did nothing. i
tried a diluted bleach solution. did absolutely nothing. does anyone
have a miraculous suggestion for getting rid of these spots? by the
way, they are multiplying. i may need to get the liner replaced, but
would like that as a last resort because i really can't walk without
the brace.

thanks for listening,
dirty di

Diane,

I wonder if perhaps some peroxide might work on it.   You could try
diluting it to see if it works and if not, maybe try a little stronger
solution.   Peroxide is good for getting a number of types of stains out
of carpeting and such.   Sure hope you can get this figured out!

I wonder if a bit of lemon juice on it and then putting it out in the
sun would help it any?

I would use full strength laundry bleach. That is the only thing I know
of that can kill black mold.

http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-Mold-from-Leather  suggests using leather
cleaner and conditioner which I would do after using the bleach.

alex, the straight bleach seems to be doing the trick, although the
mold doesn't want to give up the ghost easily. i'm amazed the bleach
hasn't totally destroyed the leather. at least not yet.

thanks for the tip,

If there is an old fashioned shoe maker in your area you could see if
they have any anti-fungal leather treatment to use after the bleach
kills the mold.

During the rainly season, apply mustered oil on the inner side of your
shoes. No fungus will form

http://www.shoeandfootcare.com/submenu-shoe-dryers.htm

Just a couple of thoughts above Diane.  The first came from an article on
monsoons and how to stop fungus's from forming.  The second is an
advertisement (no interest in the company - never heard of them) for
portable and electrical shoe dryers.  Would those help for night to dry any
moisture??

An equestrian place may also have some ideas. They must get questions on
fungus's on saddles??
