I wonder if anyone has had something like this. The doctor is
baffled:
I woke up one morning and when I moved my hand I got a severe, sharp
pain in my wrist. It was in the upper wrist on the side under the
pinky. Moving my thumb made it worse, but twisting or any upward
movement of the hand also caused pain - very bad pain.
The orthopedist took x-rays and an MRI. All negative. He figured it
was tendonitis and had me use a brace full time for a month. At the
end of the month it was improving.
I am going to PT and it has improved a bit more but not much. The
pain still occurs when I twist the wrong way or over use the hand, but
not as severely. I can use the hand most of the time but have to wear
a wrist wrap.
The mystery is, every morning when I wake up the pain is back and
almost as bad as it was the first time. After icing it, it feels
better. As the day goes on it feels a bit better, provided I don't
aggravate it by doing something stupid. I tried sleeping with the
brace, without it, with the wrap. Pain is still the same in the
morning. When I sleep my hand and arm are not twisted or under
anything.
Now they don't think it's tendonitis but have no idea what it might
be. Apparently the fact that moving the thumb upward causes pain on
that side is unusual.
All this started 3 months ago.

Is it your main hand? I am right-handed and I have it in my right wrist.
I've gone through the same thing - they call it tendonitis. I've tried
using the brace which helps some but sure gets in the way at the computer.
Trouble with the brace is, I usually forget it until the wrist twinges
again! LOL ouch!

Yes it's my main hand. The brace is so constricting that I tend not
to use it, although I have to put it on when I first wake up because
the pain is so bad.
Does yours hurt more in the morning?

Are you seeing a rheumatologist?
Having Ra has taught me to expect to be surprised by different pains.
Sometimes they stay for weeks and sometimes they move on in days.
There is no rhyme or reason as to where it will strike next.

Had the same thing and was told it was Carpel Tunnel syndrome. After awhile and use of a brace
and more medrol, it stopped being so painful. I have episodes of it now but not as bad as
first time it hit.
Did they mention carpel tunnel syndrome?
If it is like the tendonitis in my ankle and foot, a brace helps then don't then does then
don't. It has to do with the severity of the tendonitis. You get it under control with steriods
and then lower steriods and it hits again.
good luck but ask about CTS

And sorry thumper if you got this post I had hit the REPLY and not to group. My fault duh

I tend to agree with Thumper that it's probably part and parcel of the
roaming RA. I wear braces on both wrists (the kind where your thumb is
immobilized) to bed at night when flaring and when it's really bad I
will wear a brace during the day. You really should check out CTS
though because that can usually be fixed.

It's not carpel tunnel syndrome because the pain is on the outer side of the
hand into the little finger. I've had CTS in both hands and had surgery on
them. There is some tenderness on the outside of the left hand, but nothing
like the right hand. I can't take prednisone, so that eliminates that help.
I was just glad to hear some one else had the "mystery pain". LOL

That's a possibility. I'll ask my doctor about it. My mother had that
problem, but her shoulder hurt, not her hand.
