Wondered if anyone has had this happen from taking Plaquenil (this what
a phamacy told me). I am changing color and it is mostly noticable on my
face. I have large area's of gray skin. Still have some pink at the hair
line, nose, and a small area at the eyebrow..It is ugly and wonder if it
will ever go away? I have an appointment with the RA doc the 18th. I
feel like hiding!
Donna G. - 14 Jul 2007 00:35 GMT
Gee, Connie, I have never heard of this before!  Sure sounds unpleasant.

I was on plaquinil for years and never had any problems with it!

Sure hope things turn around for you, if it is the plaquinil.

I've been taking Plaquenil for a long time and never had a reaction like
this.  After reading your post, I went to MedLine and looked up the side
affects listed and it does say possible a skin rash, but nothing like
you describe.

Do you take any mineral supplements? The only thing I know that causes
skin greying such as you describe is colloidal silver. (Mind you I am
not a doctor, just guessing here). I think of myself as one of the
poster children for plaquenil. I have taken it off and on since 1972
(now off).

I am sorry to hear of your problems. I can imagine how frustrated you
must be!

No gold for me! I take Neutron, Imuran, Methotexate, garlic, fish oil,
prenatal vitamin, calcium and folic acid (oh, yes vitaminC). I finally
called a tri-care pharmacist and she said Plaquinil can get into the
pigmentation cells. So I suppose this is unusual. I guess I need to see
if the RA doc has had any other patients that has had this happen..I
suppose the only docs that has sen it will know if it will go
away..Thanks so much for everyones response..You are such a great group.
I have been a lurker for years..

Now are you the Connie that lived on the house boat? If you are, you
better tell us all about what has happened since we last heard from
you. If you are not, a brief bio will do. LOL

I loved your posts too if we have the right Connie.  I
remember when you sold the house, and bought and outfitted the boat.  It was
quite exciting.

Hi Gang,

This is NOT Connie & Robert who are on the canal boat house.

Entirely different Connie!

I went to see the PA and found out I was suppose to be taking the Imuran
once a day..I don't know who screwed up, but they and the bottle said to
take it 3X a day. That maybe the reason the Plaquinil was able to get in
the skin cells..I do believe my color is dimming a little..
Donna G. - 20 Jul 2007 21:45 GMT
Connie,

Do you mind if I ask what dose of imuran you are on?

I take imuran and take 100 mg twice a day, so it can be taken more than
once a day.  Actually, my RD said I could take it once a day, twice a
day, or three times a day, what ever worked out best for me.

Donna, the dose was 50mg 3X a day. I have dieted and lost at least
25lbs and I think that made a difference in the dose. Glad to know I
wasn't overdosed as much as I thought I had been.
JCArmijo@webtv.net - 21 Jul 2007 16:19 GMT
The doc said it can affect the lungs..so be careful..
Donna G. - 25 Jul 2007 06:46 GMT
Connie,

The Imuran actually  has much less chance of effecting the lungs than
mtx does.   When I got the interstital fibrosis from RA lung, my doctors
pulled me off of the mtx and put me on high dose steroids and the imuran
as imuran is one of the things that is supposed to help RA lung and its
related problems.

I have been on the imuran for years and never had a problem with it what
so ever.

Hope things turn around for you soon and what ever the skin issue is
goes away!

Best wishes!!!

Hi, there,
I did an internet search and found that gold can also  cause the skin
to turn gray. You would not also happen to be on gold, would you?
