Pain Relief

Hi Everyone,

My mom has rheumatroid arthritis and has very bad back pain.  She also
has diverticulitis and cannot have aspirin based pain relievers.
Advil works for her but she cannot have it because it contains
aspirin.  Therefore, she is taking Tylenol and it only slightly
relieves the pain in her back.

My question is:  Are there any prescription or OTC medications out
there that will do a better job of relieving the pain than Tylenol
does and that do not contain aspirin?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

For what its worth, Advil doesn't have aspirin in it - it is made of
ibuprofen.  Did her doctor tell her she shouldn't take it?  If so, you
& she should discuss with the doctor the reason, since ibuprofen is
different from aspirin - there may be another reason he/she doesn't
want your mom to take it.

There are tons of other medications - naproxen is one that is sold
over the counter.  She should be seeing a rheumatologist (a doctor who
treats arthritis).  A rheumatologist would be more well-informed about
the various kinds of pain relievers that could help your mom.  Also,
if she takes other medicines, she would need guidance on which pain
medicines would not have adverse interactions with them.

Hope this helped.

Who diagnosed the RA?

Has your mother seen a rheumatologist?
