Dear Friends,
My podiatrist just diagnosed me with hammertoes. My right foot is so
painful that I can't wear shoes more than 1-2 hours at a time. I have
done all the right things. I've been in old lady tie shoes for the
last ten years with orthodics. I've never worn heels ever!
My pod has already mentioned surgery. But I really don't want to do
this. Any other ideas out there?
Thanks a bunch!

I had the surgery a little over a year ago Vickie. If the orthotics
aren't helping anymore then it might be the best recourse. I would
suggest that you see an Orthopedic Surgeon who has experience with
arthritic feet, assuming arthritis is contributing to the hammer toes. I
was always told the surgery should be a last resort, but it has made
walking pain free for me.

My grandmother had this type of surgery done last year and it was very
sucessful. She was up and walking with special shoes for 6 weeks. She said
it wasn't too bad just uncomfortable at times. I hope you can make an
informed decision about whether or not to do the surgery. It was a good
experience for her, but she did have lots of support and help afterwords.

I had surgery and wished I hadn't.
Toe now bends downward since the inserted splint pin got bent while it
was healing.
The surgery was done by a foot surgeon who has operated on US Navy
Seals!
I am heavy so that may have caused the pin to bend.
PS I haven't gone back to him since the operation - and don't plan to.

Warrren and others,
I understand that there are several possible surgeries. The one that
I am the most comfortable with is the lengthening of the tendon under
the toe. I had that done on my heel spur a few years back and it
worked. But my pod does a bump removal type surgery. And that I'm
definitely not comfortable with. I would want that done by an ortho.
Thanks! a whole bunch!

I had the "bump" (bone at joint) ground down which was under a very
painful corn. A single stitch refastened the corn to the top of the
"bump" area - bump was no longer there. A few days - maybe a week -
later, the corn fell o ff and the pain went away - never had another
problem (this was with a different doctor than the hammertoe).
The hammertoe was anesthetized with a series of local injections,
surgically opened from above (like a hot-dog roll) nerve removed, toe
was broken and reset and a support pin was used to re-align the toe
(no nerve, no pain).
Result was that the pin bent (from puttin weight on food with surgical
shoe - doc said was OK to do so), toe is no longer straight and the
area feels "sore" from time to time. Toe is completely oblivious to
pain but the adjoining ones now feel strained.
I would not have done this had I known the results beforehand!
