Well, in August I made the decision to lose weight. So I went to a
seminar for lapband surgery and decided that wasn't for me. Then I was
googling and found out that there was a bariatrician (a doctor who
specializes in medically supervised weight control) in my town. I
decided that would be a good idea since I have a lot of weight to lose
and I have congestive heart failure, in addition to arthritis.

I made an appointment and went to see him. It was actually 2
appointments as he does a full evaluation before he talks to you about
which type of weight loss program would be the best. I had to go have
blood tests and I have to be grateful that he ordered those as my blood
sugars were very high and they showed that I have diabetes.  I found
this out on September 7th.  I decided then and there that I would try to
control it with diet and exercise and I'm happy to report that the
endocrinologist said that I'm doing so well that I don't have to take
medication for it. I've gotten my fasting blood sugar down to a range of
109-114. When I had my test it was 173! I'm sticking like glue to my
food plan and exercising almost every day.

I'm also happy to report that I've lost 27 pounds!  I've started a
little webpage so that I can track my progress online. I have two photos
of me that were taken on August 10th, and the last one was taken a
little over a week ago when I had lost 25 pounds. I'm going to keep
having photos taken as I lose more. :-))

Congratulations.  Sounds like being careful and using good sense got you
into a program that is right for you.

You aren't the first person I've known that found a diagnosis of diabetes to
be a blessing in disguise.  Not that its great to have, but it can be great
to know what you are dealing with and get it treated properly.

It probably saved by brother-in-laws life.  Or at least his marriage.  The
really nice man was turning mean when his blood sugar went out of control.
And it dismayed him about as much as it did my sister.

He lost weight just by controlling his diet.  And is his charming self
again.  As long as we remember that traveling can mess up his schedule, and
we have to feed Bill on time.

Glad to hear your brother-in-law got it together. And yes, when your
blood sugar is going bonkers, you do have moody times. I was getting
like that and couldn't figure out what was making me so irritable. Now I
know :)

I'm taking Healthy Weight classes and diabetes classes at the local
hospital. I found out that we have a really excellent educational
program at our local hospital. My medical insurance paid for the
diabetes classes and they gave me a scholarship to take the Healthy
Weight classes since I'm on SSDI. I'm learning a lot and wishing that
they had taught us all of this when I was in school. With the way kids
are putting on weight now, they need to get nutrition classes into the
schools.

The patio is actually my friend's porch. Those are their plants :-)  I
wish I had a porch but I'm in an apartment. I do have a balcony and next
spring I'm going to get some nice plants for it. We have a Half Price
Pots place near my cardiologist's office so I can pop in there and get
some pretty planters :)

carole, what an inspiration you are! i love that you're allowing
others to follow your progress on a website--that's good for you and
good for others who need to see what that kind of commitment can
achieve.

my son in law (35, slender, and good lookin') was diagnosed with
diabetes nearly a year ago. recently my daughter said "thank goodness
for diabetes!", which sounds terrible, but what she meant was that the
whole family is eating better, she's lost weight and looks fantastic
and my grandkids are eating a very healthy diet.

i wish you continued success! with your attitude, i have nod doubt
you'll make your goal.

Yea, diabetes makes you do a total cleanout of the refrigerator and
kitchen cabinets. I started eating healthier when I got Dundee as he
loves his veggies (he's my cockatiel). So I was buying them for him and
I'd have some too. Now I have to eat healthier all around and he likes
that his mommy has a lot of energy now to play with him :))

I will keep updating the website as I go along :)

congratulations, Carole!  what a difficult thing to do, especially when
fighting health problems.  (as I well know - I really need to take off 20-30
pounds myself, but can't keep feeling well enough long enough to make real
progress.)  You are to be commended for taking charge so effectively.

BTW, that lilac shirt is a beautiful color on you, at any weight!

Thanks, Nann. It's the first time I bought a shirt in that color. I
guess I'll have to look for others ones :)  For now I'm just buying a
few things to get me by as I know by next month they will be too big. So
I'm sticking to leggings and tshirts. Once I get down to my goal, then
I'll have to get all new stuff. I have a BIG jar that I'm putting all my
change into now. So that when I get to my goal, I can take it to
Coinstar and go buy new clothes :)

Yes, do indeed look for more shirts in that shade down the road!  It is
lovely on you.

Do you have decent thrift stores in your area?  We have great Salvation Army
and Vincent de Paul stores here and have bought a surprising number of
clothes there.  As I heard one woman comment to a friend in VdeP one day, "at
these prices, you can buy it, wear it for a year, and donate it back next
year if you get tired of it."  But I have noticed the prices in Alpena's
stores are lower than those of their cousin stores down-state.  Still, it's
an economical way to dress through weight loss.

We don't have a VdeP here. We do have a Salvation Army but I think
whoever does the pricing in there thinks that they can charge just a few
dollars less than the department stores. It's much more expensive than
the one we had where I used to live. We do have a terrific Goodwill
store though and I go there a lot. I have gotten a lot of things for my
apartment there, and lately I've been looking at the clothes. I've
picked up a few things. I even got a couple of things that were in sizes
that are too small now, but I will shrink into them :) The prices were
so good and they were so cute, I couldn't pass them up :-)

I also shop the clearance sections on LaneBryant.com and Roamans.com as
I've gotten shirts there for like $6.88. And they often send me "free
shipping" codes :))  My best friend Joan who passed away a little over a
year ago used to say that the two most beautiful words in the English
language were "free shipping" :-)))  She had a good sense of humor :)

Hope you get a bit of sun today Carole.  It is grey, grey grey and pouring
rain like only the pacific northwest can do today.  The sky and water are
the same murky black colour.

We had a HUGE downpour this morning. It was raining so hard it woke me
up. It's brightening up a bit now, although still overcast. They said we
were going to have strong winds later today. I have my diabetes class at
3 and my guitar class at 7:15, so I hope it doesn't get too bad out there :)

Ohhh, that takes me back... My oldest son used to work all summer and save
his money for a trip to buy the clothes for school that he wanted.  One
summer someone took his wallet while he was trying on clothes.  After
talking it over with my mother,  I replaced the money stolen and grandma
gave him double the amount because he was just crushed that his savings were
gone.   What are granmaaasss for?  God rest her.

The $1 for a shirt days are gone though. Even in thrift shops, most
shirts are $5 and pants are $8-10. I'm sticking to a few shirts and
leggings until I hit goal, then I'll have fun :))  In the meantime, I'm
throwing all my change into a can so I can take it to Coinstar when I
need stuff and then I don't feel like I'm spending money :-))

It sounds like you are doing well at finding bargains for the in-between
fitting days!  I have gotten so very spoiled here.  I don't even bother with
looking at the regular price stuff at VdeP any more - I wait until it's
marked down from *their* price for a quick sale!  It's nuts what I've bought
for $1.50 or less.  I have plenty of clothes right now though, or I might
look more at their "regular" priced stuff.

They also cut the buttons off unsellable clothing and sell them in little
ziplock bags for a quarter/bag.  It's a curse for sewer-collectors such as
myself.  My button stock now fills two boxes rather than just one and I'vee
only been buying the fancier buttons at VdeP.  I hear some area sewers buy
ALL of their buttons there.  Now that I'm no longer looking for anything in
particular, I go there much less frequently and it's probably just as well!

I'm going to be doing the same. Between losing weight (I'm 31 pounds
down now :)) and exercising, my body is changing from day to day. So
something that fit two days ago now looks big on me! I have to bag up
all my 2X and 3X stuff and take it to Goodwill or somewhere. I wish they
picked up stuff as I have been this size for so long I have a lot to get
rid of. I may put it up on our local freecycle group so that the people
will come and get it :-))

Dundee says "hi" and from me, you can do this! And it's especially
important since you have diabetes in your family. Just tell yourself you
HAVE to do it. And if people try to tempt you, tell them you have
pre-diabetes and can't have whatever it is. Once you say that, they back
off fast :-))

Way to go, Carole.

My mom has diabetes, controlled by diet and medication.  All at once, it was
no longer under control.  The GP asked my mom if she really needed the
prednisone.  She said, no one had ever questioned it.  They just continued
refilling the prescription.  He asked he to try going without it.  Sugar
dropped down and stayed where it was supposed to, as long as she didn't go
overboard with her carbs and sugars.  So we have had a couple of peaks, but
have been able to figure out what happened.  Other than those two peaks, it
has been behaving itself very nicely.

Great pictures.  You can really see a difference already.  Good luck, girl.

Thanks, Loujean. I have so many doctors monitoring me right now I feel
like a science experiment :) But it's good and they are all working
together. And since I got CHF, I've learned to ask questions and will
only accept answers that I fully understand :-)  I have to watch my
carbs as well, and I've totally given up sugars which was my choice.
