Hair loss?

OK, I know we have had this discussion here before, but I am just
wondering.

I am literally losing hair by the handfulls.  When I lather my hair when
washing, I literally bring my hands down with just tons of hair.   My
pcp thinks it is just a normal hormone problem for someone my age.
Hmmmm, I'm not all convinced that is the problem as it started really
quite out of the blue about a month or so ago.

I'm wondering if any of you have this same problem and if you think the
grape seed capsules will help this type of thing?

Am also being sent to an endocrinologist to check on some thyroid issues
that have come up.   Thyroid quite enlarged on one side, lots of cysts
and nodules, etc. so will ask about this then as well.

Any input?

grape seed might help, biotin might also help. It could definitely be
associated with thyroid problems, depending on just what is going on.  Be
sure to mention to the endocrinologist, though I suspect he will ask you
about hair loss.  I don't know if the supplements will help much if it's
thyroid related.

Even after I had my thyroid mostly in order, I found thinning hair to be
a problem. I've been taking biotin for probably 6 or 8 months at this
point, and I'm much happier with my hair. It's gone back to being thick
and bushy (I'd thought I'd lost that when I went gray). And, it's been a
few months since my last haircut, and the ends don't look all wispy and
uneven the way they had for probably the last 7 or 8 years.

well, donna, join my club. (and alice, please tell me how much biotin
you take).

donna, yours may be thyroid related since you're having problems in
that region as well. as for mine, it's gotten terrible in the last
year. same as you, washing my hair leaves hair all over my hands. and
my hair on top is very thin with visible scalp showing, which is why
i'm letting my hair go naturally curly instead of blowing it dry (it
masks the baldness somewhat.)

mine is so bad that i got a referral to duke u where the female hair
loss specialist practices. she took biopsies of my scalp where there
was no hair growing and where the hair is thin. (that was fun. . . ).
she took ten thousand tubes of blood. the result? plain old female
pattern baldness. supposedly inherited, though i'm the only female i
know of with balding in my family. treatment is rogaine, which doesn't
agree with my scalp.

i also found some products online that you can "paint" on the bald
parts of your scalp so it doesn't shine through. yuch! but when you're
desperate, you're desperate.

i hope yours is thyroid related and it all grows back when that
problem is taken care of.

I take 2 300 microgram tablets a day (except when I forget!). I'm not
sure how I arrived at this number; it's twice the RDA.

I tried the biotin instead of grape seed oil because it's cheaper.

I never had anything more than thinning hair (and a receding hairline),
and on top of actual hair loss, I had breakage problems (despite never
dying my hair and independent of whether I use the blow drier); both
problems seem to have decreased.

There is no rhyme or reason to how doses of quack cures are determined.

It could be thyroid, or meds, or just about anything, it is hard telling. I
would ask my dr next time you are in there.

Donna, it may be a combination of both Thyroid and Hormonal...I seem to have
cyclic problem with my hair loss...Where it is fine and then I have a period
where it comes out...so I assume...it is hormonal...except after my RYN
gastric bypass and sudden weight loss...About 3 to 4 months out, I lost
quite a bit of hair....
Does the Biotin help with normal aging hair thinning...
I might try it...

Donna,

I don't have an answer as to why.  I've been through periods where
mine did that too - then it would get better.  Do you taka a mult-
vitamin?  Also, I took grape seed extract and it seemed to help.
You've been through a lot lately so maybe your body is just reacting
right now.  Hope you are feeling better.

Debbie,

No, I'm not on a multivitamin at the present.   Actually they had me on
a multipvitamin the whole time ( 1 month)
I was in the hospital right after the stroke, but haven't been on it
since.  The only new medication they added to my regimen, also since the
stroke, is an aspirin a day.

PCP checked my scalp and said there were no rashes, or dermatoligic
types of things that he could see and that is when he just said it was
probably hormonal?

Would a multivitamin be helpful in this type of situation, along with
other supplements perhaps?

Willl definitely be asking the endocrinoligist about this when I see him
or her.

Thanks everyone for all of your responses, wow, didn't realize so many
of you were dealing with this type of thing!

Lots of times people don't talk about something 'cause it's just never come
up.

My hair is thinning somewhat by my temples but nothing alarming. OTOH my
face is getting quite fuzzy! The women in my family run to moustaches
anyway.

My thyroid level tested out fine. I take levothyroxine (generic for
Synthroid).

Hope you get some answers.

Nell,

Did you notice any problems with your hair before you started on the
thyroid meds?

Just curious.

My hair has definitely thinned considerable over the years, but at least
it wasn't falling out by the handfuls!  Thats the part that bothers me
and makes me wonder if something else might be causing it.

P.S.---I hear ya about the hair being plentiful on the lower chin and
the upper lip!  Ugggggh!  LOL

Bill,

Your reponse is totally inappropriate, not to mention rude and hurtful.

No one here has claimed that anything was a cure---we all know better
than that!  If all you can do is be insulting instead of supportive then
please keep it to yourself!!!

Donna, since I've been using
Grape Seed Extract, I lose very little hair when I wash it(the hair, not the
Grape Seed Extract!)
