Alaska and Hawaii were territories before being adopted as states. As were
many of the other states following the first 13.

Hhhhhm yes,,,,, I would really love to know the whole story behind how
Hawaii got gobbbbllled up. That territory as you call it had its own
system of government with a royal family and with a history of its own.
Alaska on the other hand was only saved from the Russians with money and had
no system of government that I know of. So it goes.

My wife was born in TH.

I don't know. But once upon a time my employer qualified to bid on
government contracts based on the percentage of minority employees. Two of
us qualified as minority based on having "Spanish surnames". The
electrician was adopted by a Mexican family getting his surname, and mine at
the time was likely Portuguese from Spanish Armada days.
