Hi - Had my first encounter with my new best friend today. My RD has put
me immediately onto Methotextrate, 10mg to start and moving up to 20mg over
the next few weeks. I have to go back in 6 weeks to ensure everything is
working as it should, before if I feel unhappy about any side effects. He
says that he will almost certainly have to add another DMARD into the mix to
try and control the RA better. He feels I have a very aggresive form of
RA and was as suprised as I was with the speed with which it has affected
most of my body. That was my worst bit of news. To my relief too,
the meds are covered by the Australian PBS (pharmaceutical benefit scheme).
I can actually afford it. Might get a bit tougher if and when I have to
add more meds. Ultimately, I came away from the visit feeling quite
positive.
I'm starting my Christmas wish list for my kids today. An electric can
opener is number 1. I spent 5 minutes trying to pull off the lid of a
little can of Tuna for my lunchtime sandwich roll this morning! What sort
of tricks do you all use to do simple things like this that prove to be so
difficult with RA?
Thanks so much for being there.

Please do not wait until Christmas to get yourself a ele.can opener. For
me believe it or not, it was turning the key to start my old truck that is
long gone now and so is that kind of finger pain. thank goodness....

You made me smile as I remember one of my last visits to my Mom before her
Alzheimer's got too bad. We made quite a pair. My hands were a mess.
Having a "sausage finger" attack. And I was in one of those blue nylon
boots as I had a really swollen toe that wouldn't let me wear a shoe. I did
all the driving, but always had to ask her to reach over and turn the key,
as well as to buckle and unbuckle my seatbelt.
But we had a ball those two weeks.

Thanks Jo for the memories and it makes a point I try to make every now and
then. We can be in pain,,,,have joint failures,,,, and still have good
memories. For you to have fond memories together when you and your mother
had what you had,,,, dealt with what life deals us and made good
memories,,,,,,, is wonderful and a testimony your spirit and strength.

I hate tops with ring pulls. Can't get my nails under them, etc. I find I
actually do better with my Good Grips hand operated can opener than with an
electric one. I love Good Grips products.

Congratulations for taking that first, big step - seeing a rheumatologist.

And more good news. That is what we like to hear.

Not too often, but when I just can't open a pull-tab can, I use a fork to
lift it. Sometimes I just need to get it lifted, then I can get a finger
through the hole and pull it off.
A screwdriver or similar tool would work as well, if you have one handy in
the kitchen.

I always have to use something with a long strong handle that will go
through the hole for your finger. My arthritic hands don't have enough
strength to open anything!

It sounds like you have a good RD to work with you on fighting back this
stuff. It figures that methotrexate (mtx) would be covered - it's a very
inexpensive med in today's world. Hopefully you'll get some control with
covered meds. Good luck with it all. Did he also put you on folic acid
supplements with the mtx and tell you about drinking lots of water on the day
you take it?

If you google arthritis aids, you'll find lots of different openers to help
with different situations. I'm not sure of the best places to buy them in
your part of the world. I have quite a collection now, some were gifts, some
I bought. I have a battery powered can opener that opens them on the side -
it avoids the issue of the can being too tall for the opener. Also have
something for cans with pull off lids that works fairly well. Then the
Jar-Pop for shallow lids and squares of that grippy shelf liner for opening
jars. I see they are even selling squares of that in US stores now as jar
openers, but it's cheaper to buy a roll and cut your own squares.
My ultimate jar/can opener however is about 6'2", 250 lbs and not for sale!

When you have an excellent can/jar opener, you really want to hang onto it
(him).
