My mother just called me and told me that Jonathan (my cousin) has been
rushed back into emergency surgery for the graft that was done on his lower
right leg.  Apparently some part of the graft is not "taking" and the
doctors aren't sure if they'll have to completely redo the whole thing.
This surgery could take anywhere from 2 to 14 hours.  Please, continued
prayers for Jonathan to get through this set-back and on to continued
healing

Hello Mary Margaret,
I sure hope this isn't the case.  Did they use synsthertic or bone
from a bone bank?   Prayers of course for Jonathan

The graft was a muscle from his back and a vein from his left leg.  The
bones were put back together with multiple rods/plates/pins.

I still haven't heard anything.  I'll try my mom again tonight.

I spoke to my mom this afternoon.  Jonathan was taken to surgery because the
grafted blood vessel was clogged with blood clots and not getting blood to
the muscle, which was dying.  They performed another graft and put Jonathan
on blood thinners until the graft heals.  Unfortunately, the blood thinners
caused additional problems and Jonathan's vital signs were weakening.  He
was moved to ICU and given blood over the last 36 hours.  My mom said that
he was looking better yesterday evening and he was HUNGRY!  While he's not
out of the woods yet, he is doing better than a couple of days ago.  His jaw
and palate are healing just fine.

On another track, my niece, Ginny is a student at Virginia Tech.  She is
fine.  However, she knows quite a few engineering students.  She works in
one of the engineering school's offices.  Her routine takes her through the
building where the second shooting happened.  She related that she started
to enter the building when the police yelled at her to leave, which she did.
My sister (her mother) said she was quite shaken, but is fine.  Please, pray
for the families of the victims as well as the whole Virginia Tech
community.

Oh, boy.  Thank goodness your neice is ok, there's enough to deal witth in
getting Jonathon well.  That campus will be in major grief mode for months to
come.  I can't imagine dealing with this and it's upsetting to realize how we
are aacquiring more and more experts at dealing with such things in this
country.  how we wish there were no such need!

It sounds like they've pulled Jonathon through one of the critical stages in
healing.  He remains in my prayers and I am following the updates, even
though I don't respond to each of them.  Please keep us posted.

Thanks for the news on Jonathan.  Continue to send healing thoughts!  Thanks
goodness Ginny was okay - that would have been a tough one at this time for
any family but especially one going through tough time anyhow.

Will keep those families in my thoughts.  Cannot imagine what they are going
through.

I just got this from my mother about my cousin, Jonathan.

>snip
Hi all, Just a short note then I need to get down to MCV to keep Beth
company. The muscle graft died and is being removed today. The doctors will
apply a wound-vac to keep the wound clean and free of bacteria. A decision
need to be made today whether or not to amputate. Jonathan will receive more
input from various medical personnel this afternoon and evening. If he
elects for amputation, the surgery will be done tomorrow morning. His
recovery is expected to be complete and he will be up and going through
physical therapy almost immediately. The alternate would be months and
perhaps over a year of being in a wheelchair with the wound-vac on his leg
hoping that the skin would grow to cover the bone. There would be no muscle
to help lift his foot in the front. This would mean a lifetime of wearing a
brace to help him walk. During all of this he could still loose his leg to
complications. Pray for God to direct Jonathan to make this serious decision
that will affect him for the rest of his life. God's will be done. Pray for
Beth, Art, Paul and David as they go through this trying time. Thank you
>snip

Please continue thinking of and praying for Jonathan that he might have a
good conclusion to this awful time.

I know this will offend some people but I have to say it anyway - GOD IS
GOOD!!

I just received this update from my mother.  Thank you all!

>snip

Good news! When the surgeons removed the dead muscle from Jonathan's leg
this morning they found a miracle had taken place! Jonathan's body is trying
to heal itself by producing a "skin" of connective tissue over the shin
bone. The doctors told Beth, Art and later Jonathan that this almost never
ever happens. Jonathan is not out of the woods, this just buys him
additional time. Tomorrow the doctors will do another surgery to place a
wound-vac over the area that still has not developed this connective tissue.
Picture his long shin bone completely without covering. Now all but about 3
inches has a thin covering. All of this has developed in a week's time even
though the muscle died. A true miracle and a work of God! No other
explaination. The doctors almost danced a jig out of Jonathan's room this
evening. They were so amazed and pleased.

Please continue to pray and praise God for this miracle and for continued
healing. No amputation tomorrow!!! Your prayers are working!. Thank you.

Wow.  wow.  keeping up the prayers for the best outcome.  One just never
knows.

If they do have to amputate down the road, hopefully it will be below the
knee - I know that level is much easier to adjust to.  But the prayers for
continued unexpected healing to avoid amuputation are ongoing.......

Wow, when doctors do a jig that's definitely good news.

That's great.
