Home from Hospital - Again!

I just spent five days in the hospital, getting home night before last
(Tuesday).  I had severe diarrhea for six days before going to the emergency
room and was admitted.  Never found out what caused it but know that my
kidneys, bladder, colon and stomach are in good shape.  Had ultrasound of
kidneys & bladder; had colonoscopy and endoscopy of upper GI. area.  Got
into Endoscopy area, was prepped and on the way to do the procedures and the
kidney doctor stopped everything, said my potassium was so low it was too
dangerous to continue.  I had done the prep for the colonoscopy (the jug of
stuff to drink) and I could just see doing that again and told the
gastrointerologist there was no way.  He said he would just keep me on a
clear liquid diet until the next day so I wouldn't have to go through the
prep again.  Needless to say by the time he finished the procedures, I was
so weak I could hardly move.  And the absolutely worst thing I had to do was
to take six hours of potassium intraveinously (sp).   I have never had
anything burn and hurt so bad in my life.  The nurse said not anything could
be done except slow the drip and make it last longer, which she did.  There
was supposed to be something in it to keep it from hurting so bad, but I
think they forgot to put it in what I got!  I moaned, groaned, cried and
prayed, but it still was very, very painful.  Occasionally it would stop
hurting for a few minutes and then the pain would surge back with a
vengeance. I'll never do that again, and I've had my last colonoscopy.
Whatever I have, I'll die with!  The worst part is that I still have
diarrhea since coming home.

I had a galium scan two weeks ago and had an appointment with my
pulmonologist on the 22nd (Tuesday) to get the results, but I was still in
the hospital, so don't know if I'll have to have a lung biopsy or not until
I can get another appointment.  I do know that I'm having more coughing and
more stuff coming up; just don't know what it means yet.

I go back to orthopedist next Tuesday with my ankle and I'm hoping then he
will release me and I can drive again.  I know my daughter-in-law will be as
happy as I will, since she has been my transportation for all appointments,
and has done all my shopping, etc, since I got sick last October.  And she
has to get out of school to haul me around.  The hospital made an
appointment for me with Dr. Cox, my former doctor's (who retired)  former
partner--also next Tuesday, so that means I have appointments for 7:00 am
and 10:00 am next Tuesday.  Glad school is out but Jayne is in charge of JAG
(jobs for Alabama graduates) and works year round, but it will be easier for
her to get away since she will not have any students every day.

Glanced over the NG posts and see that so many have so many problems it
makes me ashamed to complain, so I won't.  Am just so thankful to be at home
with my baby girl again.  She doesn't even know where she lives now, at my
house or my son's house.  He said last night that she has one family with
two homes, so I'll just think of it that way.

I am praying for everybody on the NG; God knows all about everybody and
their needs.

O My Gosh Gwen!!

I'm sorry you're going thru so much procedure wise. I'm sending you
healing wishes, especially for the ankle, and vibes that I intend for you to
be able to stay away from the horsespittal.

You know you need the return line as bad or badder than anyone else,
sweetheart! Take cuts in line if you need 'em!

Luv and Hugs from Rosie

Complain away - you have earned the right and hardly ever do Gwen.  Hoping
they can find a cause soon - this is the craps - oops no pun intended!
(Gotta keep our sense of humour somehow!  That kind of week for several of
us.)

Hopefully this is the end of this garbage.  Will burn one more of these ASA
candles.  I like the way of thinking about one family wiht 2 homes.  My
nephew says he gets 2 birthday parties - the Seattle one and the vancouver
one - because he has 2 houses.  His mom works in both places and so they
travel back and forth.  works for him.

So sorry that you have had to endure so much Gwen.

If there ever is a next time that you need to have potassium, tell them
to either add lidocaine to the IV to help with the burning, cause that
stuff burns to the point of making you think you are having a heart
attack or something!  Been down that road way more times than I like to
think about.  Or, if you just can't deal with the IV, tell them to give
it to you in powder/liquid form.  It tastes quite nasty, but I'd rather
do that than do the pain of the IV.   Can't handle the huge pills
either, so I always go for the powder mixed with lots of cold water.
They probably did the IV as it is faster and if you are really low, that
is what they like to do, but they can add the lidocaine to help ease the
burning, not to mention they can slow the IV down considerably.   That
stuff can eat your veins alive!

Hope things ease for you soon and make sure you keep as hydrated as
possible given that you are still having the diarrhea.

Prayers being sent!

Keep us posted on your lung stuff to!!!

Hang in there!!!

Gwen,

want a mess. boy you do have a right to whine or vent. you went thru alot
there for those days.

you are lucky that you didn't have heart attack or stroke out. I think that
is what happens when your potassium goes too low.  I bet you were having
major spasms and cramps with it being that low too.

What is a galium scan. I wasn't going to ask but then thought yeah but  you
don't learn if you don't ask so I am asking. I know it has to do with our
lungs but what do they do.

I bet you will be glad to drive again. It is such a hinderance having
someone drive you places. I know because I can't drive. I hope you will be
able to be released and drive.

Boy two appts. Doesn't that wear  you out having to do two in one day. It
does me.

Your issues are just as much concern to us as any others are too. So don't
be afraid to tell us what is going on. We need to know so we know how to
pray for you.

That is why we like updates on people. I like to pray (oh forget it, I can't
think how to spell the word) for those areas that are important. Fibro
Fog!!!! ;-)

You take care and keep us posted to what you hear from the lung dr and the
other drs too.

soon and be able to stay in your own home with your furbaby.  It's about
time all those bad things stopped happening to you.
