I am off to see my rheumy tomorrow. I have to travel to do that so
reather than taking a day off work I am going during my spring break.
Right now I am having sinus issues and a sore throat with swollen
glands in my neck, so it is a good time to go since we will be
discussing my success with enbrel. It has been a success, there are no
two ways about it but the problem has been the repeated sinus
problems.

Rose,
I would be interested in what your doctor says, I too have repeated sinus
issues with enbrel, have had to go off it a couple times only to get it
again.
Good Luck,
Becky

The only good thing about having a serious bout of bronchitis was that the
football size anti-biotic cleaned up my sinuses after a week of taking it.

The Rd was  concerned about the sinus infections and the risk of
having the infection go to my replaced joints. He has written a
prescription for doxycycline (50 mgs) long term in an attempt to stave
of the infection. I do have an infection right now though, so will
start on 100 mgs. for about a week, then take the 50. That will be 1/2
a tab as they come in 100 mgs only.

He said there is no empirical evidence to support this treatment, but
in his experience he has seen it work and it makes sense. The doxy is
used to treat sinus infections because it is more permeable to the
sinus cavities than most abx.

I am interested in giving it a try. I am sick of the infections, and I
want my voice back.

There is a risk of yeast overgrowth though so I have to be careful.

Doxy is also used for RA, so it should supplement the enbrel mtx
combo.

Isn't it acidophilus and/or yogurt that is supposed to help prevent the yeast
overgrowth with antibiotics?  Melinda and johnie would know.  I keep
forgetting as I've always done so well on antibiotics (one thing my body
cooperates with!).  I like your doc's willingness to tackle this head on and
his info about which antibiotic is best.

Yes, both of those work, and you can even get probiotic pills.
He has always been good about attacking things head-on. I have gone to
the same rheumie since 1982, and he is always on top of things. I even
have emailed him when I am not doing well, and he has changed
prescriptions on the fly (like once he was in an airport in Toronto
when he received my email, and prescribed some changes.). I don't
abuse that privelege, but in an emergency it is good.

Before that I had RDs who were very conservative and the results were
very fast joint damage. Mind you a lot of that may have been a result
of my age, and the thinking of the time, but still...
