. . . and he's not even a blood relative! just about all the blood
relatives (on my mother's side) have autimmune diseases, but this poor
guy is my brother's adopted son. He was just diagnosed at age 40 after
YEARS of having doctors attribute his symptoms to a car accident.
finally he's got a great sounding RD. she did a test which must be new
since i was diagnosed--a CPP? CCP (not CRP). something like that that
indicates the degree of RA you have? (I may have this all wrong).
anyway, he has tons of joint destruction. i feel for him. i've invited
him here, but doubt he'll be joining us. he's going through the "i
have to be on toxic drugs for the rest of my life?????" stage. the doc
will tell him which one on friday. i'm so glad he's finally getting
the right kind of help.

thanks, jo. i think things are settling down a bit. (knock on wood).
my sister interviewed and hired a 24 hour aide yesterday, who will
start the day i leave (i'm going up there tomorrow and will stay a
week), so she won't be alone. it's going to cost her a HUGE chunk of
money and she won't be able to continue to do that forever, but at
least it will allow her to take her time as she figures out what to do
next.

Here is some news that may cheer up your sister: From "The
Anti-Inflammation Zone", pg 276: The MS patients in the study taking
high-dose fish oil and eating three to four fish meals per week,
decreased their consumption of red meat, and ate more fruits and
vegetables, had a decrease of 90% of their MS attacks after one year.
"After two years, these patients' level of disability decreased by 25
percent".

Sincerely,  BlackHawk

Diane,

Sorry to hear about your nephews' diagnosis, although am glad they
finally figured out what was going on with him.

We certainly understand the fear and denial that first comes with the
diagnosis, so hopefully after your nephew has worked through that a bit
he will decide to join us once in a while.

Safte travels to you while you visit your sister, and prayers to you and
your sister during this most stressful of times.

them FRIENDS......

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether supplementation with fish oil given
together with dietary advice and vitamin supplementation influenced
the clinical outcome in newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis (MS)
patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen consecutive, newly diagnosed
patients with multiple sclerosis were recruited to an open
intervention study. They were given dietary advice and supplemented
with 0.9 g/day of long-chain marine fatty acids and vitamins. The
patients were followed for 2 years with respect to dietary habits,
blood parameters and neurological assessment including exacerbation
rate. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in the mean annual
exacerbation rate and the mean Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)
as compared to pre-study values. The plasma total phospholipid n-3
fatty acids increased and n-6 fatty acids decreased significantly.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that fish oil supplementation given
together with vitamins and dietary advice can improve clinical outcome
in patients with newly diagnosed MS.
