I go in at 9:15 and have been told to expect to be there all day.
Permission forms, assessments, etc. then pretreatment with solu-medrol,
infusion and possible stops and starts with benedryl.

So thanks everyone.  I really need that support behind me more than ever.
My mom is with me (Pat is away this week on a planned trip) and she is going
to do some downtown stuff while waiting for me.

But it is going to go great!  My turn - right?

Just got back and exhausted.  We couldn't get it all in me in time - had a
reaction of course and we slowed it down to get 2/3 of it in.  We are hoping
efficacy will still be there - some studies say it is good.

I had a respiratory reaction - 3 nurses and a doctor and they were going to
call the ambulance and I managed to croak out "NO" I was getting a bit
better.  Stopped the drip and ran just saline, benedryl, epidrine etc.
(thought it was heart too.)  Vision started to go blurry due to lack of
oxygen but snapped out quickly.  Then had to wait an hour and a half
(cryingpart of the time) while they consulted everyone under the sun
(cardiologists, oncologists, pharmacists) to see if they would even continue
or if treatment would stop completely forever.  Luckily we went on but the
clinic nurses stayed until 8:30 for me.

Off to bed - exhausted physically and mentally.  Felt all of you behind me -
kept that image just like I gave DeeTee - it worked.  Stayed calm through
most of it.

Anyhow out of the woods and the next one we are changing protocol

Just for once I want to be boring.

So Kelly, will they be willing to try it again?  Can they even tell
about efficacy after one treatment?  Man, i can't wait until stem cell
therapy is available.
glad you're ok-sounds too much like what megan went through with the
nerve block.  I am sure hoping that this might still work

The clinic was incredible Melinda - they are a research clinic and infusion
clinic associated with my rd who I trust immensely.  The care and followup
was second to none.  My infusion nurse was a trauma ER nurse and can do an
put in an iv like no one else.  She uses gravity(the dangle lady she calls
herself - you dangle your arm - no tourneque thingy.  No bruising no pain no
muss.

They will do the next treatment and I probably will have no reaction.  We
are going to change the protocol and I will take 45 mg of prednisone the
night before and then the 100 ml of solumedrol early in the morning before
the infusion.  Lots of benedryl and we will divide the infusion in two just
in case we can't get it in the same day - then we will do two days in a row.
If we can get the speed of delivery up (that was where the problem occured
this time) we can do it all in one day.

They can't tell efficacy after one treatment but have done some tests on 1/2
the amount that they do and have some figures on that efficacy so guess they
can guess a bit.

I am sore today - but the solumedrol is doing the RA good (of course.) My
chest, throat and glands are tender though - probably from the spasms of the
breathing problem.  It is easing a bit though with regular breathing and
relaxing exercises.  Hopefully now that the solumedrol is wearing off I can
sleep this afternoon and this evening.

I must admit I fell apart when I heard they might not continue yesterday and
we might have to abandon ship.  I would have continued and told them so.  I
did however say I needed the slower dose to gain some confidence.  Was
really glad it wasn't heart.  Nothing permanent and next time will be a
breeze.  Will take up to 3 months to know if it is working or not though.

Thanks for all the support!  Will make it through this again - thank
goodness I had Donna's experiences before me to prepare for this.  What
would we do without each other?

Kelly,

I am so glad you are feeling better. It is nice that here is a very
caring and understanding nursing staff.  Nurses are such a backbone to
these infusions.  I was lucky that I am one of those people who do not
have drug reactions, consequently I sailed through my Rituxan infusions.
It does work and I do feel much better.  That infusion nurse is worth
her weight in gold,  nice to walk away without sore arms and bruising.

Honey - I know EXACTLY what you mean. It would be so nice just once not to
react opposite to a medicine or not to have complications. Get some rest,
sweetie, and then come back and play with us. We love you.

I am so sorry you had such a trial this time, Kelly, but I am holding on to
the hope that you being able to continue the infusion means the rest of the
cycle will go through and it WILL work for you.

Thank goodness for the competence of your infusion center.  Such places make
life so much better for the rest of us!  I envy your "dangle lady".  I've set
a new personal record for needle sticks and IVs this month and I'm tired of
the whole routine.

Your next treatment WILL go fine, through the day they WILL get it all in and
it WILL work for you.  I'm determined!!!!!
