The reasoning behind this is .. lack of medical care .. due to deaths
OF medical people in Iraq.

Ancient healing technique gains new popularity in Iraq
Posted: 14 June 2007 1214 hrs

BAGHDAD - Haidar al-Hajam carefully placed the glass jars over the
slight incisions on his patient's back and then began to pump out the
air.

In the ensuing vacuum, the thick dark blood slowly oozed out of the
cuts and into the clear containers.

"The Assyrians, the Chinese and the ancient Egyptians all used to
practice cupping to draw out the corrupt blood," said Hajam as he
deftly drained a few more spots on his patient's back in his office in
Baghdad's Sadr City slum.

Murtada Abu Ali, 45, has become a regular for this ancient treatment
known by its Arabic name of 'hijama', or sucking, and says it helps
him in a way no modern medicine can.

"I got fed up with the painkillers doctors were prescribing for my
neck ache, so I decided to use hijama and it's great - I urge others
to try it," he said.

Increasingly Iraqis are following this advice and the ancient
technique is finding renewed popularity in central and southern Iraq
as people use it to cope with the stress of the country's unending
bloodshed.

The idea behind cupping, which was promoted by ancient Greek physician
Galen and medieval Islamic philosopher Ibn Sina (known as Avicenna in
the West), is to stimulate the skin and muscles to release toxins and
improve blood and lymph circulation.

The process is also believed to stimulate the release of histamine-
like substances in the skin which boosts the immune system.

The immediate result, however, is circular discoloration and bruising
where the glass has been placed, but many testify that the process
leaves them rejuvenated.

The technique has long been used in the Arabian countries of the Gulf
and traditionally sections of horn were used, with the vacuum caused
either by the healer sucking out air or burning bits of cotton or
paper to eliminate the oxygen.

Hajam's tools have progressed with the times, however, and are
equipped with tiny pumps to remove the air and grip the skin.

In addition to just aches and pains, the technique has been prescribed
for fevers and disorders of the inner organs, including liver,
stomach, intestines and kidneys and has a firm position on the Western
alternative medicine scene.

"The percentage of those who recover is very high, especially those
who have diseases of the heart and arteries, as well as diabetes,"
said Hajam, who sees up to 30 patients a day.

At first, Hajam asks the patient where it hurts and then places his
cup on the spot, sucks out the air, and leaves it for a few minutes,
before removing the cup.

He then makes a number of small cuts, replaces the cup and once again
sucks out the air, bleeding the wound for several minutes before
sterilizing and bandaging the spot.

The back is the most common areas to be cupped, because the "blood
stream is slow there and a continuous bleeding is ruled out,
furthermore it is less sensitive than other areas," Hajam explained.

"Prophet Mohammed himself used hijama. It is for many diseases, from
headache to arthritis and sciatica, even for sterility for men and
women," he added.

The technique was also traditionally used by the historic pearl divers
of the Gulf to prevent diseases before they embarked on their three-
month-long pearling expeditions out at sea.

"I sought out many physicians but they were all useless, so I decided
to try this," said Abu Tareq, 56, now one of Hajam's regulars. "I feel
energetic and revived now and will continue doing it."

Mushtaq Razzaq, 20, said it was his uncle who turned him on to the
technique. "Before I was always sluggish for no apparent reason, but
now I feel this wonderful change come over my body," he said. - AFP/

Hijamah

The Arabic word "hijamah" means "sucking." In the Arabian Gulf,
Hijamah was used not only for treatment but also for prophylaxis
against diseases.

Saudi Ministry Of Health Prohibits Blood Cupping
Posted Apr 17, 2007
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health has decided to end the practice of
blood cupping until there is documented scientific evidence of its
usefulness.
The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has mandated that the practice
of blood cupping, also known as hijama in Arabic, be stopped until
there is documented scientific evidence of its usefulness. This now
ends one of the oldest medical traditions in the Arab world - and puts
many traditional healers out of work.

"[We] ask people to focus on modern medicine, based on the evidence,"
said Othman Al-Rabiah, coordinator of the Health Services Council.

Many specialist clinics were performing blood cupping until this
ruling came into effect. Cupping is when blood is extracted from the
skin through a small cut and then a cup is attached to the skin that
makes a tight seal on it.

"I have practiced this job for 20 years," said Ali Mejahed, a Yemeni
cupping maker. "I have customers, and if they want me they can phone
me."

Clinic workers are said to be startled and are quite angry about this
decision. They say that the Ministry wasn't forthcoming with cuppers
about their intentions.

"The Ministry of Health ... promised to give us the green light to
practice cupping again after they make new arrangements to organize
it, but we were surprised when they prevented it entirely," said one
cupper, who requested anonymity.

In a show of defiance against the Ministry, some hospitals cupping
clinics are staying open because they don't believe in the ruling.

"This is not right ... most of the people received benefits from
cupping," the owner of one Jeddah hospital, who requested anonymity,
said. "We have opened the cupping clinic in our hospital because we
know how beneficial it is. Also, the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon
him, asked his nation to do it."

Some regular cuppers say that getting cupped has become a habit from
which they receive great benefit and they are willing to flout the law
to continue to do it. "I had a headache, and I visited many hospitals
and many doctors ... but I didn't feel better," a cupper known only as
"Yousif" said. "One of my friends advised me to do cupping ... and for
SR200, including materials I bought at the pharmacy, the man did
cupping for me, and since then I've felt much better."

And, 3, 2, 1 ....

No Ban on Cupping - Council
Sunday, 22 April 2007
By Abdullah Al-Hariri
The Saudi Gazette
THE Council of Health Services has denied reports that the Ministry of
Health has outright prohibited blood cupping, or Hijama, as a method
of treatment."The prohibition of cupping does not mean [the
Ministry]denies cupping as a method of treatment, but we want to avoid
harm to people under treatment," a Ministry official said.
A press statement released on the Ministry Web site said that stories
in the media that depict the prohibition of cupping as violating the
teachings of the Prophet Muhammad was not correct. Instead, they are
trying to combat some cupping practitioners who don't care to follow
the correct steps of cleaning, sterilization, and infection control.
Many recent reports have pointed to incidents where some people being
treated by cupping have developed infectious diseases.
The Council of Health Services issued a decree prohibiting cupping
three months ago based on scientific grounds, saying the benefits of
cupping haven't been proven on a scientific basis. Many cupping
clinics have closed their doors, and last week,Saudi German Hospital
was forced to change the theme of one of its workshops on cupping
after the practice was declared banned by the Ministry.Osman Al-Rabia,
the council's general coordinator, said the council recently rejected
licensing the practice of blood cupping in the Kingdom until its usage
is verified from a scientific point of view, denoting that the council
recognizes only practices that have solid medical grounding.
He said the council directed the Alternative Medicine Center to raise
awareness of this practice in society and follow up on new scientific
findings.

Traditional therapy unit at Al Jazeera includes hijama

By Nada S. Mussallam

A NEW Alternative Medicine Unit that includes a cupping (hijama) and
acupuncture centres was inaugurated recently at the Physiotherapy
Department of Al Jazeera Hospital.
The unit was established on the directives of Shaikh Hamid bin Zayed
Al Nahyan, Chairman of the General Authority for Health Services in
the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, to promote quality health services for the
residents of the UAE. "The alternative or complementary medicines
proved that they follow effective and safe methods for treatment",
said Ahmed Al Rumaithi, Assistant Under-Secretary and Director of the
Authority.

"We should preserve these methods for their traditional and cultural
values and work to develop them in accordance with the scientific
research and the international trends," he said.

Dr Hamad Al Irman, Head of the Department, to know more about the
methods of treatment and their efficacy.

"Hijama or cupping is a branch of medical science which was originally
derived from the Islamic civilisation and other ancient civilisations
like the Chinese civilisation. It is a science that relies on the
theory of energy which states that human body is made up of a meridian
that passes energy to the whole body, said Dr Irman.

Hijama is used to treat different diseases and health problems such as
diabetes, migraine, rheumatism, sinus, irregular menstruation,
sciatica, prostate gland, piles and cholesterol irregularities, which
do not respond to curative therapies, he said.

These cases are usually referred to extensive laboratory tests and
medical consultations before being transferred to the Alternative
Medicine Unit, he noted.

On how hijama functions, Yusuf Khalil Al Yasi, Modern Cupping
Specialist at the Unit, said hijama is derived from the word Hajama
which means sucking of the blood that is believed to be decomposed and
the main cause of ailments. There are two types of hijama. One is dry
hijama in which a cup full of pressurised air is placed over the
targeted spot on the body to rid the blood of harmful acids, he
explained. The second type which is called wet hijama requires making
of small cuts on the spotted area of the body where the blood is
condensed using a sharp blade, said Dr Yasi, noting that both methods
take a maximum of 15 to 30 minutes per session and that the process of
condensing blood is necessary in both types. Hijama can be carried out
in different parts of the body depending on the nature of the disease
itself, he said.

Dr Yasi, who has been in the profession for more than 16 years, said
the percentage of recovery by using hijama is 80 to 90 per cent,
depending on the cases themselves and that even two-month old babies
can go in for hijama. The Unit has so far received more than 90 cases,
he said. Mohammed Abdullah Al Dahiri, Director of Al Jazeera and
Central Hospitals, said that this kind of treatment is applied
worldwide and that the Unit is practising the profession under the
supervision of specialists while implementing the WHO's criteria set
in this field. "We also pay attention to the sterilisation of
instruments used in hijama and other traditional treatments available
at the Unit such as acupuncture, he said.

I, in the past, helped to heal my pain in the overused muscles of my legs
(because of foot deformities) using a technique called needling, where I
poked into the tenderist spot with a needle.  It really worked if you hit
just the right spot that gave a bee sting like feel.  I wonder if the small
cuts in cupping do much the same thing for muscle pain.  It would depend how
deep the cut was.

I've been busy this last year, but see that Ironjustice is still
misquoting badly done third world science to claim that diabetes is
caused by eating meat. And he still claims that Jesus was a
vegetarion, which is pretty damned silly considering the miracle of
the loaves and the fishes, his participation in Passover, etc.
