We have a friend who is, I think, 79 and who I know has been going through a
horrible time. Sometime in late winter she went in with an infected toe.
Turned out she had horrible circulation in both legs. Local doctors shipped
her down to Detroit where she had surgery on the worse leg, the left. She
had one infection after another, but was finally allowed to come home. But
despite all efforts, she didn't heal and eventually acquired a major
infection. They did a below the knee amputation on July 5th. She seemed to
be recovering well after some time in rehab and finally getting to come home
for a few days. They went back downstate a couple of days ago for a checkup.
(They do have family in the area - a son and his family - so they can stay
there rather than a motel.)
Anyway, we just got a call from her husband. There was an area on her stump
about the size of a silver dollar that wasn't healing. The docs decided they
needed to go ahead and extend the amputation to above the knee now before
major infeciton set in again. Of course, above the knee is much more
difficult when it comes to fitting and using a prosthetic leg. And this is
yet another surgery after months of medical struggles. She could really use
some of the ASA healing machine. Please, prayers for Mary and for her
husband of almost 60 years who has been watching out for her through many
scary months.

Wow! Her story speaks to the importance of being vigilant for even
seeminly small infections. My thoughts and prayers are with your
friend.

Man O man,,,, it was painful just to read that. She needs prayers
yesterday and she needs healing tomorrow. It just makes me cringe how
this has progressed. In my prayers,,,, now is too late almost. Thanks Nann

My thoughts and prayers are with your friend and her husband. My cousin has
had a similar course of events following a knee replacement that got
infected, so I can relate.

I was waiting to update on Mary until we actually managed to talk to them.
For two days we seemed to call when they were out of the room for some
reason. Mike talked to them yesterday though and Ed, Mary's husband, said
she's doing well and is in good spirits. I don't know how she does it. I
can't imagine going through all this at her age. No estimates yet on when
she'll move to rehab.
A couple of good souls at church who have been keeping the grass mowed for
when Ed & Mary are downstate, went out there this week and built a ramp for
the house to ADA code so it will be easier to get in and out with the
wheelchair. Of course, she can't be fitted for a prosthesis for several
months, until she's all healed and the swelling's gone down. Fortunately,
she has a strong will that carries her through.
We're going downstate for a couple of days. Mike has a meeting and I'm going
along to shop. We're staying over an additional night and going by to see
Mary Before returning on Wednesday. I'll tell her the prayers of this
remarkable group are behind her.
