MTX symptoms?

nanny - 23 Apr 2007 06:22 GMT Hi, all you who have had experience with taking MTX. Are these symptoms predictable with that medication: feeling warm, then chilling, less energy, skin feels itchy or "creepy-crawly". My symptoms are much like the ones I got from Pred, except I'm not taking Pred right now. But, taking inventory, these symptoms come pretty close to my weekly dose of MTX. And, what does it mean that MTX is also used as a cancer drug, but in lower doses for RA people. Does it kill normal cells in the process of slowing down RA? Sorry to be so vague, but I'm still trying to sort this all out. Thanks for any feedback. Nanny
Squirrely - 23 Apr 2007 17:14 GMT Nanny,
I don't do MTX and have those same feelings. I don't know what they mean. I was feverish, chilly, and had the itching all over. Then it got really bad in the back area. I kept insisting there had to be rash and Jim kept checking me and no rash. I was thinking it was some kind of virus. I wasn't on pred at the time either. So don't know what caused it really. I feel for you sweetie and just wanted you to know that.
I hope you find out some answers on the MTX stuff.
You hang in there.

What's strange is that when I get the "itchies", it's only my arms - nothing else. Whatever ;-) Nanny

I usually just feel more tired than usual after I take a dose. I forgot to take my shot last night so did it this morning and I want to sleep all day. Also have been kind of chilly, but that may be from weaning off prednisone. I guess so should the sleepy but it is much worse today.
I also get a headache from the MTX but I can avoid or "cure" that with a glass of water. I know I need extra water when I take it but I often forget.
As for killing cells, I don't think it kills any but it does cut down on reproduction in some types of cells. At the high doses used for cancer it can help to prevent the growth of the blood vessels tumors create to nourish themselves. At the much lower doses used for arthritis it cuts down on inflammation and swelling.
I don't have a problem with nausea from MTX but I take shots. I have plenty of nausea from other things.
Overall itchy feeling, I'd be checking with my doctor.
But if it is just a dry skin feeling kind of thing, maybe it is from getting off prednisone. Doing without it can cause its own side effects for a while.
(I'm down to 2mg one day and 3mg the next on prednisone. Never been on it for so long before and never took so long to wean back off)

nanny - 24 Apr 2007 04:58 GMT Thanks, Jo. I'll soon be seeing my Rheumy who prescribed MTX for RA, so I will check out the "itchies" with him. The same think happens when I would get TP injections, with cortisone - itchies (only in arms, however) and everything else I described. Sounds like it could be allergy-related or something to do with steroids. Nanny

I've never noticed anything. Sharon
nanny - 24 Apr 2007 05:00 GMT Thanks for responding, Sharon. Fortunately, I'm on many meds and have never suffered any allergies from any med. Only these symptoms occur when I was on Pred, when I would get steroid shots (TP injections) and now MTX. Perhaps there's a connecting factor in those 3 things. Nanny

Well, that makes 3. We'll have to begin handing out numbers. Gloria 1 Gloria 2 Gloria 3 <VBG>
... Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the bitstream.
nanny - 27 Apr 2007 05:46 GMT LOL! Which number do you want to be? Then, if we take numbers, how do we keep from getting mixed up by the other members? I never thought the name Gloria would show up that much ;-) Nanny

I never thought the >> name Gloria would show up that much ;-) Nanny Gloria - 01 May 2007 06:43 GMT Well, I'm gonna claim # 1. I was the first Gloria to show up here. Been around here more than 10 years. I've been MIA a lot in the past 2-3 years, but I always come back home to my 'Family' on the net, ASA. I moved to Seattle and lived next door to a Gloria, then moved back to Alabama and guess what? Got a new next door neighbor here while I was gone and her name is Gloria.
