Hi, All...
I just now joined this group and am looking for your experience.
I am having the surgery on Nov. 9th. At Northern Michigan Hospital in
Petoskey by Dr. Hance of Bay Street Orthopaedics.
Dr. Hance did my husbands carple tunnel surgery about 8 years ago with
good results, and he says he does 4-5 of these surgeries a year with a
very good succss rate, but....This is not only my dominant hand, it is
my only hand.  I am an amputee of 27 years.
Can a couple of you tell me of your experiences, either with the
surgery or with Dr. Hance?
Thanks.....

hmmmm, small world - but I'm of no real help.  I don't know doctor Hance, but
I had some work done on my thumb in Jan '06 by Dr Wroblewski of the same
practice.  I was very happy with his work and with my care overall, but I
can't say I've heard anything about Dr. Hance.  I'm on the other side of the
state (Hillman, 22 miles west of Alpena) so haven't picked up anything on the
grapevine.  Wroblewskiis the one at the practice who lists hand surgery as
his special interest, but Hance's creditials looke decent, too.  What is your
general impression of him?  I firmly believe in the value of "gut reactions"
to doctors.

Meanwhile, is there anything specific that scares you about the surgery or is
it a generalized fear of something going wrong and further messing up your
one hand?  I ask because any specific fears really should be addressed with
your doctor and if he can't properly assuage your fears, you might want to
delay the surgery.  It's appropriaate to be nervous and concerned, but
"scared to death" is not a good way to go into a procedure.

We do have a couple of folks here who have had CMC surgery with good results.
They should be along soon to share their experiences.

OMG, Nann, the world just got smaller....I live on Pleasant Valley
about a mile out of town, and work at WalMart. We may have seen each
other dozens of times.

I have a generalized fear of 'something going wrong', not a 'gut
feeling' about the doctor.  Actually, I am very comfortable with him,
but I'm afraid of complications,(nerve damage, etc.) that could make
me even more reliant on my family than I already am.

I'm sure others will chime in to tell me what to expect....Thanks for
your input...

Ok, this is officially getting weird now!  LOL We have a few friends and a
couple of other acquaintances out your way as well as a friend working for
WM.  (not that the last is odd with the lack of employers around here.)

We've only been up here for 3 years.  My husband is the Episcopal priest for
Hillman and Long Rapids.  (In Hillman, that's the church catty-corner from
the Dairy Queen.)  Unfortunately, my body has given us plenty of experience
already in driving to Petoskey for specialists.  Do you go through Gaylord or
Onaway?  We've been over there so much lately, my husband has taken to trying
all sorts of back road routes he digs up on the Gazetter - mostly the
northern route though as my body does not appreciate the current condition of
131.

It's certainly understandable that you worry about permanent damage to your
hand.  I assume this is the first CMC joint, that is, the base of your thumb,
you are having surgery on?  That's usually the CMC joint folks have work done
on.  It's good that you really trust your doctor, that makes a world of
difference.  If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.  We're right
here in town.

I don't know what CMC surgery is, but if it is the base of the thumb as Nann
mentioned I have had it done.  That joint was removed and a tendon from the
inside of my arm was used to make a new joint.  It works perfectly and my
surgery was a complete success.  However, the hand surgeon who did mine
probably does 3 or 4 a month.  I live in Alabama.  Very good luck to you.
