Does anyone have experience with global positioning devices? I'd like to
purchase a portable unit so we can move it between vehicles. I'm not good
at understanding direction booklets (I really don't want to know 274 pgs. of
info about my cell phone). Any suggestions on which unit is easy to use.
My geek savvy sister bought a Garmin and spent 2 days learning it and
finally had Garmin agree with her that they had packaged the wrong
instruction/software for her unit. I'd never be able to figure that
out--I'd just assume I was too dumb to learn it. Thanks. Jano

i'll be following this thread with interest, jano, because i'm thinking
about purchasing a portable one, too. (i get lost in the grocery sack
looking for my purchases.)
i understand there are some units that require a monthly subscription fee
for daily updating and other units that do not charge that fee. but i've
heard that satelite updating is the way to go. i've also heard that garmin
is one of the better brands. but, i'm with you, in not wanting to have to
wade through a tome to learn how to use it.

I have a Garmin and love it. I programmed it to speak in a nice
English male voice. I call it Nigel. :-)

A warning: do NOT leave it in your car in plain view if you want to find
it there when you get back! These are VERY popular theft items :-/

I take mine out of the holder and put it in my purse when I get
out of the car. Of course, if you don't have a purse...........

I have heard on the news that if the GPS holder or the mark on the
windshield from the suction cup is visible that the car may be broken
into so that the would be thief can search for the GPS. If it is
hidden in your car it gets stolen. If you take it with you your car is
still damaged by being broken into. What a world! :-(

I have the 250 model. It is fairly good. If you don't want freeways or toll
roads it will program mostly
state and county highways. Not much good for "back roads" routes. It will
recalculate your route as you drive
once it becomes convinced your not going to turn around and go back to your
misdirection. No matter
whose product, these things can do alot and each has a learning curve. The
reason I bought this one is that it
was on sale on "black friday" for very cheap.

I have the model 350. Gary explained it well. One reason I bought it is that
they have been #1 in fish locators for years and I thought that they should
be able to find roads! I am satisfied but you have to read the book to use
all the features.
