I really should wait a couple of days before posting this but what the
Hayyy.   It is not everyday that you find out what is going to kill you.  I
went to my family doctor today because of a shortness of breath and
exhaustion if activity is continued.  They x rayed my lungs and the
Rheumtoid lung problem that I have is much worse but at the time I made the
appointment I did not know that my exhaustion was caused my a lack of
oxygen.   I have an upcoming CT scan and the doc and I are going to get
together for a plan.  I have been needing to talk to the doc about this for
over a year.  Now, now don't beat me up for taking all this time.  It only
bothers me when I over do.
I guess he asked me about chest pain, 3-4 times and I told him each time, no
pain only over fatigued which makes me lay down without choice.  I know what
the CT scan is going to show him.  A person can see that in the chest x ray
this morning.  So it goes and it is all about me and I am sorry about that
but I am really down right now.

Are you saying that you have RA in your lungs? Or did they see some kind of
mass?

Either way, you have my sympathy and the biggest hugs I can send across the
web.

We will be here, day and night. Whatever you do, don't drop out on us.

No,  I do not have a mass.  I have a ton of scar tissue.   The doctor says
that my chest sounds Raspy when I breath for him.
There is such a thing as Rheumatoid (sp) lung caused by having RA and
with some people taking Methx makes it much worse.   I took it for about 8
years.   Kelly,  I have been posting in this newsgroup since I was in my
50's.   Spammers, people with a foul mind and mouth, trolls, ect.ect. could
not drive me away, people that got highly upset because I told a person they
were being prayed for or just my God give you strength was enough to set the
San Fran. crowd off with a dozen emails.
I have periods of time where things in life really gets me down and I
take a break but I tell you what is taking place.   If I really stop posting
here ,,, know that I am in a better place and am still praying for the
people in this newsgroup.   Thank you for your kind reply.

Oh, Harv, I'm sorry this has been dropped on you now.  After the CT scan
results it may be best to make an appt. with a pulmonary doc for
management if needed.  There are things that can be done for you no
matter what the lung problem is,  so it's not time yet to be all gloom
and doom.  I will add you to my daily prayers and ask that you get some
good news about all this.

Ooooh, I can't stand that thought either and thank you very much.  It is
going to take another lung doctor to get to the bottom of my lung problem.
My  RD and family doctor have folded their arms and waiting for words of
wisdom from one of those $ 250 a visit guys.   I am not going back to the
old doctor, specialist because of his nurse Ratchet that still works in his
office who I saw again trying to get my CT scan from 3 years ago a couple of
days ago.  :-)  I am not raising my voice to get help from people that you
have to inorder to make them listen to what you have to say.   I am not... I
am not  but ohhh I wanted to.  In Storage,,, my a.s.  eup, eup, not going to
do that.  I am looking into getting an oxygen bottle for people like her.
Sorry

It is to make sure I do not run out of oxygen because of getting upset
buttttt it is just about the right size to get her attention.  The problem
is have a long enough hose to keep from snatching it out of my nose while
doing something about her attitude and manor which needs adjustment.  :-)

Repeat after me Harv.  "I'm not allowed to thwap recalcitrant medical
personnel upside the head with my oxygen bottle"

Our friend and sort of neighbor of thirty plus years was in the hospital and
supposed to die last Christmas from heart failure.  He's still putting
around in his car with his oxygen bottle and appears to feel better than he
has in years.

He now lives elsewhere.  But still comes by to argue with his ex wife and
look after her yard and house, drop off his dog for her too look after etc.
He's French Canadian.  She's Italian.  What can I say.  They are both good
friends.

Hi Harv,
Look at the good not the bad. At least you're not 30 years old and being
told you have those symptoms because you have heart failure and a hole
in your heart from having rheumatic fever when you were 18 months old.

Appreciate every day like the gift it is.

Sending Good Thoughts,

forget to tell God thanks for this day.  One thing about it Alex,  if the

I used to have a co-worker who, when asked how she was, answered, "I woke up
today so I'm off to a good start!"  I heard that many times over the years we
worked together and I try to remember it often.  Of course, we've all known
those days when we weren't so sure it was worth waking up, but it still helps
to keep things in perspective.

My old roadrunner address has been dead for a year. Comcast is changing
everything and I can't get into my account with Sea Monkey to check the
online mailbox settings. They want me to use MS Internet Exploder which
I won't use.

I had turned off their spam blocker but they must have turned it back on
so if my correct address isn't in the To: address I never see it.

If you have me on a bulk list you may as well take me off.

Harv, I know you are down right now.  Anyone would be.  Lack of sufficient
oxygen doesn't help how you feel any more than it helps your health.  There
is still a lot that can be done to improve the length and quality of your
life.

Think not so much that you know what is going to kill you, but only you know
more about the odds.  Still a lot of living to do in the meantime.

Harvey - never apologize for needing support - ever ever!  This is tough and
I know we should probably give you heck for leaving it but goodness knows
most of us have been guilty of doing that a couple of times or so.

First off - don't panic until the final diagnosis comes in!  You need a plan
to fight this as you say and things have come a long way.  If it is only
when you are overdoing it that might be a big help.  Since there is no chest
pain that is good too.

the hardest part i know is the waiting and the acknowledgment that something
is wrong.  I sympathize and empathize!  Now just see what the final tests
say.  And tell us - someone probably has a suggestion on easing some of the
exhaustion.

My gentle hugs Harvey.  I know a bad day takes it out of anyone!

Ya know,,,, I may even get my own little oxygen bottle to carry around.  My
FIL did it for a few years and he kept a great big garden and 3-4 chicken
houses for eggs at 50 cents a dozen year in, year out, for many years.  That
paid for a pretty long stay in the hospital while he fought lung cancer and
emphysema.   Those chickens paid for everything for him and my MIL.  I saw 5
cigar boxes filled with roles of bills and each roll with a rubber band.
My wife and her sister took care of that and I had no part in it.   After my
MIL got cancer of the pancreas and went pretty quick.  They sold the farm to
a young man and woman  from Ill.  Poor as a church mouse they say but they
knew what to do with a farm.   Sorry for running on.
good night
Harv
Kelly - 30 Oct 2007 03:57 GMT
You are not runnning on!  Wonderful story and just goes to show you - you
too can handle this.  You don't have lung cancer and emphysema and although
this is not great there are things that can be done.  An oxygen bottle is
not a bad thing (in Sidney where I just moved from it is considered an
accessory to your walker - unfortunately I didn't have one - no lung
problems.  We had lots of seniors in that town!)

So don't panic yet.  Although I know it is easier to say than do.

{{{{{{{{{{ Harv  }}}}}}}}}}

So sorry to hear that your doctors appointment wasn't what you expected
and kind of took you by surprise.  That's always hard when that happens.

No need to come down on you for waiting so long, sheesh, who of us
hasn't done that a time or two or three?  Just part of our human nature
I guess.

Harv, it is also so very easy to jump right to the worst case scenario
and to think the worst.  Trust me, I have a tendency to do that myself
all the time.

So, Harv, my friend, take a few long deep breaths with me and then tell
youself this is NOT the end of the road.

I'm not trying to minimize what you are going through Harv, but I can
tell you that I have been down this road 2-3 times.  Rheumatoid lung is
a tough one to deal with, but it can be treated and it can improve some.
Usually they treat it with high dose steroids at first and some Imuran.
Yes, you may also need some supplemental oxygen, but Harv it is still
not the end of the road.

I have been on oxygen since 1993 and yes it takes some adjustment, but
you can still live a very full, active, and promising life.

Harv, I will be praying that the CT scan ends up showing that things are
not quite as bad as you think they are and that the doctors are able to
treat this aggressively as soon as possible so that you might even see
improvement.

Know you are not alone in this Harv.  I know I'm not the only one who
has had to deal with this and you will deal with it too.

Your family here on ASA will walk every step of this journey with you
Harv, praying, cheering you on, and doing what ever else it takes to
help you feel more better and more comfortable!!!

Harv, for now, just lean back and bask in all of the love and prayers
and support of your ASA family, feel the love, grace, and mercy
enveloing you, and come here often to unload and talk, we're here for
you Harv!!!

We love you!!!

Just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you.  I'm sorry about
the dx, but hopefully it is not as bad as you fear.  Wait until the
docs get all the info and you go over it again.  You will continue to
be in my thoughts.

:-) I am going to do that and no more over doing.   Having a heart starving
for oxygen is serious business.

Harv,

High dose steroids is one of the first line of treatments in this
problem in your lungs.    You might want to talk to your doctor about
starting the steroids as soon as you get your CT scan done.

I have known about my lungs and Rheum. lung every since I had to be treated
for TB exposure.   The x ray was much worse than then.  I have to get my RD
involved and see what takes place.

ahhhhhh - well shoot

here's what i'm going to hope

that you, like myself - will be told that while you've lost a % of
function [in my case about 40% loss to the fibrosis] that it can be
slowed down from this point onwards.

so you gotta learn to pace things, and do 'em differently but what the
heck - sure beats the alternative right? [ok, so i do get impatient
sometimes and overdo it, but i'm hard headed that way]

and you can always blame it when you forget something [or claim to have
forgotten]!!

each day is a gift - give yourself permission to play as much as you
want!!!

Thanks Paul,,, from what I could see on the x ray which shows scar tissue as
a bright shinny reflection.  From that, I have lost between 1/3 to a 1/4 of
the bottom of both lungs and does not rebuild the held oxygen in my system
after used up.  It is way more than just catching my breath after exercise.
I am using Advair 100/50 twice a day now and I do not know how much help it
will be.

Harv, I'm now on Prednisone for my lungs, and I have the fat face to prove
it!

Hi Gwen,  That is the one question that I thought of at the doctors that I
forgot to ask.   I have a couple of months supply of pred. but I do not know
if it will help this problem.

Hi Nanny,  You know that support is not about ones self but it has its own
reward of making someone's life more livable.
thanks

I'm saddened to read of your current situation Harv. Hang in there big guy,
there is much to yet enjoy in life.
One step in front of the other and live in this moment, not the future. You
might get hit by a falling piano before
your lungs are gone.

Just to let you know, Harvey, that you are in all of our prayers.  We're not
here just to sympathize over the final report but to give you strength
during the first oh-oh's and the testing .  Now you know part of what is
wrong.  Keep your chin up and keep us informed so we can pray along with and
for you.

{{{{{{{{{{Harv}}}}}}}}}}

No wisdom. Everyone else has done a great job on that part.

Hope the new pulmonologist is sharp, creative, and helpful.

The quality of a Dr.'s staff is key to getting appropriate care. We learned
that clearly with my mother's care and wish we'd switched much earlier. Life
is just too short to deal with ego's like the one at the first doctor's
office. But please, control yourself about hitting her. Medical care in
county jails is notoriously terrible.

But Adelle,,,, she neeeeeeeeds it.   Later,   I would cradle her head in my
arms and tell her that she can not treat people like she does without some
payback but my payback is going to be that another doctor will have my
business so that I do not get reminded how it is behind bars.

That's right, hit them where it hurts most! The revenue stream!
