Life in these northern zones gets so busy in the summer!  I have, of course,
been quietly building a flare since getting completely off the vacation
medrol.  About a week ago the feet began kicking in and now the little toe on
my left foot is tormenting me.  That toe would have been about 50th on my
list of joints I expected to flare and it has gone from fully behaved to
fully flaring.  By the time I see my RD on the 9th, he should be able to see
some real activity, rather than going by notes from previous RDs.  I had my
blood drawn Friday - cross your fingers that *something* has changed with the
enbrel on hold!

Last week we took a 3 night, 2 day camping trip over to Sleeping Bear Dunes
National Lakeshore.  God must have approved of us doing this, as the first
day was one of those blessed, mysterious good days for me.  I was even
collecting and carrying leftover firewood from sites a quarter mile away!  We
hiked a bit both days.  I was at about half-flare on day 2, but we still
managed the Dune Climb http://www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/dune_climb.htm
in the earlye vening.  Thought about going a bit further for a Lake Michigan
view, but concluded after a bit that the sand was too deep and tiring.  I was
worrying about kicking in leg cramps from this all.  Coming downhill was
really fun though, even on your feet.  You just sink down and down and
down....

Back to full flare now though - hands, wrist, feet and rib cage.  Couldn't
handle buying a watermelon last Thursday, that's for sure!  lol (they looked
good, though!)  I've been trying to catch up on weeding the garden since the
Germany trip, but am only making dents.  Now I'm flying down to Florida
tomorrow to visit with my hometown and go to another reunion of my high
school band.  In the absence of a Gimpfest, this group is next best - similar
level of laughing and acting up!  Just a bit harder to keep up with, lol.
When I get back, I'll be getting ready for the big V-J day commemoration
here, as well as spending a half day to get to my RD appt.  I'll try to
report in on the RD visit, but otherwise will probably be MIA or just quickly
lurking until mid-August.

Prayers continue for all, esp. Joe, Leslie, Kiki, Diane and Diane's sister
for recovery and for all of Adelle's family.  May it be a good couple of
weeks for all.

nann, it was so good to see you back on asa today! your'e so missed,
but it sounds like you have plenty going on, so we understand. I am
floored you could do the kind of camping activity/hiking/dune climbing
you did! wow! no wonder you're flaring. i hope you can get that under
control soon. enjoy the rest of the summer.

hugs,

ummmmmmm, have I mentioned my stubborn streak lately?  LOL  Actually, for me
- in fact, for both of us - camping and day hiking is as vital as paddling is
to Mary Z.  It's a spiritual refreshment/renewal type thing.  The problem her
is that Michigan parks are overwhelmingly designed to cram in as many RVs as
possible, whereas we prefer more isolated tent sites and not having to pay
for hokups we don't even use!  We've tried, and rejected, most of the state
parks.  Have one or two we still like and this National Park and the township
campground we ended up in were both quite nice.  Mike is now 62 and just got
the Senior Pass, so I think we'll return there a lot!

I couldn't do it without Mike though.  He knows we can only tent camp as long
as he can handle the stakes and do most of the water fetching.  And he does
the driving (he's a lousy passenger, anyway!).  We keep our meals simple and
use a lot of teamwork in doing stuff.  He usually gets the fire going.  He's
blessed to have someone who wants to camp as long as possible and I'm blessed
to have someone who makes it possible for me to do what I no longer can
alone.  And we're both blessed that we have don't a meat cleaver in the house
for me to cerry out some of the home amputations I've been threatening some
of my joints with!

((((((((((((((((((((((nann))))))))))))))))))  i can sooo relate to the
"meatcleaver urge".  i think we are both most fortunate that we love
ourselves too much to be that brutal to ourselves.<g>

boy, any kind of foot pain is the pits.  i always find it amazing how
something as tiny as a toe can demand and command so much attention!

my first thought, when you were talking about dunes, was ohhhhh . . . being
buried in nice warm sand up to my chin would seem like heaven.LOL  but
walking on deep sand would be hell.

you do have a busy calender, but it does sound like good medicine for you,
sweetie.  enjoy.

I envy you the tenting Nann.  Pat decided long ago it was no longer fun for
him but even at the RA I continued for a long time camping once or twice a
year with the kids at first and then my pathfinders (older girl guides).
That is truly over now but I do miss it. In BC we have some incredible
tenting spots that are reasonable.  Might just have to try one more camp at
one point with Kyle (5 year old nephew) but definitely not this year.  We
are having a "sleepover" in grama's condo next week - in a comfortable bed!
He is sleeping on the floor in his inflatable airmattress sleeping bag.  no
bugs, no smoke!  We might make smores in the microwave though!

Nann,

sorry to hear the flaring going on you have been dealing with. I hope it
soon goes away and gives  you a break.

the camping and all else that you do sounds awesome and I can't imagine how
you do it. But am proud of you for doing it. I can see how strong you are
with it all.

have a safe trip there and back. take care.

let us know how the rd appt goes and what he is going to do for you when you
can.
