my cataracts, which they say resulted from years on prednisone, need
to come out. my vision, which has been terrible since childhood, is
now ridiculously so. anyhow, i made two appointments to have them out
in june. i'd do it sooner if i could fit it into my schedule.
unfortunately, i'll still need glasses because of astigmatism, but i
can't wait to see more clearly. anyone had cataract sugery?

Yes.  And had it done in my mid fifties due to prednisone use.

I was legally blind in my left eye all my life.  Now I have 20/20 in both
eyes.

No my vision isn't as perfect as that sounds as I do have difficulty
focusing and need reading glasses.  And I don't like driving at night.  But
I can drive without glasses, watch TV and use the computer without glasses.
(As well as the captions on the TV which is great since I'm deaf.)

Are you sure you will still need glasses?  Those new lenses in your eyes
will correct for a lot.

I havce Diane.  Had both eyes done 2 weeks apart.  No problems whatsoever.
Colors sure were brighter than previously.  One eye is set for close-up and
the other for far off.  It works!

My hubby lost an eye to cancer about 6 years ago, so he was terriified
to have cataract surgery... he doesn't have a "spare" eye if the
surgery went wrong.  He breezed thru the surgery and spent the 1.75
hr. drive home gleefully reading every road sign, billboard and
license plate to me... and that was with his pupil still dialated!
His vision has gotten better every day since his cataract surgery 2
weeks ago and his vision is now 20/15.  Go for it!

thanks for the encouragement. yes, i'll still need glasses, though not
as desperately as i do now. unfortunately my degree of astigmatism
isn't correctable with the lenses --yet. my doc is just starting to
use a new lens that will correct astigmatism, but i frankly don't want
to be one of his first patients.

not I (yet), but both my parents did.  No problems, greatly improved
eyesight, happy with the results.  It's so much easier of a surgery these
days than it was when we were growing up.  Thank goodness for medical
advances!

My Mom had it also. She could see much clearer after the surgery. She
was actually surprised as she didn't realize how cloudy her eyesight had
gotten until the cataracts were removed. She said it was like cleaning
the glass :-))

I have a litany of woes.  I bought a new computer system and installed
Vista and it's been 2 months of problems.  In trying transfer files from
the new computer to the old, some files got corrupted and both computer
landed in the workshop.

I've just had them back, and the DVD drive in the new computer on't
work, so it'll have to go back to the workshop.

I should have waited a while before I bought and installed the Vista.
:(  I would have saved myself some grief and the cost of forced repairs!

Now about the cataracts -- I've had the cataracts of both eyes done, a
month apart.  I opted to have reading vision and for glasses for
distance vision.  My left eye is stronger than my right eye, and I had
to go in to get my vision measured for the correct lenses -- I suspect
the more visits to the opthalmologist's, the more fees he collects.  I
don't mind that but I resented the explanation that they needed to get
as accurate a measurement as they can -- well how accurate were they
when they I ended up with the same power lens in both eyes?  Yep the
left eye is still stronger than the left when they should be about the
same strength.  The opthalmologist said that he didn't know what
happened for their machine worked out the value of the lens for me --
and I had to go in twice to get this result?

I suggest you check that you don't land with this "problem".

My eyesight has really improved but I cannot read for any great length
of time.  My eyes get blurred -- and since I love to read, I continue to
read until I can't make out the words any more.  I went to see the
opthalmologist to find out why I'm having this problem.  He couldn't
find anything wrong.  I asked to be referred to another specialist for a
second opinion.  The second opthalmologist couldn't find a problem
either.

So you might like to explore this problem with your opthalmologist
before you have your surgery.

It was really wonderful after the surgery -- to be able to see such
striking colours agains.  :)

Good luck with your surgery.

There are different measures of what you might consider strength in an eye.
Accuracy over distance?  The ability to focus well?  The ability to change
focus quickly?  Handling changes is light?  Field of vision?

You get back a lot when you remove the cataracts from your eyes and replace
them with lenses, but you do not get back the vision of a twenty year old.

I have had one eye fixed. I also have bad astigmatism. The surgeon made some
cuts in the cornea to reduce the astigmatism. My astigmatism correction from
glasses is now about half the pre-surgery amount. My eye was also slightly
far-sighted. The new lens in the eye has almost totally fixed that problem.
My left eye is now showing a cataract that is growing. Looking forward to
getting it fixed in about a year.
