i just got a call from my bil. my father has stopped eating, stopped
drinking, is spitting his pills out, can't swallow them, can't get out of
bed without vomiting and collapsing. he is talking to people who are not
in the room; is incomprehensible when he does talk to people in the room.
hospice and his doctor say his body is shutting down. doc said it could be
days or weeks, depending upon how strong he is, but that he will definitely
not be here for the end of this summer. hospice is coming over right away
to make sure his pain meds are appropriate. gotta get out of my jammies,
shower and get over there now.

I will keep you and your dad in my prayers.
BTW, when they are talking to people that you do not see, it doesn't
mean that they aren't in the room.

Carole, good point. I forgot to mention to Kate that it is not unusual,
either, when one is close to death, to actually see and hear things that no
one else in the room can. It's as if they have one foot in the hereafter,
getting ready to "step over". They told us in Hospice training that if they
see or talk to someone "invisible", and their reaction is happy, that is
good and you can even ask who they see and are talking to. If their
reaction is fear, they should be comforted and reassured that there is
nothing to fear. Nanny

Hi Kate. I have recently completed training as a Hospice volunteer, and the
one thing they stressed is that the patient's comfort is FIRST and foremost
during the last days of his/her life. There are no restrictions on pain
meds nor food desires when one is under Hospice care. I know the most
important thing to you is that your Father suffer as little as possible as
his body continues to shut down. Blessings coming your way. Nanny

I hope for the best possible outcome for your Dad, Kate, and for
strength for you to deal with whatever lies ahead.
