I've been curious about something for a while and kept procrastinating,
but finally, here it is...
Last spring, after minor sinus surgery where the anesthesiologists had
trouble intubating me, it occurred to me that maybe I should get a Medic-alert
bracelet to let EMT's know I'm hard to intubate. I've never been treated by an
EMT before, but you never know, right? So I went to the Medic-alert website
and bought an account and a bracelet.
I was a little puzzled by how you tell them what your medical issues
are. They seemed to have several pre-defined issues that you can choose from,
and don't let you write anything "free-form". So I did the best I could.
Instead of having my bracelet say something like "difficult to intubate", it
says:
vertebral subluxation, arthritis bilateral jaw joints (TMJ)
Even though that has a little more detail than my preference it doesn't
say anything about intubation, and it doesn't specify which vertebra are
subluxated (cervical) which is important to know.
I was also a little disappointed that their literature says they'll
keep your medical history on file and tell any EMT's who call the number on the
bracelet. However, from what I could tell, the "history" only consists of
your selection of their pre-defined issues and allergies. I couldn't find a
way to give them any details about my actual history, and no way to say what
surgeries I've had in the past or anything like that that doctors usually want
to know.
Has anybody else had this kind of problem with Medic-alert or have I
somehow missed half of their service?

Medicalert also has an 800 number that you can call, and the nice person on
the other end will be able to put in just what you want known to any
emergency personnel that call the number.
Your message on the bracelet is just cryptic enough that they'll call to
find out what they need to know about those conditions before they do
anything.

There should be a phone number available.
If you need further assistance or have any questions, please call MedicAlert
at 1-888-633-4298. Our Member Services telephone lines are open from 6 a.m.
to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday
(Pacific Time). We are closed on Sundays and holidays.
Also, you can list all your drugs, etc. I have not availed myself of the
medical information, but I do have my living will and power of attorney on
file, as well as my drugs, which can be kept updated online. I did it
because once I had a seizure and I have to take anti-seizure medication as
long as I want to drive. I also have the sticker on my car. I have had to
call them when one of my drugs didn't show up on their prepared list of
available drugs. My drug allergies and "seizures" appear on the back of my
bracelet. They would probably add that intubate information there, also. I
believe you can set up a file where your physician can electronically send
your medical information. Since I have made a separate list of surgical
history, non-surgical history, and allergies that go with my medicine list
(composed on Excel or any spreadsheet program), I haven't availed myself of
that listing. Any questions, use that phone number above and they will be
glad to help you. Good luck. One more thing, check with your local
emergency service and make sure they are aware of the MedicAlert program.
Of course, I live here in Columbia, South Carolina, and, in some things,
they are behind.
