Nann Bell - 24 Sep 2007 05:34 GMT I suspect I have developed an incisional hernia at one of the sites he used for the laparoscopic curgery last week. It's been quite painful all along, from the first time I got up (and the nurse said it was normal then!). Now it's drifting towards the next site over as well. First couple of days I thought it was just part of the process, esp. after what the recovery room nurse said. But today the third site looks lovely and only gives an occasional twinge, whereas this area just up under the ribcage screams when I move.
I'm calling first thing in the morning and I suspect we are looking at a couple of days across state while they fix me up and probably watch me for a day afterwards. Now I almost wish we'd used a surgeon closer by. I thought about calling today, but it doesn't seem to be an emergency situation and I didn't want to have to explain it to an on-call doc 80 miles away, deciding whether to head over.
And besides, Mike's car died in town Friday - his '89 Corolla. If it's minor, we'll repair it, otherwise it will have missed Mike's goal of 300k by 29k and we'll be used car shopping. While I'm putting a call into the surgeon in the morning, Mike will be talking to our mechanic about whether it's worth it to tow the car out here to his shop. It's looking like another interesting month!

d'huit - 24 Sep 2007 06:43 GMT ((((((((((((((((((nann))))))))))))))))) nann, honey, it may or may not be urgernt, but please don't guess. call a friend with wheels and GO to your nearest ER, asap, please. you've just had surgery 4 days ago and this needs to be looked at. a local ER can handle this. you don't have to go 80 miles to have this taken care of.

No, it isn't a new pain, it's hurt like this since I got up in recovery so I do believe I'm ok for now. Would have talked to someone yesterday just to ease the pain if they'd been more local. Actually felt better for part of yesterday.
Anyway, managed to sleep on the couch last night with strategies to keep Puddin' off my tummy while I slept. Best night's sleep of the past few days. Better able to deal with it all now. But they are open there now and I'd best get on the phone. See y'all later this week!

Diane - 24 Sep 2007 16:57 GMT nann, i have missed a bunch of posts, but sounds like you were able to have the surgery laparoscopically (sp?), which is good. i'm SO SORRY that your doc is so far away which makes everything a hassle. I hope you're feeling better today and the discomfort's easing up. if not, i know you'll do what you should to get it taken care of.
mike sounds like my john with regard to cars. 29 miles short of his goal--how sad. i hope the old girl can be fixed up.

It's been quite painful all [quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > another > interesting month! Nann Bell - 25 Sep 2007 22:37 GMT well, long story, but we didn't get me to the surgeon until today and yesterday's conversations with the nurse left me a bit defensive, when i was already borderline hysterical from the pain. (I mean, seriously now, if taking my darvocet around the clock (as I already was) would get on top of the pain, WHY would I be calling?!??!?!?!)
I must have still been a bit over the edge today as the surgeon told me flat-out that he didn't think I was faking or exaggerating it. The verdict is an inflammed and possibly spasming rectus abdominis muscle (the "6-pack" muscle). That laparoscopic "port" was the largest hole he made and it was very close to the muscle. He thinks that set all hell lose in the muscle. Kicked up my pain meds to vicodin and in higher doses, I'll take my zanaflex regularly for a bit and we'll try to get through it. And thinking in muscle terms, I was hitting the Sore-No-More on the drive home (I keep some in the car) and pulled an ice pack out of the freezer as soon as we returned.
Oh, he offered me a hand in getting up from the exam table and I foolishly thought I could sit up normally with his assistance. BIG MISTAKE! On the positive side, he got to see me doubled over, cursing for a couple of minutes. All these years I've been telling Mike to use his abs to lift himself up when standing up and now I have to remember not to do it!
I really wish we had readily available acupuncture here; this really seems like something that could benefit from it. There is someone about 50 miles away, but not anywahere we're traveling soon and Mike's spending lots of time as my driver already. Perhaps I can improve things enough to drive myself there for a treatment.
I almost wish I weren't so accustomed to pain. I'd like to be mean and insistent wih doctors before I reach a steady 9 or 10 on the pain scale! Well, at least this isn't more surgery, but it may take a while to calm down.
Oh, and he'd gotten the path report back - more non-specific inflammation. sigh..........

Diane - 25 Sep 2007 23:21 GMT nann, i'm so sorry! this sounds miserable, with no treatment other than heavier pain meds and time. . . and no answers in the path report to boot. i feel for you, sweetie. please use us for venting purposes several times a day.

((((((((((((((((((((((nann))))))))))))))))))))))) oh, hon, i'm so sorry the path report wasn't more definitive. major bummer! it sounds like they've really got to hit the inflammation-stop button harder for you.
i just cringed while reading your doctor's appmt. account. i hate that you were in that much pain and couldn't get them to up the quality of your pain meds over the phone, before your appointment. it blows me away that he put you on just darvocet!--especially, for that kind of procedure and him knowing full well how close he came to that muscle. (that darvocet stuff never handled surgical pain for me, either.) thank goodness he believed you were in pain and gave you something that does help you.
rest, rest, rest, and take care of you, sweetie.

He pumped lidocaine into all the ports before closing and says he *really* filled that one port. I suscept my fibro and PA issues made me more prone to this. I might have asked for more lidocaine, but this pain was there the first time I got up in recovery so it didn't numb it all that much. I now know that when it got worse over the weekend was probably when the lidocaine was wearing off. Meanwhile, I don't know exactly how the nurse relayed my message to him, especially when the first part of her return call was talking about pain being normal after surgery.
But I'm realizing how much you use your abs for everything! After years of *trying* to use them to keep them strong, I'm now tortured every time I fail to do something only with other muscles. I KNEW there was some reason I didn't want to do this biopsy! I have to lean the seatback at about a 75 degree angle to tolerate the car ride cross state and even then have to hold the shoulder harness away from my body. Somehow the task chair at this computer cradles and supports my back just right so as long as I sit up straight in it, I'm in less pain than most places.
I just can't think of anything else to do to help this reverse itself. I do see my RD tomorrow so maybe he'll have a suggestion. I wonder if a cortisone shot would help

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 27 Sep 2007 02:32 GMT Nann, I'm so sorry your not wanting to do this biopsy proved to be a valid concern. I just pray your RD will have some good ideas to help with the pain and healing. And may it all happen very quickly. Gwen
