Natural diuretic?

I'm having a terrible time with swollen feet and ankles.  It gets to where
my feet start feeling numb and my shoes don't fit.... ugh.  I'm always like
this in the summer any way, but this year it's ridiculous.  I asked my PT
and she said summer swelling is relatively common since your body will tend
to preserve moisture in summer's heat even if you are inside with the a/c
running.  I know about getting 'your toes above your nose' but that's a
tough position when I have so much to do- and my GERD doesn't much like it
either.  I have tried sleeping with my legs elevated, but I tend to roll off
the pillows while asleep.  I'm already avoiding salt and sodium and drinking
plenty of water.  I feel waterlogged.

Is there any food, herb, vitamin, etc. that will help drain off this
retained water- that works as a diuretic?  TIA

Hi Leslie,,,  My best advice is to do and take what your doctor tells you to
take.    I do not think you are taking your swollen ankles serious enough.
We are talking about your life here.......  Seee your doctor about the
problem.

Leslie,
You should talk to your dr. about this condition.  I take 120 mg of
Lasix daily to keep the swelling down that is caused by my kidney
condition.  This swelling can also be a symptom of congestive heart
failure, liver disease, or other things that should be handled by a
physician.

Okay, Harv, you scared the bejabbers outta me.  After reading your post, I
*forced*myself to spend over 5 hrs. with my legs elevated about 20 in.
higher than my body with the rest of me laying perfectly flat.  The swelling
is down immensely.  There is only a little bit left, but I cannot stand to
lay like that any longer.  Thanks for scaring some sense into me and making
me put my physical needs before anything else.  I needed that!  ;-)

And thank you to everyone else for the suggestions.  I'm going to raid my
kitchen and see what I have that all y'all mentioned for natural diuretics
and start using them.

Leslie, I've traded a little bit of elevation over a long time for lots of
elevation for 20 minutes or so.  I'll lie on the bed or the floor, depending,
with my butt up close to a wall and put my feet up on the wall.  20 minutes
or so with them up that high will do wonders for the circulation.  If I'm
tired enough I'll fall asleep and have them up there until my feet fall
asleep enough to wake me!  lol

When we returned from Germany on Wed., I could barely get my left sandal on,
my foot was so swollen from travel.  I fell asleep with my feet up the motel
room wall that evening and didn't wake until my leg muscles started cramping!
I could get my sandals on no problem in the morning, though.

Hi Leslie,     I am sorry if I scared you.   I did not mean to do that.   I
did want you to take this seriously.    I do not see where you are going to
have a doctor look at your condition.    Sometimes,,,,, over the counter,,,,
what your friend does or says or anything on the internet may not be good
enough.
You need to know what caused your ankles to swell and do something about
it.   I had it happen to me,,, both ankles,,, ... My family doctor and my RD
had a discussion over a anti-inflammatory I was taking and I ended up
getting a new RD and stopping the medicine.    The truth of it is that my
mother had just passed away and the stress of it all plus a very strong
anti-inflam. made my ankles swell.   Two weeks later,,  normal size ankles
and I got a good RD that I have had every since.  Sooo some real good came
from it all.   Good luck with it.

I'm right there with you.  More water helps, believe it or not.  Asparagus
and cranberry juice help get the water moving.  A little lemon juice in your
water helps.

Most of my problem is  my right leg.  That foot swells all the time.  It
ain't graceful but I watch TV lying down on the sofa, with my head propped
up on its arm and my foot on the back.

A recliner all the way back helps too.   With a pillow on the foot rest to
get the foot/feet a little higher.  I've got the GERD problems too so you
can end up looking like a pretzel.

I read or watch TV in the bedroom with a large pillow under my legs.  I
can't sleep that way at night, but I can nap that way.

If the swelling in my foot gets really persistent I'm wrap it in one of
those elastic sports wraps over night.  Not too tight.  Just enough to
remind it what size its supposed to be.

This is why I wear Birks.  You can adjust the width separately.  But I try
to do any shopping or anything like that early in the day while I can still
get my shoes on.

Walking, if you can manage it, even a little bit helps a lot too.  You need
a bit of muscle tone to keep thing circulating.

But I cannot take diuretics.  They are a ticket straight to hell for me.  I
will have the worst, most painful muscle cramps on earth.

Leslie and Jo,
I also soak my feet in the tub with only cold water a couple of times a day.
It helps.  also avoid dangling your legs - a no no anyhow.

I take my naps like that too Jo.  Pillows under legs from knee down.  Can't
sleep like that though at night but it does help during the day.

Leslie, my PT told me to lie on the couch on my back with my feet on the
arm.  You only need to have your feet just slightly higher than your heart.
I also propped my leg on a pillow when i went to bed.

Movement helps with the lymphatic return from the feet and ankles.
Contraction of the lower leg muscles pumps the lymph back up and as such
reduces swelling.

Also, without enough salt the kidneys have a hard time functioning. Ask
your doctor if having too little salt could be contributing to this
problem. Also, drinking too much water, alone or in combination with too
little salt, may end up contributing to your problem.

considering this can be caused by all sorts of other unpleasantness, it
really is a good idea to talk to your doctor.

Regards,

Ari

Sorry, no suggestions for a natural diuretic, but if you're not allergic to
medicines, I would seriously consider having your doctor prescribe you a
pharmecuetical diuretic.  Why?  Letting the swelling go too long can
increase your blood pressure, and the summer months are very hard on those
who have swelling.  When my BP was sky-rocketing some years ago and I ended
up in the progressive care unit of the hospital, and the doctor had
experimented with several different BP meds, he decided to give me a mild
dosage of a diuretic, and it was the magic button to bring my BP down to a
safe level.  I still take it, with no ill effects, and my BP has been at
safe levels ever since.  Nanny

A pharmaceutical diuretic messed up my electrolytes, and I was in the
hospital on IV for 4 days. We are treating my BP with other meds. I don't
have much problem with swollen feet. The doctor should be able to help
figure out what makes you feet so swollen.

That reminds me.  I should have added that to offset the loss of fluid as it
relates to the electrolytes, my doctor also prescribed me Potassium.   Nanny

Hi Leslie,
I'm also suffering with the foot swellers..even thought my cardio has me
on 80mgs. of Furosamide(diuretic), they still tingle and can't wear many of
my shoes. I was having high BP too, so with the diuretic and one other BP
pill, it's keeping it down...I just can't seem to take the time to put my
feet up in the air, or don't want too, but I know it's a good thing...take
care...Nel
