Hello Everyone,
My mother's , 82, health has been a huge issue this past year. She has
chronic nausea. It was mild at first, for about three years actually,
but for the past two years it's been debilitating. She's been in and
out of BIDMC in Boston for Acute Diverticulitus, three times this past
year. (She also has acid refux.) She just had gallbladder surgery two
weeks ago, HAS NOT HELPED. She'll be having surgery for the
Diverticulitus some time late this month or early next month. I don't
hold out much hope that it will help either.
It's so weird that they can't help her with this nausea, they don't
think that it's life threating but I don't see how much longer she can
live like this. She's lost a lot of weight and she's losing her will
to live. They've also done every test in the book it seems; and have
come up with nothing. Everything is within normal parameters.
I'm okay except for feeling helpless.
I need to find a good wrist surgeon in Boston, right wrist bone on
bone. Does anyone have a referral? I was letting my stuff just
fester but it's hard to fetch and carry with the wrists so painful.
Thank you,
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth, so sorry to hear you and your mom have been having such rough
times llately. I assume your mom is seeing some *good* gastro-intestinal
experts, but if not , make sure she does. I can't help much beyond that,
but can tell you about my grandmother and her diverticulitis. She had it in
the 70s and 80s, when they foolishly believed a bland, low-fiber diet was the
way to go. After a number of hospitalizations, she had the surgery. She'd
make comments about not having much "storage space" after that, but she was
much, much better.
I'll send Duckie/Caroline an email to check in, I think she's too busy right
now to be lurking. She had loads and loads of work done on her hands and
wrists when they lived in Burlington. I don't know if her surgeon was there
or in Boston, but I'm sure you'd be willing to go a bit further for a good,
recommended wrist guy. Do get those worked on - feeling a bit better
yourself will help you deal more effectively with everything else that's
going on.

Nann tell Elizabeth that I used Lahey Clinic in Burlington and my surgeon was
Dr. Margles pronounced like Marbles but with a G. He operated on me 6 times
at least, maybe 7. I started with him right after he finished his residency
[sp] and when I left he was head of the department. Just checked and he is
still there [loads have been defecting for higher pay - like Delleripa].

Who was having that stomach problem -- was it DeeTee? Elizabeth's mothers
story sounds familiar to me. Maybe it was ummmm such a blank -- can see her
face. Gimpfest. Starts with an S. Maybe Sarah? Anyway she was having much the
same problem but I think hers turned out to be gall bladder.
Tell Elizabeth to call my acupuncturist who is in Watertown, MA His name is
Marty Feldman at the Japanese Acupuncture Center. 617-926-4076. Ask him if
he thinks he could help her symptoms move to the back burner. Not cure but
make her life better. I know he was working with a friend to eliminate her
nausea after this friends chemo. Frankly, if the mother has been tested to
death, time to try something which will not harm but might just help. Man I
really miss Marty. Found a lady her that was okay for about a year when she
stopped her private practice. So she sent me off to someone else who cost
double+ what I have paid anywhere else -- never took history -- had someone
massage me first which does not work well for me -- and then do things which
made me hurt for about two days running. Never happened with Marty or with
the lady I had first on this coast. Marty is very honest and he will tell
Elizabeth if he thinks he might help or not. Sometimes he tells people that
he can't help right over the phone., Sometimes he suggests say three sessions
and then he and the patient decide if the treatment helped or was no
difference.
