Charlie put in his time in the Air Force and another 20 years delivering beer every day. He was hesitant to take retirement at 62, but I told him he had certainly earned it. He's been retired nearly ten years now and there are things we've been able to do that we could not do now.
All these pictures of retirees in perfect health playing golf together and traveling the world are not a guarantee it will be like that for everyone.
We are deciding if we can afford and are up to a trip in April. In the past we might have thought we would do it later. Now we know its now or likely never.

My mom's family lived in Zanesville and north of Cincinnati in the 19th century, but her grandparents all moved away. Today she has cousins in the Cincinnati area with a more distant cousin in Zanesville. We visited them earlier this month. We also found the house that was partially built by my great-great-great grandfather in the 1830s in Vandalia. It's currently for sale as the owners have downsized to a smaller place on the back of the property, but we ran into the owner and he graciously took us inside. You can really see the older part of the house with very thick walls and foot-deep windowsills. He said the original stone cellar is still in place, but we didn't go down there. If only we had 450k to spend on a house there!

I don't know Chapel en le Frith (Derbyshire), but it looks like quite a nice place from the photos.
Somerset is a lot different from the northern hills - flatter, possibly milder, and has a lot of coast. We live fairly close the Jurassic Coast World Heritage area - tho this is in Dorset. Personally, I preferred North Herefordshire where we lived before we came here. It had wonderful countryside, was not overpopulated and allowed easy access to the hills and coasts of mid and north Wales.
Peter.
Carole - 13 Nov 2007 19:35 GMT > Hi Carole. > [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Peter. Chapel is a lovely little town. I always liked walking along the country lanes with the cows on one side and the sheep on the other. At the time I lived in NYC, so it was quite a change :)))
I have friends who live in Ledbury, and I used to have a friend who lived in Nailsworth in the Cotswolds. So I've seen a lot of England and stayed in some very lovely places :) Not to mention, London, which is one of my favorite cities. I think I was born to shop at Harrod's, LOL!! That store just amazes me every time I go there.

Peter - 14 Nov 2007 14:32 GMT > > Hi Carole. > [quoted text clipped - 21 lines] > > Carole Carole.
I think my wife would like to be shop (and has done so) there as well, but regrettably RA prevented me from earning the fortune we had both counted on !
However as we approach our ruby anniversary, we do not regret having made the deal and even managed 2 months in the same small cabin on board ship earlier this year!
PS Anybody got any rubies to spare ?
We know Ledbury and like it. By the way they make a very good Soxon aid there for those who cannot reach their feet (also for post op people with THRs).
Best wishes
Peter

Had a really rough summer. My husband collapsed on June 20th with a bleeding ulcer. Long story short, 2 really scary months, 12 units of blood and 2 surgeries later, he is much better. Trying to get some weight on him now. Now it's all done, I am having major flares in my hips and lower spine. Always something.
On the bright side, I have a Rough Collie, tri bitch named Sabina, just turned 1 yr, she is a real love. Have an 18 wk old red male Doberman, named Cowboy, what a pistol. Still showing my Aussie, Chantilly. She finished her Rally Excellent title on June 3rd and earned an extra leg on the 4th for insurance. I just turned 60 and still busy working, teaching obedience and rally and showing in both events.
Guess everything is ok after all.
Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Kelly - 14 Nov 2007 04:02 GMT 3 dogs - you deserve a medal - especially with 3 that require exercise. My pound special (maybe labdoodle, maybe part bearded collie - maybe just plain tall mutt) hs most commands okay but we still can't trust him off leash - that darn come command just isn't there if he spots a rabbit. I am impressed - it takes so much to train dogs (doesn't help I had just started training him when my neuro crap occured. My husband is not quite as consistent in the come training on long leash and I don't have the strength.) The Rough collie sounds like a sweetie. How old is the aussie??
Tough with your husband - takes so much time to get over surgeries and all. Glad he is better now but of course I can see where that plays havoc with your body. Hopefully things will settle down now.
And yes - there always is a bright side. Good to hear from you,
Kelly
