Finally starting my Enbrel

Hi, just wanted to post a long-due update.  A few months ago I was
posting questions about Enbrel and sinusitis, mentioned that I was being
treated for a sinus infection and had a weird and unpleasant cough.
We discovered that the cough was coming from nodules or lesions in my
left lung.  I did a web search for MTX side effects and found that a rare side
effect was lesions in the lungs.  NOT good!  But when I gave the RD the lung CT
scan report, she immediately took me off the MTX.  I haven't had that cough
since then, and hopefully my lungs will clear up.  I'm doing twice-a-year CT
scans to keep an eye on them and make sure they aren't actually cancer.  (I
don't smoke, so I'm optimistic.)
I also worked with a really awesome ENT, ended up having endoscopic
sinus surgery to clean the infection out of my sinuses.  It went very well
except for being difficult to intubate.  The sore throat after surgery was
worse than the sinus pressure/pain.  My sinuses have been clean for a little
over a month now.
So I finally get to start my Enbrel RX.  I'm going to do my first shot
tonight.   I noticed the comments here in the last couple days about how
putting into your tummy doesn't hurt.  Do you think that's because you're
injecting it into the fat layer, as oppoosed to putting into muscle in your
thighs?  I'm not saying you guys are fat, just that's the way my body is, so I
was kind of wondering about that.  I do know that if something is injected into
fat, it will take the longest time to be absorbed into your body, so I was
thinking that I wouldn't do it into my tummy.  What do you guys think?
Also, I haven't been taking any RX-strength NSAIDs since the surgery.
I am getting by (barely) on Advil.  When I stopped the Relafen for surgery, I
discovered that it was working so well for me that it was also masking the
sinus pressure/pain I had - which is how I went so long without realizing I had
a sinus infection.  Based on that idea, I was thinking that  I should try to
get by while I start the Enbrel so that I can see if it's effective for me.  I
know when I was taking the MTX, I never felt any improvement, but the Relafen
made me feel just fine so it's possible I just didn't notice.  I think in order
to give the Enbrel a totally fair shake, I should just take it and nothing else
for a few weeks.  Wish me luck!

Hi Sharon,

I did my shot yesterday in the top of my leg and it wasn't bad.  It just
burned a tiny bit for a few seconds.  The shots in the stomach don't hurt at
all and I'm sure it's because it's going into the fat.

Good luck.

That's a me too,,,,  If you want to, you can ice the spot you are going to
take your shot in for 4-5 min and no more than 15min.  Before you take your
shot, hold the needle straight up and thump the middle of the cylinder to
make sure all the air is to the top and get all the air out.   May it help
you as fast as it helped me.

Yep, I remembered the icing tip from earlier conversations here, so
that's what I did.  Put an ice pack on my leg for a few minutes first.   It
helped, but then since I couldn't feel the needle, it was kind of like sticking
something rubber.  :-)  ewww.
Anyway, I successfully did my first shot yesterday.  I know I'm wierd,
but I'm so excited about it!  haha!  I didn't have any adverse reactions, so
I'm doing fine so far.  I noticed how it stung going in at first, and I looked
at the syringe and thought "man, that's alot of fluid".  But I settled into
slow, firm pressure on the plunger and injected it all nice and slow.
Over the last couple of weeks, not taking any NSAIDS other than over
the counter Advil, I've been really stiff and sore.  Like at least half of my
joints were all flared up at once.  This morning I woke up and my jaw was no
longer sore, my elbows just a little stiff but much better, and everything else
much better too.  I don't know if it's a high pressure system that came in
overnight to make me feel better, or I can credit the Enbrel.  Either way,
things are looking up.

Good point.  I'm 25-30 pounds overweight, and it show in the gut - right
where Mary injects me.  <g>

Another good point.  That was discussed within the past year after an
article appeared mentioning that a lot of people are NOT getting the total
dose injected in (butt) fat because it's "lost" before getting to to the
point where it's intended to work.

> What do you guys think?

Harv had a good idea about icing before injecting.

Another suggestion (from an RN) is to lightly but sharply "slap" the area
before injection.  I guess the slap takes one's mind off the needle and they
don't feel it.  <g>

Sharon,

wishing you luck with the enbrel. Good to hear about the sinuses. Will going
off the MTX help your lungs or is that lung damage done for life now. I
don't know that much about this stuff. So pardon the questions.

You are in my prayers and thoughts that the enbrel works wonders for you.

Hi, Thanks!  I hope that going off the MTX will allow my lungs to heal back up.
That's assuming that it really is lesions caused by the MTX and it's not just
scar tissue from some infection, or damage from arthrits, or cancer...  Since I
haven't had a coughing spasm in a few months, I'm very optimistic.  In 6 months
we're going to do another CT scan, basically to see if they've shrunk or
disappeared.

Best of luck with the Enbrel!  (and enjoy those clear sinuses!  what a relief
that must be.)

I don't know about hte injecting into fat, etc. question.   I've always
injected into my thighs because I have these two large growths on my chest
that impede access to my tummy  ;-)

My brother injects his insulin in his stomach, but I guess with something
like that the important thing is consistency so you know how your body will
respond.
