Can some of you that suffer with this tell me what you go thru with it?

I am getting concerned here. Mine is getting much much worse I guess. I
can't do anything at all now without it messing with it. If I stand up for
5-10 minutes to attempt to do the dishes, I almost pass out from the feeling
of swelling going up into my shoulder blades and neck and from the pain.

It took me awhile to figure out this was what it was coming from. I have DDD
in lower spine. I also have spurring in cervical.

Half the time if I do anything,  I get numbness in hands and fingers.

If I try to push with my hand on the fork to cut up something simple, like a
piece of pancake or waffle, etc I get numbness in my hands and fingers, than
a sharp pain that goes up my arm and into my chest. I  am sure I am becoming
quite the drama queen these days.

If I bend over I almost pass out.

So I was wondering if you also have these issues with yours? I was wondering
what you do to help with the DDD? What is the outlook for people with DDD?

I know we are not drs and that is not what I am after. I know what I have. I
just don't know what to do with it now that I have it. ;-)

I can't take any aspirin type products because of stomach bleeding so that
lets out a whole lot of help to get the inflammation down.

I guess I am asking just how do you deal with it. How does it affect your
life? How do you cope with it?

I am getting sick and tired of this. I really am.

I was told that i have this condition about 5 years ago. I had this
constant tingling in  hands which is worse at night. Regular doctor
sent me to a surgeon who wanted to cut on me. I declined as it was not
all tthat bad and basically was simply scared of surgery. Had talked
to a friend that's a retired doctor (not a surgeon) who told me to put
off any surgery for as long as possible. He told me to do a lot of
walking while carring a small weight 2 to 3 lbs. This seemed to help,
but lately the tingling has gotten worse --but now have other health
conditions such as high blood pressure so am not sure what the future
holds.
How long have you had the condition and did a doctor suggest surgery?
Squirrely - 28 Jun 2007 15:17 GMT
Dan,

I have been dealing with this for a long time now. I would have to look up
when they told me it started. It was back in 2002 I was told about the
lumbar ddd and in 2003 I was told about the cervical spurring.

no dr said anything yet about surgery but then we haven't been dealing with
it much since I was doing better till the last few months now.

I would try anything for me but the surgery. I have too many other issues
with health so I wouldn't be a good canadate for surgery and I heard too
many horror stories about it.

But I am not ruling it totally out if needed.

I am getting tired of seeming like a baby and having to have my hubby cut
everything up for me and not being able to do hardly anything at all anymore
because of the pain involved.

Dan,

I just noticed your post and believe it's the first in ASA from you.

I want to welcome you to the group, with the caveat that we're sorry you
have a condition that required your particitpation.

I hope you don't mind if we call you Dan #2 because we have a really
old-time Dan C (who doesn't post much lately).

Become acquainted with everyone, but BEWARE of females attempting to entice
you out of any chocolate you may have.

When you get settled and comfortable, you may want to tell a bit more about
yourself - what part of the country you're from, family, hobbies, etc. etc.
Just as much as you want to make public.

Oh Dan, don't believe Joe about the choc. It is not just women that want
your choc. ;-)

I won't bother you about choc, but will take a creme puff is you happen to
have one. ;-)

Yeah I forgot to say welcome to the group. I hope you will find lots of info
here.

I'm allways fearfull of women that want to take my chocolate...lol!
Sweets are a whole nother issue. But I was reading some good health
news about dark chocolates recently. I seem to go through cycles of
cravings, but have them under control as of now.... (knock on wood)
Best wishes to all.

By the way does anyone know if a thera cane would help with the pain of DDD
or is it just for things like muscles and trigger points or tender points.

Squirrely I have used a cane when mine was acting up.  It does help a
little.  And it explains your slower movement!

Hope you're feeling better,

Vickie B.

Thanks Vickie, I appreciate your responses to this. I have a lot to learn
about this one.

I found the above quite helpful Jo. Check out the related links on the side
including exercises etc.  Regarding the numbness in your hands and fingers
next time you are at your doctor's ask him if this is a form of neuroprathy
and whether gabapentin would help - gabapentin will deepen sleep as well
which might help in other ways (as Diane and Gloria are finding).  Another
form of chronic pain relief would be an antidepressent such as nortriptyline
(I know you do not want another expense but both of these are relatively
inexpensive if that helps and might fight some of the other fires as well.)
In the meantime I would seriously try the ice, heat and exercise -
especially the walking every 30 minutes minimum for a short bit.  Do not
simply sit or lie down all day - I can guarantee with any back problem or
spine problem this is the worst you can do.

This is tough to hear I know and you are probably wondering if I am nuts or
what.  Unfortunately that movement means the world to anything at all with a
back - but you must start out slowly and often.  If you have access to a
pool that would help as well Jo.

The one thing each site I visited stresses is not to smoke but as you have
breathing problems I imagine that one is beat.  I would also quote the lose
the "obesity" thing but as both of us are on prednisone and struggling with
exercise AND I don't know you and for all I know you are one of the skinny
people that I wish I was now (I used to be 115 pounds - and struggled to get
over that.  What a dream) I won't mention it.  I know in my heart I need to
lose weight but easier said than done with all these damn meds and no
energy, feet so swollen that shoes don't fit and especially sandals (tried
those today - the straps don't even meet - need to have this darn rituxan
work fast!!!).

So hope these help Jo.  Hopefully Jim is still getting a bit of work and
things are going better for the two of you.  I think often of both of you
and include you in my thoughts.  Better times are coming - they have to
eventually if we can all just hang on.  Sending you a braided piece of
quilting material.

thanks Kelly, I will look into this site when I can. I need to go back to my
back exercises and see if that will help. I forgot about them because I had
so many good years that I stopped doing them. Thanks for reminding me about
them.

I will try some of this and see what happens.

I do smoke by the way, I know, bad bad bad.

I am a hyper person so don't sit much or lay much. If I lay for any length
of time I stiffen up too much.

I can't get out to walk because of the heat. I am a hyper person and do alot
of walking around in the house, kind of pacing around alot. ;-)

I did use to do walking outside the house and almost ended up in a wheel
chair. I was doing it for the ddd and the hip stuff. The boys were the ones
to pick up that I was pushing it too much but I wanted to listen to what the
dr said and the chiro. ONce I stopped walking around outside I got so much
better that I didn't even need my cane for along time. NOw I use my cane
more so to keep me upright more so than for the hip area or back area.

I am overweight. I weigh 220 lbs give or take a few. I keep going down and
then up and down and up. I used to weigh more than that.

Jim has been getting a few more temp jobs. I sure hope they don't kick him
off unemployment because of it. He worked Mon, Thurs and Fri of the week
before last and all last week. He went out on Tues and now today again. It
helps a bit but it is not real good pay. But every little bit helps.

I hope you are doing better and rested up from the move.

Hey Jo!
Finger tingling and numbness is usually caused by either a pinched ulnar
nerve or carpal tunnel. If it is the little and ring finger it is the ulnar,
thumb and first finger is carpal. The ulnar can shoot pain up into the neck.
Mine does it all the time. They found my pinch in my elbow and I finally had
surgery to move the nerve. Too late though as the damage was already done. I
had a bad bought of carpal a couple of months ago and got a cortisone
injection which helped quite a bit. I always thought the problem was in my
neck with the ulnar problem. I was wrong and should not have waited too long
to be seen about it. Now the nerve is damaged and the pain will not go away.
Hope you find your answer.

(((((squirrelly)))))

I've had DDD for 27 years but I've never associated finger tingling
with it.  Mine runs down my legs.  In general I have no single
treatment ideas.  But with each episode I work through it.

Love and prayers,

Vickie B.

Thanks Gary,

I will pay more attention to what fingers it is affecting and when. Maybe
that might be a big clue to the puzzle.
