Harvey R. Stone - 09 Jul 2007 20:06 GMT Hi All ,,,, Been gone for a couple of days. Ya know about all the rain Texas as been getting??? Wellll, my house was struck for the third time. I really think I am being shown something.... I got some of the stuff running again and no fire this time.... I do not think I would of lived over another 3 months in a hotel. Melted a couple of phones and we have a plug or two that do not work. So it goes. Harv
Squirrely - 09 Jul 2007 23:20 GMT Oh Harv, you are talking lightening right. I am so sorry this happened to you and again.
I wish there was something I could do besides pray but alas with our finances that is all I can do for now.
Signature Love and Hugs to all Jo the squirrely one

That really scares me. In one of my parents old houses they had lightening rods on the corners. I always worried that the rods would attract the lightening. In the house I'm in now, the television got hit and ruined a few years ago, but no fire and no real damage other than the plug and some wiring. I'm so happy you escaped serious harm.

Donna G. - 10 Jul 2007 00:39 GMT Yikes, Harv! How scary and frustrating at the same time!!!
Glad you are ok, though. The "stuff" can be replaced, although I know it can be expensive. I went through that one time and lost a tv, answering machine, phone, and a printer. Thankfully, insurance covered most of it. Was the only claim I have ever filed with my homeowners insurance.
In any case, hope this will be the last time for you to have to go through this all.
This weather sure has been crazy all over the country.
Hugs,

> This weather sure has been crazy all over the country. > Hugs, > Donna Believe me when I say there will be no insurance claim. The second strike cost Farmers,,,, $86,000. The first one was also tied up with someone stealing from my garage. 5 or 6 different lawn care items and a tv and vcr that got a big power surge,,, hhhm and a microwave I think. Anyway,,, I just got my insurance payment down in the normal zone. Ya know what was bad (besides the blast of that strike) it was standing ankle deep in water in the rain and resetting those breakers in the ele. box outside that were thrown. That scared me pretty bad but living with my wife with no A. C. running is not a pretty sight and that scared me worse. LOLOL I want you to know there are some pretty good people in this world. The telephone man was at my house helping me check every phone and getting my computer going(not his job) and when I asked him where the paper was he wanted me to sign,,,, he said,,, naaah,, I will call it all outside work,,, no charge. I did not know what to say other than thank you and shook his hand. I also lost two new dish-625 units,,,,, replaced and repaired,,, no charge. That was a couple hours work,,,, no charge. I need to pay for some stuff just to balance the scales a little bit. I am really tired. Sleep will come quickly.

Kelly - 10 Jul 2007 06:06 GMT Sleep well Harv. Nice to know that no one was hurt and the house was safe. Also nice to know there are still good people in the world.

I ordered a kit from the internet that cost $ 3 or 4 hundred dollars and I put it up myself while we were living in the hotel just to have something to do to get out of there besides,,, the wife was hogging the tv,, you know how women their soaps are..... LOL Harv
ps it never even touched them.

That is probably because the wiring in your home is grounded better than your lightning rods. I have 2 CB radio antennas on my home and both masts are grounded through copper cables (1/2" dia.) to 1/2" rigid copper tubing 10' into the ground. A few years ago one of the antennas was struck by lightning which actually melted the aluminum of the antenna but my house wasn't damaged at all.
My lightning protection cost me less than $100 by buying everything at the local hardware store.

Harvey R. Stone - 10 Jul 2007 17:04 GMT >> ps it never even touched them. > [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > > -- I think you are correct. The house box is grounded with copper to the ground and my stuff is grounded with iron or should I say is not grounded very well.... I saw some copper rods down at Home depo for grounding. I am going to have to break loose with the money to get a couple. Thanks you solved my puzzzle and answered the whys.... Harv

Slide the rod into the hose so the end of the rod is at the end of the hose.
You may want to dig a little starter hole, then hold the hose against the ground have someone turn the water on high. This will cause the host to suck itself and the rod into the ground. When there is about 6" of rod still above the surface of the ground and with the water still running pull the hose back out leaving the rod in the ground.
