need to whine a little

a few things going on. the thing i am MOST concerned about right now
is a painful gum infection. i had a tooth prepared for a crown a week
ago and a temporary crown put on. they told me the gum would be a
little sore for a few days. i finally went back today (the earliest i
could) and the gum is infected. was given penicillin, but it scares me
a bit because i also got remicade last week (i really shouldn't have
had that crown prep in the same week, but wasn't thinking), plus had,
and am still fighting, a cold, so my poor immune system is totally
shot. if the gum is no better in a couple of days, i'll call my RD and
make sure i shouldn't be doing something different. if anyone's
grappled with oral infections while on immunosuppressants and lived to
tell the tale, i'd like to hear about it.

so then there's the cold, but i believe that's wrapping up. and then
there was the endoscopy yesterday, and i'm waiting for the biopsies to
come back.

finally, my brother-in-law died last night, a peaceful passing. i
won't be going to NJ for about a week but then will stay with my
sister for a week. she's coping well, as far as i can tell from this
distance. has lots of people around her.

thanks for the chance to vent,

diane

My sincere sympathy on the loss of your BIL.  Your sister will need you
more next week when things quiet down and she is alone.  I certainly
hope you will feel better by then.

(((((Diane)))))  you well deserve a whine.  My prayers for your sister as she
deals with the grief and all the adjustments this will mean in her life.  I
hope you are much better by the time you go to NJ - I know you want to be
able to help as much as possible.

My last oral infection, I was on mtx & arava so it was easy enough to stop
them, unlike remicade.  That was the abcess from hell at the top of an
existing and intact root canal and I ended up being on abx about 20 days
total before they did gum surgery to clean it all out.  One interesting note
though is that my medical doctors deferred to the dentists in what
antibiotics to have me on, figuring they know more about what bugs tend to be
in such infections.  YMMV.

Have my fingers crossed that your biopsy/endo results sshow something they
can do to help you with your GI troubles.

yowks, nann, not encouraging info on the oral infection! i seem to
remember when you were going through that. ugh. i did beg for a Z-
pack, since i tolerate zithromax well, but the dentist said this type
of infection requires penicillin type drugs, so i hope it will do the
trick. you made me realize i should probably check with my RD about
stopping arava while this is going on.

thanks to you and ann for the good wishes,

diane
Kelly - 14 Mar 2007 15:00 GMT
I would defininitely talk to him about stopping the arava - especially if
the other med causes diarhea or can hurt the liver.  Tough week Diane and I
am thinking of you and your sister.  Lie low and don't worry about the
remicade other than to notify your rd.  There is nothing you can do about it
right now with the exception he might ask you to use the antibiotic for
longer (remember that the tnf receptors can cause infections to become more
deep seated or to repeat if they are not completely gone.)  I hear you with
the dental work - the first time they gave me a temporary crown they flared
up my jaw so badly I lived on demerol and gravol and large doses of
prednisone for a week until they could get my jaw to lose enough
inflammation to put in a permanent one.  Why can't anything be easy with
this disease.

Thinking of you this week.  Hopefully the tests will be a breeze and you
will get some answers.  Glad your sister has someone with her and the two of
you can be together when she needs you most.  Will be hoping that her living
situation gets straightened out into a wonderful solution.

Take care and gentle gentle hugs,
Kelly in BC

My first oral infection was during a period where the RD had me on a potent
cocktail of meds, and since then I get the same infection in the same spot
about 5 times each year.

Since I'm allergic to so many antibiotics the docs always prescribe Bactrim
as I tolerate sulpha drugs well, and it always clears it up no problem.
Usually it the area will swell until the surface gum area is thin-skinned
and I press on it and drain the infection, then rinse with an oral
antiseptic.  That seems to relieve the pressure and help the healing along
with the antibiotic.  Eating soft/pureed foods during the 10 days on
antibiotics helps a lot as well so that nothing irritates the area.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ diane}}}}}}}}}}}}},
you take care of your self and as soon as you are running at 100% I am
going to come up there and give you a kick( albeit a loving one ), a
kick nonetheless for getting dental and remicade in the same breath.
Sounds like something I would do. Feel better and go be with your
sister. My condolences.

I've never been on immunosuppressant, but I did have extensive oral
reconstruction surgery in 1958 when my head & face was smashed. The oral
surgeon told me to brush my teeth and gums with less than 3% peroxide to
prevent infections. I did and still do.

Diane,

Sorry to hear about your BIL but he is no longer suffering.  I hope
you will be able to help your sister get settled while you are with
her.

Hi Diane, Sorry to hear about the passing of your brother-in-law.

I hope that something I came across on the Peoples Pharmacy may cheer
you up a little. In an interview with Walter Willette, M.D., a
world-renouned nutritionist, Chairman of the Dept. of Nutrition,
Harvard School of Public Health, was discussing vitamin D. He said
"The large majority of Americans are VERY short of vitamin D. Known
conditions which are impacted by vitamin D deficiency are cancer,
asthma, and MS; and it is strongly suspected to impact many others."

Perhaps your sister is one of those who are deficient in vitamin D. I
take 2,500 iu/day, just in case. Her doctor might be interested in
"jump-starting" her on a higher dose initially. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,  BlackHawk

thanks, blackhawk. i'll discuss with my sis, but her MS is so advanced
that i doubt anything will make much of an impact.

i still have this darn cold, but the gum is definitely improving!

Sorry to hear there is so little hope. However, even a small
improvement would be welcomed, wouldn't it?

I'd bet that MS, like so many things, is multi-faceted. MS is not a
main focus of mine, but I will keep my eyes and ears open for things
that might help, if you would like..

Sounds like you could use some vitamin D yourself. It's really GREAT
news that the gum infection is healing, especially considering that
your immune system has been recently compromised.

Any news on the celiac biopsy? We're all waiting with bated breath!

Sincerely,  BlackHawk
