i have been to the doctor and to the ra doc. about this pain in my ribs and
mostly in my sternum. i mean really severe pain. it hurts to breath, cough,
turn over in bed, or move at all. the doc thought i might have a fracture,
xrays were taken and no fractures.  so what is it? i go back in a week and
have tramadol for pain.  it doesn't touch it. i have a feeling the doctor
has had it with my complaining about being afraid to take boniva or
fosamax due to a reaction to fosamax. i finally got brave and took another
boniva last week. i am thinking this pain is a reaction to boniva. last
night i didn't sleep at all. they have ruled out a heart acting up, a
fracture so what could it be? an ulcer, somr sort of lung thing, something
mtx is doing to my body?  i am too old to have any sort of invasive tests.
your coments will be greatly appreciated.

shirlawn, my first thought is costochondritis. it can make you feel as
though you're having a heart attack.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/costochondritis/DS00626

do these symptoms fit what you're experiencing?

that was really my first thought, too.  Is your sternum tender to pressuer?
Especially just to either side of the midline - and sometimes exquisitely
tender.  I know that"it hurts to breathe" feeling quite well, and sometimes
it even hurts to talk.  Talking loudly almost always hurts.

If this IS what's going on, there are many things that can make it flare.
Almost anything that uses the muscles and tendons that attach to the ribcage
will do it.  It's frustrating, but know which things kick it up can help you
limit those activities.  Even vacuuming does it for me, so I do little else
that causes flares on vacuuming days.

Hi Shirlawn,,,  I have had that twice.   A steroid shot fixed it up and then
a couple of years later,, three small well placed shots made it go away.  RA
attacks our rib connections.

Shirlawn,

So sorry to hear you are having to endure this.  Sounds absolutely
miserable, and I so pray that it eases up for you soon or at least that
the doctors can get this all sorted out and get you much more
comfortable!

You may want to ask them for a high-resolution CT scan of your chest to
see if there is any lung involvement.   The RA can attack any organ and
doesn't always show up on x-rays.   The first time I had RA lung
involvement, nothing ever showed up on x-rays, but showed up quite
extensively on a high-resolution CT scan.

Like the others have said, it could be your ribs are involved in your RA
or you could have pulled a muscle, tendon, ligament, etc.   Those types
of things are usually helped with the steroids and anti-inflamatories.
Does anything seem to help ease it at all for you?   Heat?  Ice? Certain
positions?  Etc.?   Also, did they check for pericarditis?   I have also
had this from the RA and it really truly felt like I was having a heart
attack.   (this isn't as common in RA, but it can happen), so they may
want to do an EKG or echo and check your blood work.

Sending up prayers that you get to feeling better real soon!!!

Hugs,

Donna

thanks for responding.  it has eased up somewhat today.  that seems so odd
to me the way it rather suddenly appears and goes away just as suddenly. i
checked the web site you sent diane, and it does sound a lot like costo--.
i really need a good nights sleep.

I don't take Bonita or fosamax.  My stomach is screwed up enough as it is.

I take miacalcin nasal spray instead.

What you are feeling could be a lot of things, first things that come to my
mind are costeocondritis (inflammation of the connection between the ribs
and the sternum) or gerd.  I don't get heartburn from GERD like a normal
person, but more of a ache in the center of my chest.

The GERD in particular doesn't respond well to pain killers, but a lot of
times costeo doesn't either.

Hope you are able to get it figured out and can get comfortable.

Gerd was the first thing I thought of as that is what I have.  A dose of an
antiacid like Gaviscon helps a great deal.  If it does, I would suggest a
visit to a gastroenterologist and perhaps have an endoscopy done.

Hi Shirlawn.  I just read a report this week in the Fibromyalgia Network
that chest, sternum, rib, stomach and pelvic pain can be due to trigger
points.  Although it may feel you have broken ribs, or a heart attack, it's
probably not the organs themselves, but pain from Myofascial trigger points
in the muscles surrounding the major organs.  Everywhere I touch in those
places hurt.  Nanny

I've been under doctor's care for this for about five years now.  I
have FMS.  That pain is felt in two circles on both sides of my
sternum and one rib below the collar bone-about 2 1/2 inches in
diameter.  I feel the inflammation between the ribs and the sternum in
different places and different numbers.  But I can always say which
ribs are hurting.  And yes the pain starts very suddenly and goes away
when it is ready.  In the mean time, I stay still.  Normal medicine
for inflammation and FMS is all that I take.  I don't do anything
special when it hurts.

Hope this helps and makes sense!

and you were talking about blessings, i would say this group certainly has
been a blessing for me. thanks everyone. it is really crazy-the darn thing
just disappeared  yesterday pm it was a little better, i slept well, and
when i woke up this morning it was gone. just like that-gone, gone, gone.
and to add to the mystery it appeared suddenly too in the beginning.  this
my 3rd episode in the past 4 m0nths.

jo, navy i thought of GERD too, and i hope the doc. doesn't think of that
or he will want an endoscopy.  he has had me take prilosec daily, ever
since he ordered the boniva. so i hope it is protecting my esophagus.

most of you thought of costochronditis. anyway,it is gone for now.

I have found that heartburn will feel like that.  At least it does on me and
a dose of Gaviscon or similar stuff helps a lot.  Glad you are feeling
better, though.

DeeTee and Bob Taggart - 30 Jul 2007 16:43 GMT
Probably costochrondritis, Honey. You'd swear you're having a heart attack,
it hurts so badly. It's inflammation of the cartiledge of the rib cage and
sternum. Ask your doctor about it.

Feel better soon - DeeTee

hi shirl,

i have this sternum pain thing happen a lot and have had for a great many
years.  (i don't know what your spinal situation is like.  so, i don't know
if this would apply to you or not.)  for me, it seems to be related to the
ddd, oa and muscle spasms in my neck and back.  mostly, i think it's muscle
spasms that causes it.  everything, tissue/bone/cartilage, is connected and
once muscle spasms start, anything connected to the area of the spasms seems
to be painfully irritated/aggravated.  a severe back spasm makes my entire
upper torso just about feel like roadkill (or in otherwords, feel severely
battered and bruised, badly strained and sprained) and that can last for
from 3 days to 2 weeks, depending upon exactly where the severe spasm was
and what was affected.  milder, "almost" unnoticeable spasms are less
general in the areas affected, but those effects only last 3 days.  and
tramadol/ultracet doesn't help me, either.  if this sounds like it's a
possibility, what helps me most are heat (heating pads, hot soaks,
jacuzzi/hot tub/whirlpool, thermacare wraps) and gentle massages (not the
deep massages that i generally love).
