Becky - 28 Feb 2007 02:26 GMT I would like to know how many people taking enbrel or even mtx, suffer from chronic sinus issues. I just got off the enbrel for 2 weeks, although my doc said he didn't think it mattered, for a sinus problem went on vacation did okay, here it is 3 weeks later and after 3 shots have all the sinus and other stuff again, pain in ears, swollen glands, sinus headaches so once again on zithromax and said to stop the enbrel for one week but continue the mtx he had me lowering it to 6 pills rather than the 8 I was taking since it was making me feel so bad, and said that most people on enbrel take a lower amount of mtx. I don't know if I think much of the doc anymore, I called him today to say that I feel the shooting pains again in my wrists and feet since lowering the mtx, after only 2 weeks, he says impossible haven't been off it at a lower dose to do anything and I must have just got another virus and take it easy for a couple days and enjoy my trip next week. Good grief for this I pay, I could have done the same myself. I have heard of an arthritis clinic in Seattle Washington by Northgate area anyone go there? I am tired of taking stuff that makes you have more side effects, I am about ready to say bag it all and take my chances but I know that it can do other stuff but I really don't think it is worth being sick all the time. Thanks for letting me whine Becky

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. I haven't taken enbrel, etc. but I have heard that they can lower the immune system. I hope you can find something that will not have so many side effects for you.

Judy Bay - 01 Mar 2007 02:14 GMT I'm on Cellcept and 4mg Pred/day, plus some blood pressure meds. My dx is Limited Scleroderma and Polymyositis. I suspected fibromyalgia for years, but it might have been a prelude to this.

I have always had this problem but more so since on all this stuff, the antibiodic helps but it is usually only for 5 day course it stays in your system for 10 I took it 2 times last time and here it is 4 weeks later and have it again, Not sure what I am going to do, but know that backing off the mtx I can tell that my arthritis is flaring or feel it more now , I was on 8 pills a week now 6. Thanks Becky

Please do not cut back on your prescription without your RD telling you to. The doc needs to know what your problem is and that you expect help. Going back to the full prescripted amount will not always kick in for you and then it will not stop what is taking place at all...... Happened to me... Several months of real pain before Arava kicked in to take its place. So it goes. Harv
Becky - 01 Mar 2007 04:09 GMT HI Harv, My doc is the one who told me to back off some. When I was up to the 8 pills after about 3 months I started noticing that I got really bad heart palpitations after about an hour from taking it so he told me to do 7 the next week and then 6 and said to go to 5 and stay there, not sure why but said that most people don't need as much mtx when they are on enbrel. I am finding that the mtx did more for me than the enbrel. He also told me I could stop the palquneil, since I had told him since My husband had died I keep forgetting to take it, so I don't take that either, and not no enbrel till the sinus things is done, I can really tell that I do need these drugs or something, I was thinking maybe they were wrong since I didn't really have pain but not I feel it all over again really bad in my feet, where it started out and constant jabs in my wrist. I am going to give the office a call tomorrow and talk to them about this. Thanks for the concern Becky

Never going near them again. I'm the one who recognized the pattern both times and the allergist I was seeing the second time told me it is a known, albeit rare, side effect of those sprays.

Judy Bay - 02 Mar 2007 00:38 GMT I don't know that the mtx caused the sinus stuff. I was just answering the OP that I'm on mtx and also have the sinus thing. It could well be allergies. I don't think it's an infection.

(I had been on Enbrel for over 4 years at that time.). I liked him a lot. He's a very good RD. I had a sinus infection when I moved there. I went to a walk-in clinic and got an antibiotic for 10 days, even though I told the doc that I thought I needed to take it for longer than that. He just looked at me like I was a junkie or something. A few weeks later, at one of my regularly scheduled visits with Dr. Nieman, I had a sinus infection....again. He told me that he thought it was the same infection not a new one and that most doctors undertreated sinus infections. He put me on an antibiotic for 30 days. I didn't have another sinus infection for over three years!

Ironically, I'd finally learned what my body needed to avoid the frequent ones I had in early adulthood before going on enbrel and, happily, they haven't returned though I've had some strange ailments on this. I do know someone who couldn't take enbrel because it gave him horrible headaches and sinus infections could easily follow from such.
another thought, have you ever had your immunoglobulins checked? as in IGG,IGA, IGE? It's another of those endless labs they can run on us. I just recently had them run on me, I think for the first time. Found out mine are about half of normal, which tends to leave one more vulnerable to infections, especially sinopulmonary infections. That may well be part of why I got so many infections in the past, before I developed tricks for avoiding them. They aren't doing anything about mine for now as I'm not having many infections these days, but they can give you infusions for it if you're having lots of infections. It might be worth bringing up with your doc.
Hang in there, it WILL get better one day. You've had a year that none of us would want.

Becky - 01 Mar 2007 16:50 GMT Thanks Nann, I go see the general doc tomorrow and will ask him about those tests, my RA doc has me go to him for the sinus stuff he only treats the RA he says even if it is a side effect maybe of the enbrel, kinda different, but have to do what he says. Thanks for the kind response, Becky

I am hoping that after being on the meds for 9 days I will be okay to leave for phoenix on the 10th of March with my sons it is trip we all need very badly. Well thanks for all the support, Becky
